Much water has flowed under the bridge since we last talked about iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the upcoming 2016 flagships from Apple. The earlier article on iPhone 7 leaks can be found here.
As the expected launch of iPhone flagships in September approaches, the leaks are getting thick and fast despite the legendary secrecy that surrounds the Apple products, we’re getting more and more sneak peeks into what this year holds for us. The iPhone launch routine has fallen into a pattern, with Apple following the tick-tock strategy of introducing major physical changes in one year and under the hood improvements in the next.
Going by this methodology, we should be expecting physical changes such as design, etc this year. We are also still predicting as earlier, the curved metallic design cues of the existing iPhone 6s would persist, and the leaks re-affirm that the physical changes in design are going to be minimal. This would indicate a departure from practice but there is a strong likely reason behind this move. Next year iPhone will be celebrating its 10 years and Apple is holding back big changes in design and technology for its 2017 edition, which in another departure from practice are likely to be labeled as iPhone 8 instead of iPhones 7s to highlight the significance of iPhone’s 10 years.
Here’s what we know about the 2016 iPhones so far.
There might be three models announced this year instead of expected two. Giving company to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be a new rumored variant that is likely to be called iPhone 7 Pro. Along with 4 inch iPhone SE released earlier this year, the predicted scenario translates into 4 current iPhone models concurrently in the market, which is huge compared to maximum of 2 flagships seen till last year.
The iPhone 7 will keep the screen dimension of 4.7 inch from iPhone 6s while the larger Plus and Pro siblings will offer 5.5 inch displays same as currently found on iPhone 6s Plus. The display resolution for iPhone 7 is going to remain same as the iPhone 6s at 750×1334 pixels which decodes to a pixel density of approx. 326 PPI.
The resolution of iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 Pro however may get a bump up from the existing full HD resolution of 1080×1920 pixels which decodes to a pixel density of approx. 401 PPI.
The displays are unlikely to switch from LCD to OLED this year as the LCDs employed by iPhones are already the best in the industry. However LG Display and Samsung Display are seen to be preparing to supply large amount of OLED panels to Apple.
The new OLED displays will be thinner and will allow to Apple to catch up on the display quality where they are seen to be missing out in recent years. If they don’t debut in iPhone 7 then they will almost certainly make appearance next year with the 10th anniversary iPhone models.
We are still holding on to our prediction that the use of new composite compounds which will lead to elimination of the ugly antenna bands which are visible on the top and bottom of the back side of iPhones. The leaks show that the new iPhone 7 and its siblings lack the antenna bands. However a closer look at leaked images does reveal the bands on top and bottom of edges only.
The use of new materials, design changes and one major change related to headphones, which we’ll cover later, are likely to cut the thickness of the iPhones. The current devices are iPhone 6s and iPhones 6s Plus are 7.1mm and 7.3mm thick and it’s likely the design obsessed Apple is aiming to cut the thickness by as much as hefty 1mm.
Latest iPhone 7 Leaks and Details 19 July 2016 – The major change related to Earphones we talked about just a little earlier refers to nothing less than a paradigm shift for headphones, the end of the ubiquitous 3.5mm audio jack. The standard audio jacks that we see everywhere from walkmans of yore to the smartphones and audio systems of today, might be well be on their way out for good from iPhones. However won’t be the first to do this as Chinese mobile manufacturers have already started rolling out models without the standard audio jack.
The audio interface on iPhone 7 family will be through the existing lightning port that is used to charge the iPhones and transfer data. So that will leave you with few inconvenient options, buy new headphones compatible with the lightning port, buy a likely overpriced converter that allows to connect your legacy 3.5mm jack to the lightning port or switch to wireless Bluetooth headphones. Leaked images appearing on Weibo show the new EarPods with exact same design and same remote as existing EarPods but with new lightning interface.
The connector seems rather large compared to the connector on the current lightning cable which suggests it contains electronics, probably a chip for authentication to bar unauthorized accessories.
Latest iPhone 7 Leaks and Details 19 July 2016 – The iPhone 7 family will get the new A10 processor likely to be produced by current suppliers TSMC and Samsung Electronics. It’s rumored that TSMC might become the sole supplier of A10 chips to Apple as Apple seeks to distance itself from Samsung. While the current A9 processor made by Samsung is manufactured on a 14nm FinFET process, compared to 16nm FinFET of TSMC resulting in larger chips, the new A10 processor is likely to be manufactured by TSMC using 10-12nm FinFET processes.
Latest iPhone 7 Leaks and Details 18 July 2016 – The main cameras on the iPhone 7 family will remain 12 MP snappers but will get other upgrades. The leaked images show that the iPhone 7 has a camera that’s substantially bigger than the camera on iPhone 6s.
The camera still protrudes outwards in a substantial bulge. The iPhone 7 Plus on the other hand is going to get a bigger camera upgrade. The bigger iPhone device is seen with a 2 lens setup, which sadly also protrudes outwards. The 2 lenses might allow capturing of images with different focal lengths that would allow users to pan the focus on the images after capturing them. Also the 2 lenses would help capture greater details especially in low light conditions.
The iPhone 7 devices will ship with iOS 10. The public beta version has already been released and packs exciting improvements. The changes in iOS 10 are many and we would not be able to do it justice here. We’d be covering iOS 10 in detail in another article.
New iPhones are likely to support wireless charging since the lightning port is going to be hogged by the headphones now. Along with wireless charging, quick charging is also likely to come to iPhone to enable the devices to charge quicker.
The slimmer body without the big audio jack will offer better water and dust resistance. It’s also likely that iPhone might finally adhere to the IP68 certification which means the new devices will be protected against dust and survive prolonged immersion under water.
The new models will discard the 16 GB storage capacity and start with 32GB for entry level base versions. The iPhone 7 is likely to support 32GB, 64GB and 256GB. The iPhone 7 Plus will come in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities. iPhone 7 is likely going to come with 2GB RAM while iPhone 7 Plus will probably have 4GB RAM.
Latest iPhone 7 Leaks and Details 18 July 2016 – The likely pricing for iPhone family has been leaked on Chinese website Weibo. The iPhone 7’s three variants of 32GB, 64GB & 256GB are to be priced CNY 5,288, CNY 6,088 & CNY 7,088. These prices roughly translate to Rs 53,000, Rs 61,000 and Rs 71,000.
The iPhone7 Plus’s variants of 32GB, 128GB & 256GB variants will be priced at CNY 6,088, CNY 6,888 & CNY 7,888 respectively. These prices roughly translate to Rs 61,000, Rs 69,000 and Rs 79,000.
The iPhone7 Pro’s variants of 32GB, 128GB & 256GB will be priced CNY 7,088, CNY 7,888 & CNY 8,888. These prices roughly translate to Rs 71,000, Rs 79,000 and Rs 89,000.
Latest iPhone 7 Leaks and Details 18 July 2016 – Another interesting thing seen in leaked images is the presence of 3 dots on the lower back of the bigger iPhone which look just like the Smart Connector seen on the iPad Pro. This would indicate that iPhone could be used with the Smart Connector accessories such as the keyboards.
More updates to follow as we get more updates on the upcoming Apple’s keynote event.
