Published on 30 – Jan – 2016 – OnePlus 2 has launched the 16 GB variant of the most successful OnePlus 2 which was launched back in June 2015 with 16 GB storage. OnePlus at that time claimed that they would also get the 16 GB variant for India soon, but they did not launch the 16 GB variant in 2015.
Update – 15 March-2016
One Plus 2 team has cut the price for the 16 GB variant to Rs. 20,999 and the 64 GB variant has also got the price cut of Rs. 20,000 and now is priced at Rs. 22,999.
Xiaomi founder Bin Lin today announced the price for the upcoming Xiaomi Mi5 at Rs. 20K to 27K for the Indian market. OnePlus 2 price cut is being seen as a move to sell more stock before the Mi5 goes on sale at an aggressive price.
Now OnePlus 2 16 GB variant is launched, and the smartphone is priced at Rs. 22999 which is Rs. 2000 less when compared to the 64 GB of OnePlus 2.
Key Specs and Details
The new OnePlus 2 16 GB also has 3 GB of ram when compared to the 64 Gb variant which comes with 4 GB RAM. Rest of the specs for the OnePlus 2 (16 GB) are same when compared to the OnePlus 2 (64 GB) model.
To reiterate what we will get in the OnePlus 2 (16 GB), it has a 5.5-inch display with Full HD resolution and comes with 401 PPI.
Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor clocked at 1.8 GHz and comes with Adreno 430 GPU.
Further, the device has got 16 GB of internal storage which is non-expandable, you can’t use a memory card with the device.
It has 3 GB RAM which is sufficient for all tasks, the Android smartphone never uses 4 GB ram, at least I have never see OnePlus 2 use anything above 2 GB. However, it won’t hurt to have the 4 GB RAM for future proofing the smartphone.
The One Plus 2 comes with a fingerprint scanner at the front which is quite snappy in performance.
The smartphone comes with a decent 13 MP rear camera which comes with Dual LED Flash and f/2.0 aperture with the ability to record 4K videos on the device. The Front camera is also decent and comes with a 5 Megapixel sensor.
The Dual sim device supports 4G LTE bands in India and also has support for native 3G and 2G data. The smartphone does not have support for NFC but is one of the early devices to come with the USB Type C support.
The OnePlus 2 now runs on the Oxygen OS 2.2, and the new OS update brought lots of bug fixes and performance improvements to the camera and sim selection.
Verdict – Should You Buy the 16 GB Variant
I would say not at this price point at least. It is just a difference of 2K between both the variants and you would be much better off if you have the additional storage and Ram.
If the price had been below 20K it would have made more sense to get the 16 GB variant, that too in case you don’t need the additional storage.
Also in related news, the OnePlus X which was launched at Rs. 16,999 ( a good front camera mobile) has now got invite free, and you may be able to buy it from Amazon India without an Invite. We are still waiting to make it invite free on Amazon India in some other countries it is already present.
