The most popular Linux based Operating system Ubuntu has finally come to mobile phones. The Aquaris E4.5 is one of the first devices to run the mobile edition of Ubuntu.

Back in 2013 Canonical Ltd planned to release a high concept phone named as “Ubuntu Edge” which was hoped to produce a smartphone with 128GB storage, 4 GB RAM.

Dual boot (Android and Ubuntu) and ability to transform into a desktop PC when connected to a monitor and keyboard. However, it was a failure, and the Edge remained as a concept

The failure has not stopped them, and after a long time, Ubuntu phone has come to reality with the launch of BQ Aquaris E4.5 in Europe.

The Aquarius E4.5 previously ran on Android, and it now runs Ubuntu OS with the same hardware.

The phone features a 4.5-inch screen with qHD resolution (960*540) and Dragontrail glass protection. It is powered by a Quad-core MediaTek processor, 1 GB RAM.

Further, the mobile has 8 GB internal storage with micro SD support up to 32 GB.

The BQ Aquaris E 4.5 boasts of IPS OGS(One Glass Solution) screen with wide 178-degree viewing angles. The QHD resolution screen offers 240 PPI.  The screen is protected by the alkali-aluminosilicate glass that is scratch resistant and makes it a robust smartphone for rough usage.

The battery capacity of the smartphone is 2150 mAh and smartphone is quite light in weight with only 123 grams.

The phone has an 8-megapixel rear camera with L.E.D flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies.

The phone comes with dual sim and offers standard connectivity like wifi, 3G and Bluetooth support.

The Aquaris E4.5 Runs on Ubuntu Touch OS

The current version of the operating system is Ubuntu touch, and it provides a different user interface based on gestures and touch.

Furthermore, Ubuntu has planned to release high-end smartphones in future let’s see if it could compete with Android and make users switch to new Operating System.

The significant challenges that are faced by the other operating Systems like Tizen by Samsung or Amazon’s Fire phone are app developer support and availability of favorite Apps.

Lastly, the Android smartphones are becoming cheaper day by day. The new entrants have considerable hurdles to overcome, before becoming successful. We need another OS that has to be as revolutionary as Android to have some real competition in the market.

The availability and price of BQ Aquaris E4.5 are unknown for the Indian subcontinent. We will keep you posted.
