MacBook Pro 2016

The new MacBook Pro lineup for 2016 consists of three models in 15” and 13” sizes. The three new models are not available in India yet but should be available in a couple of weeks.

The 13” size has two variants, one with the Touch Bar & Touch ID while the other one is more like the earlier MacBook Pro models.

The model without the Touch Bar seems to be aimed at people upgrading from MacBook Air since the Air model did not get a refresh and is unlikely to get one now that MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter, which were the USPs of the Air model.

The models with Touch Bar have four Thunderbolt 3 ports which have the same interface as an USB C type port while the model without Touch Bar has two of these ports. This means you can charge the using any of these ports and it signals the demise of the much loved MagSafe charging port. Thankfully all the models carry the 3.5 mm headphone jack!

The MacBook Pro 15” has a 15.4” LED-backlight Retina display. It has a choice of three processors, Intel i7 2.6 GHz quad core, Intel i7 2.7 GHz quad core or Intel i7 2.9 GHz quad core processor. The battery life has been improved to 10 hours from previous years model’s 9 hours of backup. The storage is SSD with capacities up to 2 TB.

The model features a large Force Touch trackpad and the new Touch Bar which features the contextual dynamic keys replacing the static Function keys which are seldom used.

The model also features Touch ID which can be used to login with a fingerprint and also make payments through Apple Pay. The model weighs 1.83 Kg. The MRP starts from an astronomical Rs.205,900.

Both the MacBook Pro 13” models have 13.3” LED-backlight Retina display. The Touch Bar model is powered by a choice of three processors, Intel i5 2.9 GHz dual core, Intel i5 3.1 GHz dual core or Intel i7 3.3 GHz dual core processor.

The non-Touch Bar variant is powered by either Intel i5 2.0 Ghz dual core or Intel i7 2.4 GHz dual core processor. Both models are rated to give a battery backup of 10 hours. Both have SSD storage with capacities up to 1 TB. Both have a large Force Touch enabled trackpad and weigh 1.37 Kg.

The Touch Bar model starts with an MRP of Rs.155,900 while the other model starts with an MRP of Rs.129,900.

Cheapest MacBook – MacBook Air

The MacBook Air 13” model is now the cheapest and also the oldest out of the entire MacBook portfolio. The MacBook Air has a 13.3” LED-backlight display and this is the only model with a non-Retina screen. The machine is powered by either an Intel i5 1.6 GHz dual core processor or an Intel i7 2.2 GHz dual core processor.

The Air model has the longest battery backup at 12 hours of usage. The storage is SSD with capacities up to 512 GB. This is now the only model which carries a multi-touch trackpad that is not Force Touch enabled. The model weighs 1.35 Kg and has an MRP of Rs.80,900.

MacBook

The MacBook 12” model had got a refresh in April 2016 and therefore as expected there were no updates announced for the second generation MacBook. The MacBook is the smallest and lightest of the MacBook family making it amongst the most portable and powerful machines.

The MacBook comes with a 12” LED-backlit Retina display. There is a choice of three processors, Intel Core m3 1.1 GHz dual core, Intel Core m5 1.2 GHz dual core or Intel Core m7 1.3 GHz dual core processor. The battery lasts a commendable 10 hours. The storage is SSD with capacities up to 512 GB. The model features a Force Touch trackpad and weighs just 0.92 Kg. The MRP starts from Rs.112,900.

Older MacBook Pro 13 & 15

The last year’s MacBook Pro models are still available and make a good value proposition considering the prices of this year’s models.

The 15” MacBook Pro from last year has a 15.4” LED-backlight Retina display. It has a choice of three processors, Intel Core i7 2.2 GHz quad core, Intel Core i7 2.5 GHz quad core or Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz quad core processor.

The battery is rated to last for 9 hours, least among the entire range of MacBooks. The storage is SSD with capacities up to 1 TB. The model features a Force Touch trackpad and weighs hefty 2.04 Kg making heaviest of the lot. The MRP starts from Rs.162,900.

The 13” MacBook Pro from last year is now the cheapest Pro model. The smaller of the two has a 13.3” LED-backlight Retina display. It has a choice of three processors, Intel Core i5 2.7 GHz dual core, Intel Core i5 2.9 GHz dual core or Intel Core i7 3.1 GHz dual core processor. The battery is rated to last for 10 hours. The storage is SSD with capacities up to 1 TB. The model features a Force Touch trackpad and weighs 1.58 Kg. The MRP starts from Rs.106,900.

iMAC,  MacPro & Mac Mini

Besides the MacBook lineup there are three iMacs, two in 21.5” size with MRPs of Rs.123,900 & Rs.91,900 while the 27” model has an MRP of Rs.148,900.

Then there is the Mac Mini with MRP of Rs.40,900 and the venerable Mac Pro with astronomical MRP of Rs.249,900.

So which one is the right MacBook for you? It really depends on your processing requirements, portability and your budget to do a thorough research before you buy anything as these are pricey decisions.

Apple may not be able to boost the sales numbers from these new MacBook but definitely Apple is going to increase the profit margins with the New line of MacBook Pro.
