AMD Gets Split New Radeon Technologies Group Formed
AMD Gets Split new Radeon Technologies Group Formed Under Leadership of Raja Koduri. The news came two days back that AMD has split the parent organization to create a new company under the leadership of Raja Koduri (senior Vice president, Chief Architect).
He will report to the CEO and president Dr. Lisa Su, who will continue to head both AMD and AMD Radeon technologies.
AMD Radeon Technologies will have the AMD APU , discrete Graphics card, custom GPU and GPU compute products.
Raja Koduri is of Indian origin and brings 20 years of experience in the field of visual computing and content creation to GPU architecture.
Before Joining AMD Raja Koduri was working with Apple computers in the graphics division.
Raja has done master of Technology in electronic and communication from IIT Kharagpur, India.
With the division of the AMD CPU processor and Graphics division AMD is planning to get the enhanced focus in both the divisions to increase the organization value for shareholders.
“With the creation of the Radeon Technologies Group we are putting in place a more agile, vertically-integrated graphics organisation focused on solidifying our position as the graphics industry leader, recapturing profitable share across traditional graphics markets, and staking leadership positions in new markets such as virtual and augmented reality,” Su said in a statement.
AMD got merged with the ATI technologies in 2006, the entire Graphics divison was actually acquired by AMD almost 20 years back which now will become an independent identitiy.
Raja Koduri has been instrumental in the development of key AMD technologies and contributed to the development of recent graphics cards, the AMD R9 Fury X and Fury which uses the advanced HBM ( high bandwidth memory).
Raja Koduri also has been focusing on the next generation of VR technologies which AMD calls the liquid VR.
The VR division will also be now part of the newly formed company the Radeon technologies. AMD has been losing market share to Nvidia for long and the patient needed this medicine to bring the focus back. Nvidia had a market share of about 70% of discrete GPU market which in last some months is raring to touch about 80%.
Nvidia GTX 960 and GTX 970 and at the high end the GTX 980 and 980 Ti have been best sellers. AMD is the only other company in the world that makes discrete graphic cards for the PC. It would not be good to have Nvidia monopoly in the market.
With the new company being formed, likely a lot internal resources will also get shifted which can bring a fresh breeze of life to AMD GPU division and we can expect some great products down the line.
