Nokia has launched their 6th Android Phone today, a budget offering – Nokia 2. Nokia has previously launched Nokia 3, 5,6,7 and Nokia 8, and today (31/10/2017) has unveiled the most affordable mobile in the series.
The mobile is launched at an event in New Delhi, and it is the first Nokia mobile which has been unveiled in India ahead of China. Notably, the Nokia brand is owned by HMD Global which takes care of manufacturing, sales, and distribution of Nokia phones.
Nokia 2 Details, Specs and Features
Price and Availability – Nokia 2 will go on sale in India in Mid-November through retail channel and may also get listed online. The mobile comes in 3 color variants – White, Black, and Copper.
The exact price for the Nokia 2 is yet not shared by the brand, though the announced price is Euro 99, equivalent to Rs. 7400. We can expect it to launch at either Rs. 6,999 or Rs. 7,499, later in November.
Nokia said that India is a crucial market for the brand, and they want to have a presence in over 100,000 retail outlets by the year-end.
While Xiaomi rules the Online market space, other brands are looking at a more aggressive retail strategy to gain market share.
Design – The Nokia 2 comes with a polycarbonate (plastic) build for the rear cover, while the edges are made using the Aluminum 6000 material, which is also used in Nokia 6.
The build material ensures that it is lightweight and at the same time is robust to handle wear and tear. The build quality on the mobile looks top notch and is much better in comparison to other phones in this price range.
Nokia phones are known for their excellent build and all-weather design, Nokia 2 is no exception.
The phone measures 9.3 mm in thickness which is a bit high, and also comes with IP-52 splash resistant rating (not waterproof).
Display – Additionally, Nokia 2 offers a 5 Inch LTPS HD (1280*720) pixels screen, with 283 PPi. The display comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection to reduce scratches. The build and Corning glass protection makes Nokia 2 a robust mobile for day to day usage.
Nokia spokesman also said during the launch that it has one of the best displays, which comes with a very high contrast ratio, and also uses the In-Cell display technology to improve the quality.
Battery Capacity – According to a survey done by Qualcomm and Counterpoint research, about 97% people want good battery life as a top feature in their smartphone (Rs 6000 to Rs 10000 Price range).
So, Nokia 2 comes with a 4100 mAH capacity battery, which the brand says will work for two days to address this need of people.
HMD has not shared if it comes with the fast charging support or not.
Other top features people want as per the survey is Display size and Quality, 4G support, and a better camera.
Performance – Powering the Nokia 2 is a mediocre and old (launched in 2015) Qualcomm Snapdragon 212, Quad-Core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. The SD 212 is outdated SOC and more than two years old now.
A better option would have been to use a Snapdragon 425 or even an SD 430 which powers several phones in this range.
OS and Ram – Nevertheless, the Nokia 2 also comes with just 1 GB of Ram which is also too less to make Android work smoothly.
The Nokia 2 will come with the Android Nougat 7.1.1 with stock experience and will get an Android Oreo 8.0 update.
Nokia 2 also comes with the Google Assistant, which is a first for low price budget phone. Unfortunately, the Nokia 2 has got just 8 GB of internal storage which is too low compared to most rivals. However, the phone offers micro-sd card support up to 128 GB.
Camera – The Nokia 2 has an 8 Megapixel rear camera which offers an LED flash and also has Autofocus support. The front selfie camera has a 5MP lens.
Other Features – Nokia 2 comes with 4G LTE as well as VOLTE support and will work with the JIO sim. There is also support for Bluetooth, WIFI, Micro-USB and FM Radio. However, Nokia 2 lacks the fingerprint scanner.
Nokia 2 Competition
Not everyone cares about the premium build quality, but a lot of people in India care about having beefy specs. Nokia 2 does not strike as a low-cost performance phone, but more as a budget mobile which comes with excellent software experience, design, and battery life.
