3G Smartphones Are Dead, 4G Mobiles Account for 96% of Shipments : Report

As per the latest report shared by counterpoint research , Indian market is now flooded with 4G smartphones. The 4G LTE smartphones accounted for 96% of total smartphone shipments in Q1 2017 (Jan-Feb-March).

4G LTE has now become a standard feature for most smartphones launched above Rs 4,000 price in India. There are very rare smartphones which lack 4G connectivity and are 3G Only models getting launched in the country.

While last year we saw that the 4G smartphones were accounting to around 75% of the shipments. Most manufacturers are now looking to provide the 4G LTE as well as VOLTE feature in the smartphones.

Samsung Vivo and Oppo Grows at the Back of Selfie Smartphones

Another key finding from the research is that the selfie smartphones with above 8 Mega pixel front facing camera is driving growth in India. With Samsung, Oppo , Vivo and Gionee driving the growth numbers and have the major share of the Indian selfie smartphone market.

Samsung has 24.4% share followed by Oppo with 23.6% share and Vivo with 16.4 % share. While Samsung has just got more into selfie smartphones with the release of devices like C9 Pro which comes with 16 MP selfie camera, Oppo and Vivo have several devices with such front camera. Vivo recently launched the Vivo V5s while has launched a new Oppo F3 Plus in the Indian market.

I think there is just more to the selfie camera factor for the brand like Samsung, Oppo and Vivo to grow in India. The most important factor is there retail presence and robust offline sales along with online promotions.

While Samsung, Oppo and Vivo are growing in India it is not just the focus on selfies which is leading this growth.

If you visit any market in any city, you will be greeted with huge number of Banners from Oppo, Vivo and Samsung. Apart from huge indoor and outdoor retail promotions there is a significant push by retailers for these brands as they offer good margin as well as have huge distribution and after sales network in tier 2 and tier 3 cities in the country.
