Helio P23, Helio P30 Unveiled Offers Better Specs and Performance

Mediatek has unveiled the next generation of Helio Processors – Helio P30 and the Helio P23. Both the new processors will be used in mid-range smartphones and will succeed the Helio P10 and Helio P20 processors.

Helio P23 and Helio P30

The new Mediatek processors (info source Media-tek) come with some upgrades in terms of performance as the GPU and modem used by the processors are improved. While both the Helio P30 and Helio P23 uses the Cortex A-53 cores with Octa-Core architecture similar to the ones used in the older Helio processors.

Notably, both the processors are not using the Cortex A73 cores which is used in the top of the line Mediatek Helio X30 processor. Let’s look at the key specs for both the mobile processors from Mediatek.

Key Specs for Helio P23

  • 8 Core Architecture with Cortex A53 Cores

Key Features and Performance Upgrades – Helio P23 and Helio P30

Above, I have highlighted a couple of differences between the Helio P30 and Helio P23. While the clock speed and the architecture on the both the processors are same we are not expecting a big boost in performance even when compared to the Helio P20.

The GPU has been upgraded to the latest Mali G71 MP2 with a clock speed of 700 MHz and 900 MHz respectively on the Helio P23 and Helio P30. Earlier chipsets like Helio P20 and the Helio P25 used the Mali T880 MP2 GPU. We can expect a decent performance boost for games and graphics intensive tasks from the new processors.

Helio P23, Helio P30

The processors come with support for LPDDR4 ram upto a clock speed of 1600 MHz while some of the processors like Snapdragon 660 or 835 offer 1866 MHz support.

Another Highlight feature for the Helio P23 and the Helio P30 is it’s Dual Sim 4G VOLTE support, as more and more users are opting for Dual sim in India / Asia it is going to be a great feature.

The key upgrade is the support for Dual cameras as most smartphone manufacturers are now coming with Dual camera phones in the mid-range. The Helio P23 offer 13MP+13MP camera support while the Helio P30 will offer 16 MP+16 MP dual rear camera support.

Additionally, the Helio P30 is equipped with a new Vision Processing Unit which Mediatek claims help in the processing of video and images along with the Image Signal Processor. The  Vision Processing unit reduced the load and improves the efficiency of the processor CPU.

Both the processors will be available in Q4 2017, we can expect the smartphones with these processors to come from September or October 2017. The Helio P30 is going to be sparingly used and will initially be part of smartphones launched in China. While we can expect the Helio P23 to be used in more mid range phones.
