Looking for a great flagship phone which doesn’t break the bank – the Nokia 8 and OnePlus 5 are great options in sub 40k price range
Nokia once enjoyed over 70% market share in India, and had more than 50% share of global smartphone shipments. All this was before the rise of Apple, Google, and Samsung.
Nokia is the worst failure story of a large tech giant, which was not able to keep up with the rivals.
The world moved on, and Nokia as a mobile brand was almost dead.
After the takeover by the HMD Global, now they develop and market Nokia branded Android smartphones. The Finnish company, HMD Global is already selling Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 3310 in India.
A few days back, HMD Global launched ‘Nokia 8’ in India. It is Nokia’s first Android Flagship smartphone. Nokia 8 comes with a premium design, and it is priced at Rs 36,999. As far as online stores are concerned, Nokia 8 is Amazon India exclusive, and it would be available starting from 14th October. However, Nokia 8 will also be available via offline stores.
India’s premium smartphone market has grown significantly in recent years. Recently, ‘OnePlus’ was able to outperform Samsung (Market Leader) and Apple in the premium smartphone segment. According to a report by IDC, for Q2 2017, ‘OnePlus’ brand achieved the top position with a market share of 57% in the premium mobile market.
OnePlus 5 can be termed as a fantastic mobile in terms of overall performance as well as the price. It comes with a price tag of Rs 32,999, and it is Amazon exclusive smartphone. Also, there is an 8 GB version with 128 GB storage which is priced at Rs. 37,999. On the other hand, Nokia 8 comes with a price tag of Rs. 36,999 and has 4 GB of Ram and 64 GB of internal storage.
Let’s compare the specifications of both the smartphones.
DISPLAY AND DESIGN
Both the smartphones offer premium metal unibody design. However, in terms of design, ‘Oneplus 5’ is clearly inspired by iPhone 7 Plus. On the other hand, Nokia 8 has a unique design comes with a more flashy and glossy look.
The Oneplus 5 will appeal to buyers looking for a subtle, sophisticated look while the Nokia 8 is flashy (especially the blue color) and more suited for flamboyant users.
OnePlus 5 flaunts 5.5 inch Optic AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080p resolution and 401 PPI. On the other side, Nokia 8 comes with a smaller display of 5.3 inches but has a better screen resolution of 2560 x 1440p and 554 PPI.
Both the phones have Gorilla Glass 5 and also have a Fingerprint sensor. OnePlus 5 is 7.2 mm thick and weighs 153 grams whereas Nokia 8 has 7.9 mm thickness and it has 160 grams weight. Also, Nokia 8 comes with a splash-proof design.
Further, the OnePlus 5 is available in Soft Gold, Slate Grey, and Midnight Black colors. The Nokia 8 comes in 4 color options – Polished Copper, Polished Blue, Tempered Steel and Tempered Blue.
PROCESSOR AND RAM
The 64-bit Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Processor (MSM8998) and Adreno 540 GPU powers both devices. Hence, both the mobiles offer similar output as far as processing is concerned. However, OnePlus 5 comes with huge 6 GB RAM whereas Nokia 8 offers 4 GB of RAM.
Oneplus 5 has 64 GB of internal memory, and there is no option to expand the storage. On the other hand, Nokia 8 comes with 64 GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 256 GB via Micro-SD Card.
The Oneplus phone offers Dual Rear Camera Setup with 16 MP Primary sensor with f/1.7 aperture Plus 20 MP Secondary sensor with f/1.6 aperture.
Also, the OnePlus 5 comes with EIS, i.e. Electronic Image Stabilization and has 16 MP Front Camera with f/2.0 aperture for beautiful selfies.
Nokia 8 also packs Dual Rear Camera Setup following the Dual Camera trend. Nokia 8 has 13 MP Main Camera Plus 13 MP Secondary Camera with Colour and Monochrome sensors equipped with Carl Zeiss Optics.
Both Cameras on the Rear side has f/2.0 aperture, can shoot 4K videos and comes with OIS.
Also, Nokia 8 has 13 MP Autofocus Front Shooter with f/2.0 aperture. Nokia aims at creating a new trend with its new Camera feature called ‘Bothie’. Moreover, the Bothie feature uses front and rear camera simultaneously. You can even live stream videos using this feature, as the phone can record and stream both rear and front camera footage simultaneously.
The advantage of the OnePlus Dual camera system is that you can take better portrait shots with a more natural background blur compared to the Nokia 8 which also comes with a portrait mode but is not as good as OnePlus.
In terms of general photography, both the cameras are good, and neither of these has a clear advantage over the other. However, the Nokia 8 seems to be better for rear camera shots.
Nokia has included OZO Audio feature in Nokia 8 that provides 360-degree audio experience and also slightly improves the sound quality if you are using a high-end headphone.
OnePlus 5 runs Oxygen OS 4.5 (based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat) whereas Nokia 8 provides Stock Android experience with Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
It is confirmed that both the mobiles will receive Android 8.0 Oreo by end of the year. Recently, HMD Global announced that all Nokia smartphones including Nokia 8 will even receive the ‘Android P’ update.
We think regarding the user experience and software, OnePlus is slightly ahead. As you get some good customizations, and even the additional ram contribute to make it snappy.
BATTERY LIFE AND CONNECTIVITY
OnePlus 5 packs 3300 mAh battery life with Dash Charging support. On the other hand, Nokia 8 comes with 3090 mAh battery capacity with Fast charging support. Connectivity features include WiFi, USB Type C, GPS, 4G, VoLTE, Bluetooth, NFC connectivity, etc.
OnePlus 5 and Nokia 8 offers features like 4G VoLTE, Fingerprint scanner, 3.5 mm Audio jack and USB Type C Port.
