Blackberry unveiled the new Blackberry KEYOne smartphone at the MWC 2017.  The smartphone is launched at a ridiculously high price of Rs 39,999 or $620 in India considering its mediocre specs.

Blackberry keep thinking that they are Apple, but they are not. They are not even considered anything in the new Android and iOS dominated the world. The smartphone is exclusive to Amazon India and will go on sale starting August 8th.

The device was showcased at the CES 2017 but it was not named back then. Instead, it was referred as ” Blackberry Mercury“, whereas according to BlackBerry they never even named it. Nevertheless, now it is called as Blackberry KEYone.

Top Features of BlackBerry KEYone

It could be one the last devices to come with a physical QWERTY keyboard. Additionally, it is not manufactured by Blackberry but by the Chinese company, TCL communications.

The phone looks handsome enough to stand out from the crowd iPhone 6s and S7 clones. Those curves on the sides and bottom, along with a flat top gives it a good contrasting design.

The front has a sizeable display with capacitive buttons. Below those buttons is the physical keypad. There’s no sliding mechanism like BlackBerry Priv which would hide those keys with the screen.

The keyboard has been further refined and is now clickier then ever says Blackberry.

It still retains the gestures and the ability to use it as a track-pad. Moving through the app drawer, websites, emails are just a swipe away. It not only comes with predictive typing but also allows the user to swipe on the keyboard in order to select those predictive texts. A feature also is seen on the Priv.

BlackBerry has also added new shortcuts on some alphabets of the keyboard to speed up typing.

According to them, one can set up to 52 shortcuts on the keyboard. For instance, long pressing “T” would open Twitter, pressing “C” would open the camera.

The unique feature is the fingerprint placement on this phone. The KEYone has the sensor embedded under the spacebar, which makes it unique and also convenient at the same time.

Design BlackBerry KeyOne

The back has a non-slippery material, which feels like a mix of soft leather and carbon fiber. It complements the premium look of the phone sets it class apart from metal and glass me to devices.

The sides are made of aluminum, which has a sturdy feel to it. Even the antenna lines are placed intelligently and manage to complement the design language.

The bottom sports the USB type-C port flanked between the microphone and the mono speaker. The phone’s thick enough measuring at 9.4 mm and also comes with 3.5 mm audio jack, which resides at the top.

Mobile sports a 4.5-inch FHD display with 3:2 ratio touchscreen. Due to the physical keyboard, it might take some time for the users to adjust to it’s smaller display.

Key Specs BlackBerry KeyOne

It is driven by a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SOC along with Adreno 506 GPU. It’s not a flagship but is able to capture performance and reliable battery life.

It sports mere 3 GB of RAM, which is certainly not the norm in 2017 for high-end phones like KEYone.

The Keyone features a 12 MP rear camera with 1.55 um pixel size with f/2.0 aperture. Which basically is the same setup used in Pixel phones.

Although, there’s no guarantee of similar results we can expect good performance. A phone must have strong and reliable post-processing performance as it plays a crucial role in it.

At the front side, there is an 8 MP selfie shooter.

The phone ships with Android N v7.1 out of the box. There are all the usual pre-installed BlackBerry’s own apps like Dtek security, BlackBerry HUB and many more.

Powering the phone is a massive 3505 mAh battery pack. A very power efficient SOC and a big battery is a great recipe for a stellar battery life.

It’s a similar setup found on Motorola’s Moto Z Play. Lets not even compare it to Redmi Note 4 which comes with same hardware specs.

Blackberry KEYone is a very premium design smartphone with great battery life, an exceptional keypad and decent camera, it is not meant for everyone and a there is a small niche of buyers who would find value in the device for others there are many great options like the OnePlus 5 and the Huawei Honor 8 PRO.
