Display & Design – The new Samsung S8 and S8 Plus takes the concept of minimalism and bezel less display a step further to the future of phones. The Samsung Smartphones boasts of a infinity display with an unusual 18.5:9 display ratio and an incredible (2960*1440) pixel display.
The Quad HD curved display merges seamlessly into the body and and the device looks incredibly beautiful with almost all of the front occupied by the display.
The Samsung S8 comes with 5.8 inch display while the S8 Plus has a 6.2 inch display, protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Samsung S8 and S8 Plus comes with several new improvements and Samsung is going all guns blazing to take back the lost glory of Samsung Note 7.
The immersive display and beautiful design is the key highlight of the Samsung S8 and S8 Plus and probably the most alluring thing to make people buy the new smartphone. It is super futuristic.
There is no home button now and the fingerprint scanner is shifted at the back of the phone near the camera. The front side now has capacitive on screen buttons.
The middle home button is a pressure sensitive area something like the iPhone 7 Plus but it is not a physical button the sensor is placed behind the display and the on screen key acts like a home button.
Performance – The new Samsung S8 and S8 Plus comes with a Faster processor made of 10 Nm manufacturing process which makes it more energy efficient as well as powerful. Samsung claims the new processor offers 10% faster performance in terms of CPU and 21% faster GPU performance.
The expected chipset for the US market is Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (2.3 GHz Quad Core + 1.7 GHz Quad Core) and for some other markets like India we may get the Exynos 8895 (2.35 GHz Quad Core + 1.7 GHz Quad Core). The smartphone comes with 64 GB of Internal storage and it is expandable upto 256 GB using the micro SD Card.
There is 4 GB of ram which is a bit low considering most flagships are offering 6 GB and even Samsung is offering 6 GB Ram in the C9 Pro. Samsung has yet not made official the details about RAM , Storage and Processor variant details on it’s official website and in what geography it will offer which variants.
Rear Camera – Both the devices comes with same camera as the last years Samsung S7 edge with some refinements. The camera now comes with multi-shot technology which is capable of choosing the best shot from the burst of shots. The rear camera comes with 12 MP Dual camera sensor and f/1.7 aperture lens with 4k video support.
Front Camera – Things have improved for the front camera as it now comes with 8 Mega pixel sensor with auto-focus support and and f / 1.7 lens which will make sure you get the best low light performance from the front camera on the device.
Security , Fingerprint Scanner , Face and IRIS Scanner – Samsung has employed everything which is there to make the phone secure and easy to use. There is a face recognition sensor which unlocks the phone instantaneously when it sees the face of the person.
There is also an IRIS eye scanner which was also present on the Samsung Note 7 and can unlock the device. Samsung has pushed back the Fingerprint scanner at the back near the rear camera.
The placement looks odd and may users may sometime press the camera module instead of scanner at least when it is new to them. Camera lens cover may get smudgy due to that.
The smartphone also comes with Samsung Pay Support which they are rolling out globally.
Connectivity – The new Samsung S8 and S8 Plus comes with 4G LTE (Cat – 16), Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz), Bluetooth v5.0, USB Type-C and of course NFC support.
Sound and AKG Earphones – There is also a 3.5 mm head phone jack, and Samsung is giving an AKG earphones free along with the Samsung S8 and S8 Plus which otherwise costs $99.
The high end earphones comes with better noise cancellation and tangle free cable to make sure the music experience on the device is improved. There is though no mention of special DAC for sound in the S8.
Battery Life and Wireless Charging – The Samsung S8 comes with a 3000 mAH Capacity battery while the Samsung S8 plus comes with 3500 mAH Capacity battery.
Samsung said during the presentation that they have done 8 levels of battery tests to ensure that the batteries on both the devices are safe and free from any defects. Samsung has also not tried to fit in larger batteries on both devices and would likely play safe with these ones.
Both the smartphones come with fast charging support and also there is wireless charging for the S8 and S8 plus.
