Huawei Honor 8 India Launch Details

Huawei has launched the new Huawei Honor 8 in the Indian market today.  The smartphone was originally launched in China in July 2016.  The Honor 8 is priced at Rs. 29,999 and will be available for purchase both from Flipkart and Amazon India.

The Huawei Honor 8 is the successor to the successful Huawei Honor 7 and comes with significant upgrades. The smartphone will compete with the Asus Zenfone 3, Gionee F1 Plus and the OnePlus 3 in this price range.

For starters, the Huawei Honor 8 has stunning looks and offers immaculate build quality. Besides, it has layered glass design at the back which reflects light in a manner that it creates an aura. Also, the front side has 2.5 D curve glass which seamlessly merges in the curved metallic edges.

notably, it looks a bit similar to the Samsung S7 and is definitely one of the most gorgeous looking devices made by Huawei.  Also, the Honor 8 like the Samsung S7 suffers from a slippery glass surface and will be prudent to use it with a cover.

The Huawei Honor 8 comes with 5.2-inch display with IPS LCD screen and offers Full HD resolution with 423 PPI. The smartphone weighs 150 grams and has a thickness of 7.9 mm.

Camera Details

Dual Camera – The key highlight of the Honor 8 are the 2 Rear cameras, similar to the recently launched Google Pixel & iPhone 7 Plus smartphones. The Dual rear camera is in vogue with modern smartphones.  The Dual rear camera works together to create a greater depth of field and offer a more immersive bokeh effect.

One camera has a monochromatic lens which captures the image in black and white while the other lens captures an RGB colored image. The image signal processors work to merge both the images and get a final shot with more details and contrasts.

Overall the rear camera offers great details and colors and is a worthy camera as per initial reports. Huawei Honor 8 is the second Huawei smartphone in India (this year) with a Dual camera, first being the Huawei P9.

There is a front camera with 8 Megapixel resolution which can click decent selfies in all light conditions.

The Huawei Honor 8 comes with 3 Axis Electronic Image stabilization and has f/2.2 aperture lens with laser Autofocus and dual-tone flash.  It can record 1080P videos but misses on 4K video recording.

Performance and OS

Performance – Beyond having a good camera, the Honor 8 promises decent performance. Powering the phone is the Hisilicon Kirin 950 Octa-Core 64 Bit processor.  The processor has a maximum clock speed of 2.3 GHz for the high-performance cores and the 4 low-performance cores have 1.8 GHz.

The Kirin 950 is definitely better in comparison to the Snapdragon 625 (Asus Zenfone 3) and Snapdragon 650 or even the Snapdragon 810 (One Plus 2).

However, it is no match for the Snapdragon 820 used in the One Plus 3 as far as benchmark score goes. Kirin 950 scores 95354 on the Antutu benchmark in comparison to the 130567 for the Snapdragon 820.

Moreover, the processor is accompanied by the Mali-T880 GPU and there is 4 GB of ram for lag-free multitasking.

Operating System – The Huawei Honor 8 runs on the Android Marshmallow 6.0 along with the Huawei custom UI – EMUI 4.1.

Notably, Huawei has promised that the smartphone will get 2 years of software updates, which essentially means that buyers would get at least the Android Nougat 7.0.

Storage, Connectivity and Battery Life

Storage – It comes with ample storage as it has 64 GB of internal storage expandable up to 128 GB using a micro-sd card.

Battery Life – Device offers a decent battery back and has 3000 mAH battery capacity which can last all day at least without the need for charging.

Connectivity options include USB Type C port, NFC and 4G LTE / VOLTE, everything we expect from a modern high-end smartphone.  The Huawei Honor 8 comes with 2 years of warranty and Huawei is also offering 3 months of free screen replacement in case you fumble and drop your Honor 8.

Initial Thoughts

While everything looks great the price is not convivial for everyone, we would have liked it a bit cheaper. The Honor 8 impresses with the premium design, build quality and camera capabilities.

But at the same time, there are other good options in the market like One Plus 3 and Xiaomi Mi5 using a superior Snapdragon 820 processor that offers a decent performance.

Lastly, it is available in 3 colors – Sapphire Blue, Ice White, and Gold. The rose gold color is not available in India. The sale has already started and you can buy it from Flipkart or Amazon.

  1. The Huawei Honor 8 is a pretty good mobile phone with promised system updates for the next 2 years, a 3D Effect back and it does turn heads around with its dual camera lens (12MP Monochrome + 12MP RGB) configuration but I think at a price tag of Rs.29,999 it lacks some serious features such as a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 Scratch Protective Layer (though it has Corning Gorilla 3 Scratch Protective Layer with 3 months warranty) and IP68 Certified Water & Dust Resistance (I think it’s splashproof, i.e., can withstand light rain) and also a powerful Snapdragon proccessor would have been nice! So I conclude by saying that it’s worth your hard earned money but if it had some of the features mentioned above it would have been a bonus…
