The Asus Zenfone 3 and Asus Zenfone Ultra got unveiled today at Computex 2016, in Taipei, Taiwan. The smartphones got unveiled along with the Zenfone 3 Deluxe as well as the transformer / Zenbook laptops. The event was presided over by the Asus Chairman Jonney Shih who also introduced other products like a cool looking robot known as ZenBo at the Event.
The Zenfone 3 comes with decent specs and more importantly has a new metal and glass body more like a One Plus X or the Samsung A7. The smartphone has a 2.5 D curve glass with Corning’s Gorilla glass 3 coating on the front and back of the device. The smartphone has the Zen’s signature concentric-circle pattern at the back.
Asus calls the design as “Zen design”.
The edges and corners are metallic to add strength to the frame, a glass and metal body make it look stunning. The smartphone is 7.7 mm thin and it weighs 155 grams.
Powering the device is the Snapdragon 625 processor (Octa-Core SOC) from Qualcomm. Further, it uses the 14nm manufacturing process and comes with 4 GB Of Ram. There is Adreno 506 GPU for playing games on the large display.
The processor is quite energy efficient and even has support CAT 6 LTE up to 300 MBPS data transfer speeds.
For imaging, it comes with a 16 Megapixel camera with Sony IMX298 sensor and with optical image stabilization too. The camera comes with 6P largan lens and has f/2.0 aperture for capturing low light images.
The auto-focus system is Trifocus like the Zenfone Deluxe utilizing laser, PDAF, and continuous auto-focus. The camera can focus in 0.03 seconds as per Asus. It also has the Sapphire glass protection.
The Asus Zenfone 3 is capable of recording the 4K (UHD) videos. The front camera is also decent with 8 MP resolution and wide angle lens.
The mobile comes with 5.5-inch bezel IPS LCD display and Full HD (1920*1080) resolution. Also, there is Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 and it comes with thin 2.1 mm bezel and has 77.3 screens to body ratio.
Asus has integrated the Sonic sound technology in the Zenfone 3 which they use in the Zenbook laptops with 5 magnet speakers to have studio-grade 24-bit/192kHz playback audio quality.
OS & Storage
The Asus Zenfone 3 runs on the Zen UI 3.0 along with the Android Marshmallow 6.0 OS. The smartphone will be available in 32 GB / 64 GB and 128 GB variants with the option to increase the storage to 128 GB using the Micro-sd card.
The smartphone comes with a fingerprint scanner at the back, there is a USB 2.0 Type C port at the bottom located between the speaker grills. The Asus Zenfone 3 has Dual sim support and is 4G LTE compatible.
The Asus Zenfone 3 comes with 3000 mAH battery capacity which is sufficient to run the device all day, considering Asus also has expertise in doing tons of software optimizations to extend the battery life.
Price and Colors
It is available for $249 or Rs. 16,000, and may take a few weeks to launch in the Indian market. The smartphone is available in 4 colors – White, Black, Gold and Aqua Blue.
The Asus Zenfone 3 looks evolved and for good and it is more suited to high-end mobile buyers who are looking for best bang for the buck. Also, the price is very reasonable. However, we are not sure about the India price yet.

As per the recent information shared by a Taiwan based smartphone fingerprint scanner maker Taiwan-based Elan Microelectronics and China-based Good fix , Asus is planning to use the fingerprint scanner technology in the upcoming Zenfone 3.
With more and more smartphones getting the Fingerprint scanner technology, IC design companies are predicting that soon the fingerprint scanners will be available for $5 (Rs. 330) in the coming months.
Fingerprint scanners are going to be an essential part of smartphones with Android pay and other related technologies taking shape in future.
It may use Intel or a Snapdragon processor, MediaTek use is unlikely.
The Asus Zenfone 2 uses the Intel Atom Z3560, Quad Core processor while Asus has used the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 in the less pricey Zenfone 2 laser.
Asus has also announced back in October that they will start a manufacturing hub in India and share the company’s vision for the Indian market.
Peter Chang Country head Asus further added, “We are aggressively targeting the Indian market. We aim to achieve 5% market share in the country by next year and empower all our customers with luxury.”
