Lenovo has unveiled a new smartphone which is priced at $290 or INR 18,000. The new Lenovo Smartphone is known as Lenovo K80 and boasts of 4 GB RAM and Android Lollipop. It is world’s second smartphone which will have 4 GB RAM, Asus Zenphone 2 is the first one.
The design is similar to some of the older generation of Lenovo smartphones. Rear camera is located at the middle of the smartphone above the Dual Led Flash. The Lenovo and Intel inside Logo is displayed at the back. It is interesting to see the Intel Logo on a smartphone. The smartphone will be available in Black, silver, and red color variants.
Taiwanese giant, Asus last week unveiled 4 new smartphones and out of them, 2 higher models has, 4 GB ram capacity. The smartphones are listed now on Flipkart and you can read more about the Asus Zenphone 2 models here.
The Lenovo P80 is an answer to the Zenphone 2 by the Chinese Aggressor. The K80 has a massive 4000 mAH massive battery capacity compared to 3000 mAh battery of Zenphone 2 .
The new Lenovo smartphone runs on the Intel Quad Core Processor which supports 4 GB ram. The 64 Bit – 1.8 GHz, Intel Atom Z3560, Quad Core is the same processor which powers the mid-range Asus Zenphone 2. The Smartphone has Full HD – 1920*1080P display with a 5.5 inch screen size and a pixel density of 401.
Why would anyone need 4 GB Ram? I am not sure why you or anyone need to have 4 GB RAM to run current generation of smartphones and OS. Android Lollipop is not a RAM hog, it uses less than 1 gigs of Ram and even with 2 GB ram smartphone with good optimization works fast and fluid. It is more of specs war between Chinese and rest of the world. I am still pretty happy with 2 Gb Ram and snapdragon 800 on a Google Nexus 5.
For modern OS 1 GB Ram can be less but 2-3 GB is more than enough to do any level of multi-tasking, 4 GB may be needed in future.
The smartphone offers 4G LTE, 3G/2G, Wifi & bluetooth connectivity. Lenovo has also added a 64 GB internal storage to the smartphone.
The Rear camera on the smartphone is 13 MP, front camera details are not known for K80 so far.
It is expected to go on sale in China on 30-April-2015, then we will get more details and feedback on the smartphone. The Indian launch date for K80 is not known but we can expect it to go on sale at end of May 2015.
A small interesting story on Lenovo and Motorola India…..
Lenovo’s Predicament in Indian Market
Lenovo after the acquisition of Motorola from Google has become very aggressive in the mobile domain, while the earlier focus was more on the Laptop and PC market, now focus is on the mobile business. Lenovo at one point of time sold the Lenovo mobile business to the parent holding company for $100 million and later bought it back for $ 200 Million.
In last few years, Lenovo realized that the market is shifting to mobile devices and tablets and smartphones will cannibalize , PC and laptop sales. The acquisition of Motorola helped them gain technical know-how; to develop superior smartphones, faster than competition.
In February 2014 Motorola got launched in the Indian market with Moto G and now has share of 5% in Indian mobile market. Lenovo on the other hand has 2.5-3% market share. The company has a reverse situation in China where Lenovo Brand has a much larger share than Motorola.
It is surprising to note that Japan does not have either Lenovo or Motorola smartphones. It is very difficult for Lenovo and Motorola to co-exist in the Indian market as both companies compete against each other. Branding budget and internal rivalries can cause serious headaches for the leaders. What to sell in the market, and how aggressive to go with each brand, partnership with online retailers like Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal are crucial decisions to be taken with utmost care.
It will be interesting to see the Lenovo Strategy to expand both the brands in the Indian market in 2015-16.
