Google Nexus 5X Pros Cons and Initial Thoughts

Google Nexus 5X reminds me more of the Google Nexus 5 (2013), which is the most successful and highest sold model of the Nexus series so far.(as per Google).

The Google Nexus 5X brings the experience of Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the users in a near flagship product.

Let’s talk about the Specs first and some of the Pros and Cons of the Google Nexus 5X which got unveiled yesterday at an event hosted by Google in the US.

Sundar Pichai was quite happy to share that they have been able to Add 40 million new Android Devices world wide and increased the total number of Active Android devices from 1 billion to 1.4 billion on 30 days active base count.

Google also unveiled the Google Nexus 6P along with the Google Nexus 5X smartphones. The new tablet, Google Pixel C was also unveiled.

The Google Nexus 6P is a flagship smartphone competing with the likes of Apple iPhone 6s Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. The Google Nexus 5X is a premium near flagship device.

Moreover, it is a superior upper mid-range device with starting price of Rs. 31,900 for the 16 GB version while the 32 GB version comes at Rs. 35,900.

The Nexus 5X is now available on Amazon India (Rs. 31,999).

The starting price for the Google Nexus 6P is Rs. 39,999 for the 32 GB version.

The Google Nexus 5X has a 1920*1080 Full HD Display and comes with a 5.2-inch screen.

For reference the older Google Nexus 5 came with a 5-inch display and a 443 PPI screen in 2013, not much has changed in 2 years.

The Google Nexus 5X looks great and has a  premium injection molded polycarbonate housing. It is not metallic mobile like it’s elder cousin the Nexus 6P.

The Nexus 5X screen comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection and also has the Fingerprint and smudge-resistant oleo-phobic coating.

On the performance front, the smartphone comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 1.8 GHz Hexa-core 64-bit SOC.

The processor is accompanied by Adreno 418 GPU for a great gaming experience.

Besides, it comes with 2 GB LPDDR3 Ram which I think is a bit low in comparison to the 3 GB LLDDR4 Ram(much faster) on the Google Nexus 6P.

For reference, the Google Nexus 5 in 2013 came with 2 GB RAM, and the smartphone has a similar price like the Nexus 5X.

The Nexus 5X runs on the latest Google Android OS 6.0 Android Marshmallow and will also get the future updates faster compared to the other brand devices.

Besides, the mobile comes in 2 storage variants the 16 GB or 32 GB.

Also, it is slightly thicker in comparison to the Google Nexus 6P. The Google Nexus 5X measures 7.9 mm in thickness though has a low weight of 136 grams.

The smartphone will be available in Carbon, Quartz and Ice white colors.

The Google Nexus 5X comes with a single front-facing speaker and 3 microphones.

For Photography, it has 12.3 Mega –Pixel camera with 1.55 µm pixels and f/2.0 aperture size. There is IR laser-assisted autofocus camera which also allows for 4K (30 fps) video capture.

The Google Nexus 5X and the Google Nexus 6P uses the same lens for the rear camera.

However, the front camera is on the Nexus 5X comes with a lowely 5 Megapixel resolution and 1.4 µm pixels, f/2.0 aperture lens. (Nexus 6P has an 8 MP Camera).

Notably, the front camera on Nexus 5X is a significant improvement compared to the Google Nexus 6 or the Google Nexus 5.

Moreover, it comes with 2,700 mAh Battery capacity which is excellent and will efficiently run it all day.

Considering the smartphone weighs just 136 grams, battery capacity is decent.

The battery has fast charging support: which allows up to 3.8 hours of use from only 10 minutes of charging.

The Google Nexus 5X offers 4G LTE (Cat: 6) connectivity along with the native 3G and 2G connectivity.

The Google Nexus 5X has support for Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band (2.4 GHz, 5.0 GHz),  Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC for Android Pay.

The mobile comes with the reversible USB Type C port, has a single nano sim support.

Also, it comes with a Fingerprint sensor at the back which is intuitive and has machine learning algorithm built in to ensure best user experience.

Verdict: Should You Buy the Google Nexus 5X

Overall a great mobile but the pricing is not very low.  Google has kept the price similar to the Nexus 5 price in 2013, but they have not factored the rise of Xiaomi or the OnePlus and another dozen alternative that buyer has today.

The smartphone has great performance, camera, Fingerprint sensor and battery life to name a few pro points.

When we compare it to the elder cousin the Google Nexus 6P, there are also some of the low points like lack of 2K display, metallic body,  8 MP front camera, only 2 GB of RAM and lack of Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.

Even if we compare it to the OnePlus 2 64 GB version which is much cheaper than the Google Nexus 5X, the scales tilt towards the OnePlus 2.

Having said this, the Nexus 5X has nothing missing; you definitely can buy it for the best Android experience and has an ideal 5.2-inch screen, really portable and easy to work.

But if you are a tech enthusiast and want the best of everything, the slightly expensive Google Nexus 6P will appeal more to you.
