Moto Z Play 2nd Gen or Moto Z2 Play is the latest modular smartphone from Motorola launched yesterday in the US.
Motorola launched the Moto Z Play last year and is one of the best battery smartphones with great design and build. This year they have refreshed it with an incredibly thin Moto Z2 Play (just 5.99) mm in thickness. Improving some of the key aspects of the phone like camera, design, and processor. But also Moto have cut down on the best feature of the last years Moto Z Play, battery capacity by almost 15%.
Moto Z Play 2nd Gen also comes with a modular design with magnetic strips at the back to connect the Moto Mods. There are hardly any other manufacturers who are thinking modular, LG has dropped the modular concept with the LG G6. Though, recently Android Co-founder Andy Rubin launched the “Essential Phone” with modular design and a weird front camera placement.
The modular concept and Moto-Mods came with the Moto flagship Z series and was also bundled with the mid-range Moto Z Play.
Almost after a year, Lenovo is back with its successor – Moto Z2 Play. It’s a combination of Moto Z and Moto Z play as far as the looks go. The handset is thin and measures at 5.99mm thickness which is almost 1mm thinner than the already slimmer iPhone 6s and Moto Z Play.
Moto Z2 Play is thinner, faster and better …
The phone looks elegant with a premium metallic build, there are no antenna lines at the back, but the magnetic points to connect the Moto Mods. At the front lies a new oval-shaped fingerprint scanner like the Moto G5 Plus, there is 2.5D Curve glass and a small front flash on the front side.
The Z2 Play still has a large circular camera dial protruding outward. The Moto Z Play 2nd Gen flaunts 5.5 inch Ful HD 1080p, AMOLED display along with 2.5D curved glass on top. There is also Corning Gorilla Glass protection.
Powering the phone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SOC along with 4 GB of RAM. It ships with 2 storage options, 32 GB/64 GB internal and supports micro SD card as well. The phone comes with Android v7.1.1 out of the box with a minimum amount of bloat.
Optics is where Moto Z Play 2nd Gen is vastly improved in comparison to the 1st Gen. The Z2 Play sports a 12MP with f/1.7 aperture, dual-pixel autofocus rear camera. While the front side has a 5 MP, f/2.2 aperture selfie shooter with dedicated front flash.
Interestingly, it’s predecessor was popular because of the stellar battery life it offered with its 3510mAh battery. Oddly, Motorola has sacrificed that incredible battery performance in the name of sleekness and it now comes with 3000 mAH battery pack. A poor decision, at least for super users. The Moto Z2 Play also comes with turbo-charging support which can charge the mobile upto 50% in just 30 minutes.
On the positive side, it still will be able to deliver above average battery life, because of the power efficient SD626 SOC, 5.5-inch FHD AMOLED display and stock android interface.
The 3.5 mm headphone jack lives on in the Moto Z Play 2nd Gen, and the mobile also comes with NFC and USB Type-C support. Along with this, the handset retains its water-repellent nano-coating making it splash proof.
The Z2 Play costs $499 (Rs 32,000) for the 64 GB model and will be only available through Verizon currently. The phone will be available in 3, Lunar Gray, Nimbus Blue, and Fine Gold color options.
Additionally, if you buy the Hasselblad camera Mod which costs Rs. 19,999 or the JBL Sound Boost you will have to pay additional Rs 6,999.
There’s no information about the availability, in the Indian market as of yet. The phone may get launched in India, probably by July 2017. We reviewed the Moto Z Play, and it was truly a battery monster which we will miss on this new Moto Z Play 2nd Gen.
Motorola has also recently launched the Moto G5s Plus which is a good phone with the Dual Rear camera and competes with the Xiaomi Mi A1.
