Alpha 1.0 was the first android version which came in 2010. The beginning of Android ecosystem. Android Nougat 7.0 is the 14th major Android Version, which was released on 22 August 2016.
After 4 months of release the Android Version is now present on abysmal 0.7% of Android smartphones globally. 99.3% of Android users still are on the older Android versions. As per the data shared by Google, until Jan 09 2017.
The adoption rate is really slow. Only few smartphones are coming with the Android Nougat out of the box, and very few manufacturers have rolled out the update. Some of the lucky devices which have got it are Moto G4 Plus, Sony Xperia X and the X compact, One Plus 3 and the 3T. Samsung has not yet updated the S7 and S7 edge so far but is likely to do that this month on 17th Jan.
The other big news is the Android Froyo is dead, it is now present on less than 0.1% Android devices globally. Google stops reporting about an OS if it falls below that level.
Android Lollipop 5 still have the largest % user base with 33.4% share. It is down by 0.6% vs last month.
The Android Marshmallow 6 has grown from 26.3 to 29.6 in last month as most smartphones currently getting sold come with it.
The Android Kitkat 4.4 has 22.6% share while the Jelly bean has an 11.6 % share and Ice Cream Sandwich is now present on 1.1 % of devices. The Android Ginger bread is now on 1.0% of android smartphones.
Android Kitkat was launched back in Oct 2013, Lollipop in Oct 2014 , Marshmallow in Nov 2015. Overall the adoption rate is too slow considering these are essential updates for everyone. You are lucky if you are already on the latest Android version.
