New Asus Zenfone 5 Series Launch, Specs, Details
Asus has launched 4 new phones in the new Zenfone 5 (ZE620KL) series at the MWC 2018. The Zenfone 5, 5Z (premium Flagship) and Zenfone 5 Lite and the long battery Zenfone Max M1 are the new devices from the Taiwanese technology giant.
All these mobiles are likely to launch in India in next 1-2 months, however, the Flagship Zenfone 5Z may launch a little later due to the Snapdragon 845 supply limitations. The new Asus Zenfone 5/5Z (2018) looks exactly like the iPhone X whereas the Lite and M1 models have a different design.
The design for the new Zenfone is a spitting image of the iPhone X and it comes with the infamous notch at the top of the display. The company even shared that the size of the notch is smaller than the iPhone X.
At the MWC, Marcel Campos, Global head of marketing at Asus said, “but we cannot get away from what users want. You have to follow the trends.”
In fact, the worst thing about the iPhone X is the notch and lot of Android manufacturers are going to copy the design blatantly this year. Even the upcoming Oneplus 6 images also transpire a similar design.
Even the new Zenfone series looks unarguably similar to the Apple flagship from behind, with a similar vertical camera design and a glass back cover. However, there is still a fingerprint scanner that is available at the back of the new Android phones from Asus.
Too Much AI
Also, Asus claimed that the phones use extensive use of AI. The New Zenfone has AI Camera, AI performance, AI Battery Charging, AI Call experience and AI facial unlocking. That is too much of AI for any phone ever built even by Google. On a serious note, the company just happen to overuse the term “AI”, probably in the excitement of new launches.
Let’s get started with the details about the new Zenfone 5 (2018).
Asus Zenfone 5 (2018)
Aforementioned, the design is a replica of the iPhone X and probably, it is not a bad thing to have a beautiful bezel-free design on a mid-range Android phone. Notably, Asus has not shared the prices of any of these phones so far, and by the recent experience, the brand is not launching cheaper phones.
In fact, they are not competing with Xiaomi in India with aggressive pricing. To recall, Xiaomi also launched the “Poor man’s iPhone X” (Redmi Note 5 Pro) couple of days back in India.
Design and Display
The new Zenfone 5 comes with an incredible 90% screen to body ratio with a 6.2 inches FHD+ (2246*1080) pixels display. It comes with an unusual 19:9 aspect ratio, most bezel-less phones have 18:9 aspect ratio. The 19:9 aspect ratio makes it less broad in comparison to other phones.
Asus also explained that the 19:9 aspect ratio prevents the notch from interfering while watching videos in the 18:9 aspect ratio.
The phone uses an IPS LCD display panel with 95.4% color gamut and even comes with 2.5D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. There are some nifty features like display auto color temperature correction based on ambient conditions. Secondly, the smart stay that keeps the screen on, when you are looking at it.
The phone is sleek and measures 7.85mm and weighs 155 grams.
Overall the design is stunning and undoubtedly premium. Buy the new Asus phone and just add a cover, most people are going to think that you have bought the absurdly expensive iPhone.
The Dual cameras are now ubiquitous and the new Asus phone also comes with Dual 12 MP rear cameras. The camera uses the Sony IMX363 lens and has 1.4-micron pixel size and comes with a f/1.8 aperture for better low light imaging. For better video quality and stability there is 3 Axis optical image stabilization and 4k video support.
Additionally, the camera comes with the 6P lens, Portrait Mode, HDR, Scene detection and PDAF. Also, the company is trying its hand on the Apple Animoji equivalent called as ZeniMoji (Live Emoji).
Further, the front camera comes with an 8 Megapixel single lens camera 84-degree wide angle lens. There are features like AI beautification, Selfie panorama, and GIF animation etc to enhance your selfie shots.
Powering the Zenfone 5 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Octa-Core processor (also used in the Redmi Note 5 Pro) and the Adreno 509 GPU. The phone comes with 4 GB RAM / 6 GB Ram version with 64 GB internal storage that is expandable up to 2 TB using the hybrid micro-sd card.
Another highlight, is the new Asus Zen UI 5.0 and the Android Oreo 8.0, making the software experience better. The revamped Zen UI looks more like iOS with some similar icon designs but still have the Android soul.
The fast processor and latest Google OS makes the Zenfone 5 blazing fast.
Apart from the fingerprint scanner that is available at the back, you can also use the face unlock technology. You can set up your face id like you do for the fingerprint scanner, and when you look at the device it unlocks.
Furthermore, the battery life is also going to be decent as it comes with a 3300 mAH capacity battery and even supports Fast Charging. The phone comes with modern connectivity options like the USB Type C port and NFC support.
However, Asus has still kept the 3.5mm headphone jack alive in these next-Gen phones. For Audiophiles, there are 5 magnet Dual speakers with AMP for a better sound experience. Also, Asus boasts of AI improved call quality using the noise canceling microphones and even comes with an Audio wizard for sound presets. Yup, there is too much AI.
So that’s about the new Zenfone 5 let’s check what is different in the Znefone 5Z.
The Asus Zenfone 5Z
The Asus Zenfone 5Z comes with a similar design, battery capacity, display, and cameras as the Zenfone 5. However, since it is the flagship phone it comes with the fastest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, Adreno 630 GPU.
Additionally, you will be able to buy the Zenfone 5Z with a maximum internal storage capacity of 256 Gigabytes and with 8 GB RAM. There are no other changes in comparison to the Zenfone 5.
Also, Asus announced the price for the Zenfone 5Z as 479 Euro or Rs. 38,000 that is not too high. Maybe the company wants to pitch the phone as a rival to the upcoming Oneplus 6 or Mi 7 in the sub 40k price range.
Asus has previously launched Flagship phones like Zenfone AR and Zenfone Deluxe with over 50k price and that has not worked well for the company. Perhaps, the idea of a more affordable flagship may help the company improve the market presence.
Asus Zenfone Lite and Zenfone Max M1
The Asus Zenfone 5 Lite is another phone that is launched by the company. However, it is significantly different in comparison to the Zenfone 5. The design and the specs are entirely different and you can read about it here.
You can read more about the Asus Zenfone Max M1, the long battery phone here in this dedicated post. Samsung has also launched the new Samsung S9 and S9 plus at the MWC 2018, can read more about it here.
