Micromax has launched its new mid-range smartphone Micromax Canvas 5.
The smartphone is priced at Rs. 11,999 while the Micromax Canvas 4 when it was launched was priced at Rs. 15,999. Micromax keeps higher pricing for some of the canvas series smartphone vs. Yu in the promise of better quality.
The Micromax Canvas 5 was released after a long time ever since the release of Micromax Canvas 4. In the last few months, the company has released several canvas series smartphones like the Canvas Spark (priced @Rs. 4,999), and Canvas express two priced @ Rs. 5,999.
The Micromax Canvas 5 comes with good mid-range specs. The smartphone comes with a textured plastic black cover which resembles faux leather cover we have seen some of the earlier smartphones.
The smartphone looks good with the metallic frame surrounding the edges. Micromax says that the canvas 5 is 4.8 mm thick visually, but the smartphone measures more than 8 mm in thickness.
An overstatement from Micromax. The smartphone looks good from sides and front with contoured smooth edges much like iPhone 6.
The Canvas 5 carries the similar specs like the Chinese counterparts in this price range. The smartphone has a 5.2-inch Full-HD screen (1920*1080 pixels) with 423 PPI. The screen size is ideal, and the display looks okay with the screen seamlessly getting blended into the body.
The smartphone comes with 5 MP front shooter and with a first flash. The camera performed well in daylight a bit of focus lag but didn’t impress in low light.
The front camera is not great but better than what we have seen on the Yureka.
At the rear, there is a 13 MP camera which comes with auto-focus and a dual led flash. The rear camera also takes some time to focus but has a satisfactory performance both in daylight and night.
The rear camera is present at the top of backside with removable back cover revealing dual sim slots and a micro SD slot underneath.
The Octa-core Mediatek processor (MT6753 Soc) powers the device and has a clock speed of 1.3 GHz.
The smartphone also comes with an adequate 3 GB ram to support multitasking. The Canvas 5 runs on Android lollipop 5.1.
Micromax also has said during the launch that the smartphone is likely to get the Android Marshmallow update. However, no final update date is provided by Micromax.
Out of its 16 GB internal storage, the phone provides around 10 GB for user access. The smartphone has 64 GB of storage capacity via micro-sd card.
The battery is removable and carries 2900 mAh capacity, which will deliver a day of back up with ease.
The side buttons for volume and power are not as smooth to press as we would have liked.
