Microsoft Lumia 550 was unveiled by Microsoft at an event couple of days back at an event in New York along with the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL.
Update – 30-December-2015 – Lumia 550 has gone on sale on Amazon India priced at Rs. 9999. The smartphone price is too high for the specs and features the smartphone offers. It is ridiculed on Amazon for getting launched on such a high price when a market is super competitive.
The Lumia 550 replaces the Lumia 640 and the Lumia 640 XL which have been moderately successful windows smartphones. The Lumia 550 priced close to Rs. 8,999 will compete against the Yureka Plus, Moto E 4G and Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime in the Indian market.
To recap Lumia 550 has a 4.7-inch screen with HD Display (1280*720) resolution which offers good reading experience. The screen is IPS LCD display and offers a good 315 PPI.
Design wise the smartphone resembles the earlier generations of Lumia with bold colors and a bit of bulky build. The build quality and the poly-plastic material looks of better grade compared to the one used on some of the low-cost mobiles.
The Windows 10 logo is now seen at the back of the smartphone with the front side having Microsoft written at the top of the device.
Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 Quad-Core processor with a clock speed of 1.1 GHz. The Lumia 550 comes with 1 GB of Ram which may be adequate to run the Windows 10 OS OS.
Historically all Windows mobiles are less resource hog in comparison to Android and even with lesser Ram and processing power perform equivalent to Android counterparts.
The Lumia 550 is by no means a thinner mobile it measures 9.99 mm and weighs 149 grams.
The Lumia 550 comes with a single Nano Sim, 4G LTE support for high-speed data along with the native support for 3G and 2G data connection. The smartphone comes with USB 2.0 / WIFI and Bluetooth 4.1 support.
The internal storage on the smartphone is 8 GB, and is expandable using a micro-sd card to a massive 200 gigabyte.
The smartphone comes with a 5 Mega-Pixel primary camera which has a f/2.4 aperture, led flash and Autofocus support.
Microsoft may not be very keen to increase the Megapixel count, but a lot of users still does believe that the Megapixel on the camera is relevant and when there are a lot of 13 MP camera smartphones available n this price range, it will be difficult to convince them that Lumia 5 MP camera can deliver.
The front camera is also only 2 Megapixel which is good for video calls and maybe for occasional selfies.
The battery capacity is 2100 mAH, and the smartphone can have a maximum 2G talk time of 17 hours.
The three major features which you get when you buy the Lumia 550 are:
Cortana – The virtual assistant helps you do things with the use of voice commands and can be fun to use Cortana on this Windows 10 mobile. Cortana helps you manage things better gives you information about weather, traffic conditions and even reminds you of important meetings.
Microsoft Office – When it comes to productivity suite, there is nothing in the world that beats the Microsoft office, same is even true on mobile devices. You get the office App with the Lumia 5550 which works best in the Windows 10 environment.
One Drive – The Microsoft Lumia 550 comes with the One Drive support which helps you store all your images and videos on the cloud and access them whenever needed. However, you may need a good data connection to fully use this feature.
Overall – Microsoft Lumia 550 looks like a positive step for Windows devices and pricing in the hyper-competitive market will decide if the smartphone becomes massively popular or not. The good thing about the Microsoft smartphone is the build quality which they inherited from the grand old Nokia.
