There are several good mid-range mobiles available in the market, let’s compare 3 latest offerings in the 15k to 20k price range to find which stand out.

Nokia has yesterday launched the Nokia 6 (2018) in the Indian market for an asking price of Rs. 16,999, along with the Nokia 7 Plus that costs Rs. 25,999.

Also, Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 5 Pro recently, that is currently the crowd favorite in the sub 20k price range. We will compare the Nokia 6 with the Redmi Note 5 Pro higher variant that costs Rs. 16,999 and comes with 64 GB storage and 6 GB Ram.

This year Nokia is trying to make a come back with the new Nokia 6 (2018). This update brings the best-in-class Snapdragon 630 processor which of course is a significant update and the company is heavily betting on it.

The Nokia 6(2018) was launched in China and is now available in the Indian market from 6th April 2018.

Having said that, the Honor 7X stands in the same price bracket and offers similar specifications. Notably, the Honor 7X higher variant comes with 64 GB storage and 4 GB ram and is available for Rs. 15,999.

So let’s make a quick comparison between the three phones.

Design

All the three devices have a premium look and feel, thanks to the all-metal design. However, the Nokia 6(2018) stands out of the rest due to its sturdy build quality as it is made from aluminum 6000 material and comes with superb fit and finish.

The fingerprint scanner is placed on the rear for all of them, and Honor claims to have the fastest among all. The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with an Apple iPhone X like design with similar looking rear camera placement.

The Honor 7X with its near bezel-less front looks futuristic and comes with a metallic design which looks similar to the iPhone 7 plus.

The Nokia 6(2018) is chunky and comes with the robust build but satisfying when held in hand. The design is a personal preference and all 3 phones are gorgeous looking.

  • Redmi Note 5 PRO – Thickness (8.05 mm) and Weight 181 grams.
  • Nokia 6 2018 – Thickness (8.15 mm) and Weight N/A.
  • Huawei Honor 7X – Thickness (7.5 mm) and weight 165 grams

Clearly, the Honor 7X is the sleekest out of the 3 phones and offers a compact build and ease of usage.

Display

Honor has played smart in this category by sticking with the trending near bezel-less 18:9 display. Despite flaunting a huge 5.93-inch FHD+ (2160*1080 pixels) display, the Honor 7X’s footprint is similar to that of a traditional 5.5-inch device.

The Nokia 6(2018), on the other hand, comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display with a regular 16:9 aspect ratio which is a shame considering most phones these days come with a bezel-less display.

Lastly, the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 5.99 Inch display that has an FHD+ resolution (2160*1080 pixels) and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Both the Honor 7X and the Redmi Note 5 Pro scores higher on the display.

Rear Camera

As far as the optics are concerned, the Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Honor 7X feature a dual-camera setup on the rear.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a dual 12-megapixel(f/2.2) + 5-megapixel(f/2.0) camera offers stunning portrait mode, and when thrown in a bit of light it produces stunning pictures.

And, we can find a dual 16-megapixel +  2-megapixel camera on the Honor 7X whose performance is not as impressive as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 PRO but still is a decent shooter.

Whereas, the Nokia 6(2018) features a single 16-megapixel f/2.0 lens aided with dual-LED dual-tone flash on the rear.

Front Selfie Camera

The Redmi Note 5 Pro easily dwarfs the other 2 phones in the selfie camera department with the 20 Megapixel f/2.0 aperture selfie shooter.

On the other hand, the Nokia 6 comes with an 8-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Lastly, Honor 7X similar to Nokia 6 has an 8 Megapixel front camera without a dedicated Selfie flash.

Software

The Redmi Note 5 Pro runs on the MIUI 9.2 along with the Android Nougat 7.1 OS which is heavily modded and looks different in comparison to the stock Android Experience on the Nokia 6.

Besides, the Nokia 6 (2018) comes with the latest Android Oreo 8.0 OS with stock experience which in my opinion is the best and more user friendly.

Also, Nokia 6 is an Android One Phone so you will get the future updates faster than both the Honor and Xiaomi phones.

The EMUI 5.1(based on Android Nougat) running on the Honor 7X does offer some extra features which are normally not directly available in pure Android.

I personally prefer Stock Android, and similarly, it comes down to the individual’s preference and taste.

Hardware Storage and Performance

The Nokia 6(2018) packs a Snapdragon 630 processor and the Adreno 508 GPU which is significantly faster than last Gen Nokia 6 and offers a fluid experience. It is ideal for gaming and running multiple Apps.

There is 3 GB RAM, 32 GB of internal storage(expandable up to 128GB), is less in comparison to the Honor 7X and Redmi Note 5 PRO.

The Redmi Note 5 PRO runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Processor and Adreno 509 GPU that offers much faster performance in comparison to the SD 630 in the Nokia 6(2018) Also, it comes with 6 GB RAM and 64 GB internal memory that is expandable to 256 GB.

Lastly, the Honor 7X comes with Kirin 659 chipset Octa-Core processor and offers a similar performance as SD 625. It even has 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB onboard storage which is user expandable.

Battery Life

Coming to the Battery life the Redmi Note 5 PRO clearly wins with its massive 4000 mAH capacity battery, followed by the Huawei Honor 7X with 3340 mAH capacity battery.

The Nokia 6(2018) offers a 3000 mAH capacity battery without fast charging support.

Concluding Thoughts

Clearly, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 PRO offers a superior proposition for buyers with a better processor, more Ram, storage, better rear/selfie camera and battery life.

Even if you purchase the lower variant that comes with 4 GB Ram and 64 GB internal storage for Rs. 13,999 it is a better deal than the rest.

If you wish to buy a sleek phone the Honor 7X is also a decent option and if you need the stock Android experience and ease of buying and after sales service, the Nokia 6 (2018) is an alluring option in this price range.
