27-October-2021 – Samsung has started mass production of DDR5 DRAM and it will be available by the end of this year.

According to the company, the newly developed memory will have a five-layer EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet) process that enhances the performance by up to 20%.

The main focus of Samsung is to meet the rapidly growing data demands of IT systems globally. The new technological advancement will help in medical research, financial markets, autonomous driving, smart cities, AI (artificial intelligence), ML (machine learning), and 5G workloads – said Young-Soo Sohn- Vice President of Samsung Electronics.

Evidently, Samsung Electronics is the global leader in memory advancement technology. The company is manufacturing the smallest 14 nm DRAM, which is based on EUV (extreme ultra-violet) technology.

Above all, it has become important to improve the performance and greater yields when we talk about DRAM in the present time. This is possible by using the EUV technology to meet the patterning accuracy.

Samsung DRAM Max Capacity

As per the reports, Samsung has improved the DRAM structure by increasing the number of EUV layers to five. Furthermore, the company has announced that they will manufacture the 512 GB DDR5 module based on High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process technology.

The new ram will use the cutting-edge HKMG technology that is used in logic semiconductors to improve the performance of DDR5 Ram modules.

Indeed to gain the highest bit density and to strengthen overall productivity, Samsung has applied five layers to the 14 nm DRAM structure.

The company claims that using such the latest technology, they will achieve about 20% performance gain, as compared to DDR4.

Also, this technology will provide the most differentiated memory solutions in the data-driven world of 5G, AI, Data Science, and the metaverse.

Performance

When it comes to performance benchmark, the company declares that DDR5 will speed up to 7.2 Gb/s – more than double the speed of DDR4 RAM, which has a capacity of up to 3.2 Gbps.

It is too early to predict the impact of DDR5 on gaming and other workloads and we may have to wait for more information to come in from real-world testing.

Yet, we have to wait for the launch of the DDR5 Ram to get detailed information on specs, features, performance, and pricing.
