Lets dive into what LG G6 offers and is it worth your money.
Design and Display
The display is curved but not like what we have seen on the Samsung S7 edge, the LG G6 display has curved edges, a first for any phone. The G6 comes with an unusual Display aspect ratio (18:9). The LG G6 comes with a large 5.7-inch Quad HD+ (2,880 x 1,440 resolution) FullVision display, and for the first time ever in a mobile has an unusual 18:9 screen aspect ratio.
Lg said in the press conference that the 18:9 display offers a more immersive experience for watching videos and paying games. Though I think with this unusual display resolution we may have some scaling issues with apps which are designed keeping 16:9 aspect ration in mind. The LG G6 display comes with HDR 10 support which offers better content experience.
The rounded display also has an advantage in case of a drop the chances of round edge screen getting broken is low on a bezel-less display, like the G6.
The front side of the G6 does not have any buttons, the screen occupies most of the space with 80% + screen to body ratio. LG says they designed the phone to offer customers a large display which they can use with One hand. The company claims that the G6 comes with a 5.7 inch display panel in a body which is ideally suited to fit a 5.2 inch display.
Also, LG said they have made one of the most ergonomic and easy to hold and use – ergonomics research teams led by Dr. Andris Freivalds at Pennsylvania State University and Dr. Ji Yong-gu at Yonsei University tested the LG G6 and found it to be one of the easiest devices to use.
The mobile comes with a minimalistic design which offers plenty of screen space and there is metallic back with the Dual rear camera. The back is slightly curved at the edges to make the device more easy to hold and less slippery.
The brushed metal back looks premium and the phone will come in 3 colors – Astro Black / Ice Platinum / Mystic White. The LG G6 is not very heavy for a 5.7 inch display device and weighs 163 grams, nor is very thick or thin – measures at 7.9 mm in thickness.
Noticeably, the soft matte finish at the back is perfectly flat and there is no camera bump. Below the Dual rear camera, there is a fingerprint scanner for enhanced security of the LG G6.
As expected and rumored LG G6 misses on the next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Chipset which will come with the Samsung S8. The G6 is powered by the current fastest Snapdragon 821 Processor clocked at 2.4 GHz along with the Adreno 530 GPU. Mobiles like Google Pixel and the much cheaper OnePlus 3T also come with the same chipset. It could be a deal breaker for many enthusiasts and performance junkies.
LG has also not added 6 GB of Ram which was expected of them, they have 4 GB of Ram with the LG G6. The LG G6 comes in 2 storage options with 32 GB and 64 GB storage and option to expand the device storage using a Micro-SD card upto 2 TB.
The camera is the highlight of the device apart from the unusual display. There is Dual rear camera both with 13 Megapixel resolution. The first camera comes with a f/2.4 aperture lens and has 125-degree wide angle view to capture the breadth of the image.
The second camera in the setup has a more standard f/1.8 aperture with 71-degree wide angle lens. Both the camera working together along with the image signal processor to take great shots. For recording stable videos the camera comes with Optical Images Stabilization 2.0.
Moreover, LG G6 comes with the wide angle lens, it can click panoramic shots which other smartphones cannot.
At the front, there is a 5 Mega Pixel front facing selfie camera which comes with f /2.2 aperture lens.
Software and Connectivity, Water and Dustproof
The LG G6 comes with the Android Nougat 7.0 along with the LG UX 6.0. The other key highlight of the G6 is the presence of Google Assistant on the LG G6, it is the first non pixel phone to get the Google Assistant support.
Additionally, The LG UX is a heavy skin and makes the user experience different when compared to the stock Android. The LG G6 comes with 4G LTE as well as VOLTE support and has LTE A3 bands support.
The phone also has the USB Type C port for faster data transfer and fast charging. The Lg G6 comes with Water and Dust resistant with IP 68 rating which makes it comparable to the Samsung S7 edge or the Note 7.
Also, LG said they have sealed the battery in the G6 to make the device Water and Dustproof.
Battery And Sound
Last but not the least the 5.7-inch display needs a lot of power which is supplied by the non-removable 3300 mAH capacity battery. Which LG says in a cheeky way is quite safe and non-explosive and has been thoroughly tested by the company.
The G6 can charge to 100% in about 1:30 minutes which is quite impressive. The sound was great with the LG V20 and the tradition continues with the LG G6 – it comes with a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC.
Overall, there are some really positive things to talk about the LG G6 and there are some low points like not able to add the Snapdragon 835 and 6 GB RAM. If you are not too hung up on the Samsung S8 and S8 Plus and also the effective price for the LG G6 comes to be 42,000 after the discount it is the best deal in the 40 to 45K budget.
If you can spend more than the Samsung S8 is a cool product to own. But both the phones are fantastic and you won’t regret buying any of these.
Here are the key specifications for the LG G6, do share with me in comments below – what do you think about the LG G6. LGG has also launched the new LG V30 flagship phone with a Dual rear camera.
Lastly, that’s all we know about the new LG G6 and we are also pretty excited about the upcoming LG V30 which boasts of a better rear camera even when compared to the LG G6.
