Update 3-July-2016 – There is little positive news for the Gamers, AMD has decided to cut the price for the AMD RX 480 by Rs. 2,000 in India. The huge backlash by the gaming community, especially PC Gamers in India has been successful to make a change. I think feedback from Gamers can help to reduce the price parity in India Vs. The US. I am full heartedly with gamers in this cause. And I will from time to time communicate the same to both Nvidia and AMD executives in India. But more support we get from the Gamers more helpful it becomes.

The AMD RX 480 Price in the US Vs. The Price in India Before Price Cut and after price Cut compared.

Graphics CardInitial Price (Rs.)Current Price (Rs.)Price in the US (Rs.)
AMD RX 480 (8 GB)289902699015410
AMD RX 480 (4 GB)249902299013333

*1 USD = Rs. 67

Import Price Information (Source Zauba – Import/Export Portal) for the AMD RX 480 suggests that the graphics card costs Rs. 15,583 for the 8 GB version while another Gigabyte Card costs Rs. 17,170. These prices are much below the sales price. (Sales Margin + Taxes = 26990 – 15583 = Rs. 11407) a whopping 73% mark up on the graphics card import price.

Update 29-June-2016 – As dull-witted as it gets, The AMD Radeon RX 480 is available for Rs. 28,990 in the Indian market.  The 4 GB variant in the global market costs $199, and the 8 GB variant costs just $239. As we reported earlier, the Graphics card was available on MD-Computers for Rs. 30,200 for the 8 GB variant and now is available for Rs. 27,200. None of the large retailers have stocked it so far, Flipkart, Amazon or Snapdeal – the new AMD card is not even listed. We are appalled with the egregious pricing of graphics cards in India to the same extent as we were with the GTX 1070 and 1080 prices in India. We will keep you posted as we get information of cheaper deals on the RX 480.

AMD RX 480

Article (2nd June 2016) – The AMD Radeon RX480 is priced at $199 (Rs. 13,000) in the international market. The India pricing story can be a lot different, and it can launch close to Rs. 20,000 by brands like Sapphire and Asus.

Recently, Nvidia launched the GTX 1080 and 1070 graphics cards based on the Pascal architecture. The GTX 1080 is on sale in India available for Rs. 63,500.

The India pricing aspect aside, the Radeon RX480 offers incredible performance for the money.  Moreover, it provides>5 Teraflops compute performance which is close to the AMD R9 390.

Considering the price we are getting a performance faster than a GTX 970, it is going to be a phenomenal upgrade for the PC Gamers looking for a graphics card in the Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 price range.

But it is also strange move by AMD not to launch a high-end card based on the new Polaris architecture (14 nm manufacturing process) to compete with the GTX 1080.

Is AMD not looking to fight Nvidia for the high-end graphics card market? We think they will launch some more high-end cards shortly to compete.

Furthermore, Dr. Lisa Su (president and CEO AMD) and Raja Koduri (senior vice president and chief architect of the AMD Radeon Technologies Group) took center stage to share the vision of AMD and future of Gaming and VR at the Event.

Raj Koduri shared, they wanted to make the best low-cost graphics card for 250 million PC gamers, not only for playing games but also for VR experience.  In fact,  the AMD RX480 is the cheapest VR Ready graphics card you can buy.

One fascinating fact he shared was that 84.5% of PC gamers buy a graphics card priced between the $100 to $300 price range. It is the price range where the AMD RX480 offers incredible value for money.

Raja Koduri took a dig at the Nvidia GTX 1080 and called it an expensive $700 solution, and you can achieve the same level of performance in $400, by cross firing the two AMD RX480.

He showcased the frame rates in the Ashes of Singularity running AMD RX480 in Crossfire Vs. A Single GTX 1080, and the crossfire was four frames ahead.

It looks like a delightful deal from AMD at an incredibly low price, for the majority of Gamers. Never before so much power was available for the PC gamers in this price range.

AMD RX 480 Gaming and Benchmark Performance

The Rise of Tomb Raider – Performance is same as the Nvidia GTX 970.

Battlefield 4  – Performance is slower compared to the Nvidia GTX 970.

Crysis 3  – Performance is slower compared to the Nvidia GTX 970.

The Division  – Performance is faster compared to the Nvidia GTX 970.

GTA 5  – Performance is slower compared to the Nvidia GTX 970.

Is AMD RX 480 a Good Deal at 27k?

I am not impressed with the performance as the expectations set by AMD was very high. Moreover, all early reviews state it is slower than expected.

In fact, the RX480 matches the performance of a GTX 970 with the current state of drivers. Besides, the Nvidia GTX 1070 is in its own league. We were expecting a performance close to a GTX 980, but the RX 480 falls shorts by a mile.

We will wait for more matured driver updates from AMD to finally conclude, but it can take a month or two. Also, I will have to check the performance of the updated drivers and OC ability to see how far can the card push the gaming performance.

If you are looking for an upgrade from AMD 380X or R9 380, it is not going to be significant. And insult to the injury, the pricing even makes it a poor deal for the Indian buyers.

On the other hand, for US gamers it may be a great deal at $199 where you can get the performance of GTX 970 at just Rs. 13,000 but not in India at least.

Notably, The current pricing is very similar to the Nvidia GTX 970 which is available for Rs. 26,000 in the market.

Also, the noise levels and the temperatures reported for the reference cooler based cards are too high for comfort. You should consider this before purchasing the RX 480 or wait for the custom cooler based cards.

At this price, the Nvidia GTX 1070 is a much better option with an additional 12K price tag but a much better driver eco-system and user experience. Also, you should compare it to the Nvidia GTX 1060 that is available at a lower price in India.

It is definitely a great card for $199, probably too much enthusiasm and hype of reaching a GTX 980 performance caused some despair to Pc gamers. But if the price goes down to Rs. 18K to 22K then definitely the RX 480 is a great deal.

  1. Hi Kanuj,

Great article. I’m going to build my new pc with the following configuration:
    AMD A10 7860K
    MSI A68HM Grenade
    WD Blue 1 TB
    G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB DDR3

Which gpu should I go for nvidia gtx 960 or should i wait for amd rx 470 to be properly available in India?

    1. mdcomputers sapphire-graphics-card-radeon rx 470
Here u can find rx 470 in 16999. Rx 470 will be good for gaming with 10% lower performance than rx 480 for that price where rx 480 in 22999.
And one thing if u can afford skylake i5 6402p, it will be better for your new system

  2. Does these benchmarks includes only dx11 results only?
Should have included the dx12 and vulkan benchmarks also.

  3. Thanks Eklavya for your comment ! Nice to have informed readers like you , Yes AMD did disappointed us with the India pricing and even the brands available !

  4. Insane pricing, Its not that these guys are selling gpu for the first time. THe r9 380x was on sale for 229$ in US and I can easily find it 20-22K INR online and 18-19K INR in Nehru Place. 28K INR is too high to ask, after so much gtx 970 sold in India I think the rx 480 and the upcoming gtx 1060 will be big flop due to their insane pricing.

  5. Gg AMD lost… Poor performance than the GTX 970 for higher price…. Also GTX 1060 is launching at lower price but still beating GTX 970 by a mile…23k for GTX 980 ish performance and 26k. For GTX 970 ish performance… Wtf AMD.. I was hoping to go to team red..not anymore tho.. Also RX 480 is not available anywhere except 1-2 places so price is being gouged to 29k..
