Before we get into the details for the Lenovo S5 Pro and the Lenovo Z5, let’s understand why Lenovo is doing badly in India.

Why Lenovo is Failing in India?

Lenovo has been on the back foot for almost a year in India and we have not seen any aggressive launches by the company in the past 12 months. Last impressive launches were the K8 Series (K8 Note and K8 Plus) after that Lenovo and Motorola (owned by Lenovo) both the brands are struggling to keep up with the rivals.

On the other hand, Xiaomi has launched several new phones including the POCO sub-brand to strengthen the market share. Oppo has also introduced the RealME sub-brand in India to have an aggressively priced product portfolio for the sub 20k price.

Somehow both Lenovo and Motorola have lost their way in the last 12 months. Motorola launched a couple of overpriced products like the Moto G6 and G6 Plus in the market but they failed to attract budget-conscious buyers.

Recently, we have seen some change in strategy for Motorola with the launch of Motorola One Power which offers good value for money. Even Lenovo seems to be waking up from a long sleep with the launch of K9 and A5.

However, there are a lot of new products required if they want to gain some share in the mobile market.

Contrastingly, the company has some good launches in the homeland China, such as the recent Lenovo S5 Pro and the Lenovo Z5 (launched in June 2018). Lenovo desperately needs to launch such products in the Indian market to rival the Chinese counterparts.

Lenovo S5 Pro was launched on 18th October in China and comes with promising specs and an affordable price tag. Let’s have a look at the new Lenovo phones.

Lenovo S5 PRO

The Lenovo S5 Pro looks a lot like the Huawei Honor play and comes with a metallic unibody design. At the front, there is a notch which houses an infra-red supported face unlocking sensor similar to the Xiaomi’s Poco F1.

The overall design looks impressive, and the device boasts of a 6.2 Inch IPS LCD Display that comes with an FHD+ (2246*1080) pixels panel with 18.7:9 aspect ratio and a 113% sRGB color gamut.

Key Specs and Details – Lenovo S5 PRO

Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Processor that comes with the Adreno 509 GPU to take care of gaming needs. Also, to ensure that the phone has a smooth performance it comes with the latest Android Oreo 8.1 Os and there is ZUI 5.0 from Lenovo.

Another highlight of the device is the Dual Rear camera setup. It comprises of a primary 20 MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 12 MP lens with f/2.6 aperture. If that’s not enough the Lenovo S5 PRO even offers dual front cameras.

There is a 20 MP primary sensor at the front along with an 8 MP secondary sensor to take selfies. What’s more, the camera comes with AI chops to take better images and even has a better portrait mode, and 2X Optical Zoom.

Furthermore, it comes with 3500 mAH capacity battery and even gets a 15 Watts turbocharger to ensure fast charging. There is a USB Type C Port, 3.5 mm headphone jack and expandable storage option.

The S5 Pro costs approximately Rs. 13,000 in China and comes with 6 GB Ram and 64 GB internal storage. Also, Lenovo will launch a 128 GB storage version with 6 GB Ram, the price for which is undisclosed.

The phone will go on sale in China starting 23rd October and will be available in Blue, Black, and Gold color options.

The price and specs look great for the S5 Pro and we wonder if the brand will consider launching this beast in the Indian market any time soon.

Nevertheless, they have failed to launch the Lenovo Z5 in India, which looks incredibly stunning with the two tone back panel, similar to the Huawei P20 Pro.

Lenovo Z5 Launches in China But With a Notch Instead of Truely Bezel-Free Display

5th-June-2018 – Lenovo has finally taken the wraps off the highly anticipated phone from the brand, and it comes with a notch. There were several rumors in the past weeks that alleged a true bezel-less phone without any notch or bezels but now the reality has unfolded and we have the Lenovo Z5 in the flesh with a notch at the top.

Lenovo shared several teaser images that showcased a phone without a notch with an all screen display. There was a lot of media hype, but now it seems the company was trying this to just create the buzz around the new phone.

Lenovo Z5

Unfortunately, this is sad that Lenovo has resorted to such tactics to create the media hype. Now the Lenovo fans waiting for a truly bezel-less phone will be highly disappointed with the dubious tactics the company has used.

Notably, it looks like a spitting image of the iPhone X, though comes with a smaller notch like several other Android phones. Also, there is a small chin at the bottom, contrary to the early leaked images that showcased a phone without any bottom bezels.

Key Specs and Details Lenovo Z5

For starters, the new Lenovo Z5 comes with a 6.2 Inch display that has 19:9 aspect ratio and offers an FHD+ (2246*1080 pixels) resolution screen. Additionally, there is 2.5D curved glass as well as Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

Moreover, the display comes with the DCPI-3 color gamut and has a maximum brightness of 700 nits which is impressive for this budget phone.

However, Lenovo claims that the bezels on the new Z5 are much thinner in comparison to both the iPhone X and the newly launched Xiaomi Mi8.

Notably, the Lenovo Z5 comes with a 90% screen to body ratio which makes it one of the most stylish phones out there. However, it was touted that the phone will come with a 95% screen-to-body ratio which is not true.

Moreover, it comes with  Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, 8 Core processor along with the Adreno 508 GPU which offers decent gaming and multi-tasking performance.

For photography, it comes with a Dual 16+8 Megapixel rear cameras with f/2.0 aperture and AI features to improve the images. Also, the camera is capable of clicking better portrait shots with background blur using the AI and there is also an AI night mode to reduce the grain in the night shots.

Additionally, the rear camera is also capable of recording 4K videos at 30 FPS.

For selfies, there is an 8 Megapixel camera at the front that can click decent pictures.

The phone boots on the latest Android Oreo 8.1 OS and comes with the Lenovo ZUI 4.0 custom skin on top of it.

Furthermore, there is a 3300 mAH capacity battery that can last all day long. Also, the Lenovo Vice President teased that the phone will come with a battery that offers 45 days of standby time and there were speculations that it may house a much larger battery.

Besides, it comes with an 18 Watt fast charger that offers fast charging support.

Price and Availability – China and India

Lastly, the Lenovo Z5 is a very affordable phone with a price tag of Rs. 14,000 or 1299 Yuan for the 6 GB ram and 64 GB internal storage version. The 128 GB storage / 6 GB ram model costs 1799 Yuan or Rs. 19500.

The phone will up for grabs in China starting 12th June 2018 and comes in Black, Blue, and Aurora color options.

It is not clear at the moment if the company will launch it in India anytime soon. But we expect Lenovo to bring the Z5 to India as it is quite long that brand has launched anything new in the country.

Overall, the Z5 seems like an excellent budget mobile from the Chinese company but the leaks and hype were surreal and misleading, to say the least.

All said and done, I think the Lenovo Z5 is a stunning phone as far as the looks are concerned. Especially the purple and blue color (Aurora) version that looks like the absurdly expensive Huawei Honor P20 PRO and is undoubtedly worth grabbing.

However, the sister concern Motorola has launched the new Moto G6 series in India, we are still waiting for Lenovo to introduce the new 19:9 phones in the market.
