Huawei Honor 7 vs Google Nexus 5X – The Better Choice

Both the smartphones are top-selling devices currently in 20 to 25k price range.  A lot of readers have asked which is a better choice, whether to go for the Honor 7 or buy the Google Nexus 5X.

Huawei Honor 7 vs Google Nexus 5X

We will do a detailed analysis of both smartphones and see which is a better choice for you.

Huawei Honor 7 was launched on 7th Oct. 2015. The current price of this mobile is Rs 22,999. While the Google Nexus 5X was launched on 13th Oct. 2015. The current price of this mobile is same as Honor 7 ie. Rs 22,999.

Design

Both the mobiles have a 5.2-inch display with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and come with same ie. 424 ppi. The major difference, however, lies in the build material, on one hand, we have the Huawei Honor 7 which has a metallic body while on the other side is Nexus 5X which comes with a matte plastic finish.

Though both the smartphones look decent in their own weighs but a metallic Honor 7 looks more premium to the Nexus 5X.

Huawei Honor 7 weighs 156 grams and on the other side, Nexus 5X weighs only 136 grams. Certainly, the lack of metal and a smaller battery size makes the nexus more portable and lightweight mobile.

Honor 7 has a thickness of 8.5 mm and Nexus 5X has a thickness of 7.9 mm. Both the smartphones offer Fingerprint Scanner on the rear side beneath the rear camera.

Performance

Huawei Honor 7 is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 935 Octa-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz whereas Nexus 5X comes with the Snapdragon 808 processor (Hexa-Core) clocked at 1.8 GHz.

Honor 7 comes with  3 GB RAM while the Google Nexus 5X has just 2 GB of RAM. Google should have included at least 3 GB Ram for Nexus 5X, even the Google Nexus 5 which was released in 2013 had 2 GB RAM.

Though the lack of additional Ram is more or less compensated by the faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 vs the Kirin 935.  As per the latest Antutu benchmark Snapdragon 808 scores 68.5k while the Kirin 935 scores 55.6K on the benchmark.

Storage

Both the mobiles have internal memory of 16 GB. But the Honor 7 offers additional storage support of 128 GB micro- SD card the Google Nexus 5X has no option for additional storage support, which can be a deal breaker for some of the buyers.

Camera

Huawei Honor 7 has a 20 MP Rear camera with LED flash and Sony IMX230 sensor. It also has 8 MP front camera for taking selfies with front LED flash.  The front Led flash is something not very common and is an added advantage if you love to take selfies.

Nexus 5X comes with 12.3 MP with Dual tone LED Flash and Laser Autofocus. For selfies, it has 5 MP front camera. The rear camera on the Google Nexus 5X is really good and comes with great google optimizations to ensure best picture clarity.

On the camera front, we call it a tie, Honor 7 excels in front camera and Nexus 5X has a great rear camera.

Operating System

Huawei Honor 7 runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, Emotion UI 3.1. But the good news is that Android 6.0 Marshmallow update is available now for the Honor 7. The Google Nexus 5X was one of the first mobiles to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. And you can also expect the Android N rolling out for the Nexus 5X much earlier than the Honor 7.

Connectivity

Honor 7 is a single sim smartphone with support for 4G LTE. While Google Nexus 5X is also a single Sim 4G mobile. But one advantage in Nexus 5X is it has USB Type C port.

Battery Life

The Huawei Honor 7 comes with a decent battery capacity of 3100 mAh and the Google Nexus 5X has 2700 mAh battery capacity. Huawei Honor 7 has 12% more battery capacity compared to the Google Nexus 5X, though both the smartphones can easily sail through the day with moderate to heavy usage.

Verdict

Both the smartphones have shortcomings and are great in their own ways. Huawei Honor 7 distinguish itself with good battery life, expandable storage and premium metallic looks, front camera with flash support. On the other hand, we have the Google Nexus 5X which offers best-optimized stock Android experience, regular & faster Android updates, fast processor and good Rear Camera.

It is difficult to pick a clear winner in this case, you would certainly go with the Honor 7 if you love to take selfies and want large storage. On the other hand, if you are tech enthusiast want to get the latest updates before the world and love the stock Android experience you are better suited for the Nexus device.

If you ask me which one would I buy, I would go with the Google Nexus 5X as it suits my needs more.
