Apple has sold an incredible number of smartphones in the last 9 years as confirmed by the Cupertino Giant – 1 billion to be precise.
Tim Cook shared the information internally to some of the employees last week. Steve Jobs first launched the iPhone in 2007 and in the first year. Apple sold around 13 million iPhones in the first year. Apple was able to sell 500 million smartphones by the end of 2013.
In the last 2 years, Apple has sold close to 500 million iPhone globally.
But the latest quarter sales number came out and Apple has declined in sales volume for the second time. Apple was able to sell 40.4 million smartphones in this quarter which is 15% drop Year on Year.
Net revenue for Apple was down by 14.6% and the profit also slumped by 27%. The iPhone sales are saturating in the developed economies and even in the Chinese market which contributes roughly 10% of global iPhone sales. The picture doesn’t look rosy for the Cupertino tech giant.

On the other hand, India has been the silver lining for Apple as they witness 51% growth in sales in the last 3 quarters. Tim Cook said India is the fastest growing market for iPhone and he sees a lot of potential in the vibrant country.
While there are concerns about Apple’s revenue growth, Samsung has reported highest revenue in this quarter in the last 2 years.
The growth in revenue and sales has come from the highly successful Samsung S7 and S7 edge smartphones.
Samsung also has seen a sharp increase in the sales of OLED panels contributing to earnings.
Sales for Samsung rose by 5% clocking 45 billion dollar revenue and profits surged by 18% to 7.19 billion.
Samsung strong growth is expected to continue this year and the upcoming Samsung Note 7 will add momentum to it. While Apple fans await the iPhone 7 or the iPhone 6SE which is going to get launched in September 2016. A lot depends on the upcoming iPhone 7, Can it provide a great proposition for buyers to upgrade from the current generation of Apple devices.
