Top Features and Details of Nokia 8
Camera – The key highlight of the Nokia 8 phone is it’s Carl Zeiss Dual Camera setup at the back. The Dual cameras are in trend these days as most smartphone manufacturers are offering it. The Nokia 8 catches up on the trend and has partnered with the old companion, Carl Zeiss, to give Nokia 8 an edge over rivals.
The Nokia 8 comes with two 13 Megapixel rear cameras (13 MP Color sensor and a 13 MP monochrome sensor). The camera comes with f/2.0 aperture and has PDAF, Optical image stabilization, IR range finder and Dual tone LED Flash. The camera is capable of recording 4K videos.
The front camera also comes with decent specs to keep the selfie lovers happy, it offers 13 Megapixel Zeiss Lens with f/2.0 aperture and display flash to click better selfies.
Special Feature – Nokia has added a unique feature called “Bothie”, sounds weird, the rear and front camera can simultaneously capture videos and images. According to Nokia the Bothie feature can be great for content creators and people who want to share their moments in a split screen manner recorded from both rear and front cameras on social media.
It seems to be an interesting feature to explore, but the name bothie is a bummer.
Design – The smartphone is made from premium Aluminum 6000 material and comes in 4 colours. The two colours Copper and Blue comes with polished finished (glossy) while there are grey and blue colour variants which have a matte finish.
The glossy designs somewhat look like the HTC U11 liquid finish but is an impressive touch. Nokia says it takes more than 40 processes of machining, anodizing and polishing and more than 20 hours to get the desired look on the glossy surface. They are machined from a single block of aluminium to ensure high finish and consistency.
Display – The smartphone comes with 5.3 Inches IPS LCD Display with Quad HD resolution (2560*1440) pixels. There is Corning Gorilla glass 5 for protection and the display also comes with 2.5D Curved glass. The Nokia 8 display is very bright and comes with a maximum brightness of 700 nits.
However, the design and display look very 2015ish as it is unlike the 2:1 aspect ratio based LG G6 or infinite display of Samsung S8. There are still noticeable bezels at the top and bottom.
At the front side, there is a home button which also houses the fingerprint scanner, the speaker grill is placed at the bottom of the device and antenna lines are well concealed at the top and bottom.
The 3.5 mm headphone jack is located on the top side while the USB Type C port with support for USB 3.1 is located at the bottom of the smartphone.
Performance – The Nokia 8 is powered by the top of the line Qualcomm Processor Snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.45 GHz and comes with the Adreno 540 GPU. Nokia 8 comes with an improved heat management design with a copper pipe with liquid cooling to ensure that the device stays cool even during graphics intensive tasks.
The smartphone has 64 GB of internal storage which can be expanded to 256 GB using the micro-sd card slot. The Nokia 8 comes with 4 GB of Ram which seems less compared to a lot of flagships offering 6 GB or even more.
OZO – Nokia 8 comes with a new Audio technology called as Nokia OZO which enables a 360 degree sound recording to go along with your 4k footage. The new OZO technology is developed by Nokia to offer an immersive recording experience for content creators.
OS – The Nokia 8 runs on the latest Android Nougat 7.1.1 operating system and will also get an early update to the Android O since the device runs on pure stock Android.
Battery – The smartphone comes with a 3090 mAH capacity battery which is sufficient for single day usage. There is also support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 and it comes with a 18W charger to ensure you can charge it rapidly.
The Nokia 8 has support for LTE CAT 9 with maximum download speed upto 450 MBPS. The smartphone measures 7.9 mm in thickness and it weighs 160 grams which are acceptable for the 5.3-inch display size.
Finally, Nokia has also added an IP54 rating which makes it splash proof but is not waterproof or dustproof like the rival Samsung S8. The Nokia 8 is priced at Euro 599 or Rs 45000 and will go on sale in early September in some of the countries. We can expect India launch in Mid October ahead of the festive season.
Early Opinion Nokia 8
Overall the Nokia 8 looks promising for HMD global and it’s their first flagship device. There are some hits like the Carl Zeiss Lens, top of the line performance, Nougat and a good overall build and design.
On the flip side, it lacks the futuristic looks of rivals S8 or G6, misses on the IP 68 water and dust proof design, 6 GB Ram and 128 GB Storage.
We compared the OnePlus 5 with the Nokia 8. Also the higher version of OnePlus 5 offers better experience and also offer 8 GB of Ram and 128 GB storage which is worth considering.
