The Selfie Phone Meitu M4 Review
We got one of the unique looking smartphone made by a Chinese company known as Meitu. Yes, it sounds quite similar to Meizu but it is a different brand that is available in China, Hong Kong, and the US.
The mobile is available for $345 on Amazon.com and is yet not available in India. We contacted Meitu about their plans to launch the device in India. However, they are keeping it clandestine.
In future, they may launch the brand in the Indian market.
Let’s talk about the new phone from the brand. For starters, it is a selfie smartphone that comes with the 13-megapixel front camera and even there is a 13 MP rear camera.
Moreover, it looks different in comparison to any other device I have ever used. Some may call the shape too uncanny and others may totally like it and accept it as a premium device.
Unboxing – Meitu M4
It comes with the most impressive packaging I have ever seen with a smartphone. The box is quite large and looks like a premium cookie box from China.
Inside the Box :
- Charger Adapter
- USB Cable
- SimEjector tool
- 2 Screen guard
- User Manual
On the first glance, the design looks primitive with large bezels and lot of space at the top and bottom of the screen. But if you use it for a couple of days there are subtle things which make it feel comfortable in hand and looks are also quite distinguished from normal mobiles with a very large curve at the top and bottom.
The top side and the bottom of the device have got metal edges which even add to distinctive looks. The bezels at the top of the display and even at the bottom are quite wide that takes a lot of space and make the screen to body ratio too low on this mobile.
I think it is more of a personal taste some people may like the design and some may totally rubbish it. But all said it does look different from other smartphones.
Further, it comes with IPS LCD display with a 4.7-inch screen. The resolution on the screen is HD (1280*720) pixels and the PPI is 326. The display has good color reproduction and doesn’t look saturated or washed out. Moreover, reading the text and watching videos on the display is a good experience.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 is very responsive and offers good performance. Additionally, it has 2 GB of Ram which again handles the Android KitKat and Meitu’s custom UI MeiOS 2 quite well. In fact, while opening apps and camera application the smartphone worked smoothly there was no issue in terms of switching from 1 App to other and considering the good clock rate of 1.7 GHz on the processor it is good for all basic tasks.
We played some of the basic games on the smartphone like CandyCrush and subway surfer which ran smoothly without any hiccups.
Meitu M4 Review – The front 13 Megapixel camera is the highlight of this smartphone and offers decent performance in well-lit conditions and also is quite reasonable when you click photos indoor or in low light. The pictures are quite clear when taken from the front camera with a decent level of details.
Selfie from Front Camera :
The rear camera is also a 13 Megapixel shooter and can take good images in well-lit conditions, Images in the low lit or artificial lit areas can become grainy. The Auto-focus also is not the slowest I have seen but also is not very fast.
Some Sample Photos from Rear Camera :
OS and User Experience
It runs on the Android KitKat 4.4.2 OS and has a custom skin loaded on top of it. The custom UI from Meitu is known as the MeiOS 2 that comes with nifty features like taking quick screenshots. Additionally, it has a host of camera apps by Meitu to augment photography.
There is a very cool feature which allows you to change the wallpaper with one single click on the Wallpaper change icon. Also, there are different themes and dialer tones especially created for young users, that will appeal to them.
The battery Life of the device is mediocre not too great. I am able to use the smartphone until evening with a good amount of usage and the 2150 mAH battery capacity worked for more hours than I was expecting it.
Furthermore, it has a Single sim slot that supports 3G as well as 4G LTE. The WIFI and Bluetooth connectivity work faultlessly. Even the call quality on 3G and 2G network is good. The speakers and microphone used in the device are decent and I was pleased with the call quality of the device.

- The design could have been Better.
- High Price.
Concluding Thoughts: Meitu M4 Review
In conclusion, the Meitu M4 comes with a distinct design which some people may like and others may not. Moreover, the specs for the smartphone are okay and the distinguishing feature is the 13 Mega Pixel Front selfie camera that can take decent selfies.
Additionally, the integration of Meitu Apps with the Camera native application and availability of tons of options for clicking images and different effects will please selfie lovers.
However, the design and space utilization on the front of the smartphone could have been much better. Also, the pricing in India should be definitely around 10K considering there are lots of great smartphones available at a very affordable price in India.
