There are no changes in the hardware configuration of this special edition phone compared to the standard version.

Oneplus says, “Phone design is inspired by the planet of Kraits, the base material is white and have evenly distributed grey specks, creating a beautiful white sandstone finish”.

Also, the phone comes with a special Star Wars logo on the bottom side of the back cover. To go with the red theme, Oneplus has used a red button for the alert slider. The antenna lines are also concealed, blending perfectly in the new white and grey surface.

To make the experience more customized Oneplus has also included custom Star Wars wallpapers that fit snuggly to the 18:9 aspect ratio display. You can download the star war wallpapers from XDA Forum if you want to customize your phone.

Further, to delight the Star War fans, the phone comes with an uber cool case. The mean looking Kylo Ren case looks straight out of the Star Wars movie, and definitely is an endearing possession.  You can head over to Amazon India or Oneplus store to have a closer look at this tempting devil.

Oneplus 5T Launch and Details

OnePlus 5 was launched on 20th June 2017, and today on 16th November the next Gen Oneplus device with cutting-edge technology is unveiled by the company.

The Oneplus 5T comes after 5 months of Oneplus 5 launch and offers many features which are not present in the predecessor. If you bought the Oneplus 5 you are going to feel the slight pinch.

OnePlus Journey

Carl Pei, the co-founder of Oneplus, started the presentation sharing their journey so far and also pointed out couple of key things –

  1. OnePlus X was a mistake, and consumer wants flagship devices from Oneplus.
  2. One Plus 3 and 3T were incredible, and Oneplus 5 is another milestone.

Carl Pei said they are not the first with the bezel-less display, but they wanted to get it right unlike some other recent brands which suffered from a poor display.

He did not name LG (V30) or the Google Pixel XL 2, but the hint was obvious how these brands are struggling with the display.

OnePlus 5T

OnePlus 5T is one of the most awaited phones for 2017, and it arrives before the Christmas and winter holidays shopping season.

Let’s talk more about the Oneplus 5T and what differentiates it when compared to the rival phones and Oneplus 5.

Display and Design

The most notable change for the Oneplus 5T is its display. The mobile comes with a 6.01 Inch Optic AMOLED display with a 1080P resolution (2160*1080), with 401 PPI.

OnePlus 5T 3

The display is immersive and offers a much better experience compared to the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio displays. The 18:9 aspect ratio makes the screen to body ratio on the OnePlus 5T (80.5%) compared to the 73% on the Oneplus 5.

This essentially means that most of the front side is your display with minimum bezels. There is also the presence of 2.5D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection.

OnePlus emphasized that the adaptive screen is an incredible feature which adjusts (contrast and brightness) according to the environment or based on the applications you are using. For instance, while playing games, the display will have a higher contrast to make the experience more immersive.

The design is very similar to the OnePlus 5, but the significant change is the absence of the physical home button at the front and the addition of the fingerprint scanner at the back of the device.

The Oneplus 5T comes with the on-screen navigation keys, power button, volume rocker and Alert slider (special button like the iPhone). The phone is made of anodized aluminum, making it thin as well as robust.

For the record, the 5T weighs 162 grams and has a thickness of 7.3 mm.

Camera

The Next Big Change for the Oneplus 5T is it’s improved camera. The Oneplus 5 camera was good but was nowhere near to the best camera phones. OnePlus plans to change that and improved two key aspects of photography with the 5T – portrait mode and low light imaging.

The Oneplus 5T comes with the Dual Rear Camera (16 MP+ 20 MP) with a focal length of 27.22mm for both the lenses. The 16 MP camera uses the Sony IMX 398 sensor and has a f/1.7 aperture, while the secondary camera uses a new Sony IMX 376K sensor with 20 MP lens and f/1.7 aperture.

The F/1.7 aperture is an excellent improvement over the f/2.6 aperture in the previous device and makes the Oneplus 5T a better camera for low light imaging at least on paper.

The camera does not come with one telephoto lens and the other standard lens, a setup seen on the Samsung Note 8 or iPhone 8 Plus. The 2X zoom that we get on the OnePlus 5T is a digital zoom instead of an optical zoom.

The front selfie camera comes with the 16 Megapixel lens and has a Sony IMX 371 sensor with f/2.0 aperture, similar to Oneplus 5.

Battery & Sound

The OnePlus 5T comes with a 3300 mAH capacity Battery which is sufficient to run the device all day and also has the Dash Charging support.

There were some concerns that OnePlus may kill the jack, but to our relief, it still holds on to the 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Oneplus spokesman said that they would continue to use headphone jack till USB Type C is more popular.

The 5T also offers superior sound from the bottom firing speaker, also features Dirac HD Sound and has 3 microphones for noise cancellation.

Face Recognition

While most of the other things were already leaked (we even have accidental unboxing videos already :)) the Face recognition feature is what added a bit of surprise for us.

The Oneplus 5T comes with the Face recognition technology which can unlock the device in less than 0.4 seconds. (Slower than 0.2 seconds unlock time for fingerprint scanner).

Face unlocking uses 100 plus face identifiers to recognize and store the facial features and is very secure as per Oneplus. Though Oneplus said for the payment apps, face unlocking won’t work due to security concerns.

Apple iPhone X has been under fire for the facial recognition getting fooled by relatives of users and even by masks. People are questioning the security of the Apple iPhone.

Moreover, Oneplus said but they are not using it for payments, means that it is not a full proof security feature like the fingerprint scanner.

Performance

As expected the OnePlus 5T runs on the fastest processor available in the market – Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, clocked at 2.45 GHz and also has the Adreno 540 GPU.

Unfortunately, the Oneplus 5T comes with the Android Nougat 7.1, while there were lots of expectations that One plus may be able to ship it with the Android Oreo 8.0.

Though not to despair the Oreo update is on the way and the 5T also has the Oxygen UI to make things more interesting.

The Oneplus 5T also comes in two variants:

  1. 6 GB RAM and 64 GB Storage
  2. 8 GB RAM and 128 GB Storage

Early Performance Benchmark Scores for Oneplus 5T

Antutu Benchmark – 179,790

Geekbench Single Core Score – 1960

Geek Bench Multi Core Score – 6701

Connectivity

The phone comes with all the connectivity options that you need, it has Dual Sim, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, supports FDD LTE as well as TDD LTE and there is even support for CDMA.

The 5T supports DL CAT 12 (600 Mbps) speeds for 4G connectivity.

Sale Date, Price in India

The Oneplus 5T comes with a Price tag of US $499 or Rs 32,999 for the 64 GB / 6 GB ram version. The higher variant with 128 GB storage and 8 GB ram comes at $559 or Rs 37,999. The OnePlus 5T will start selling in India from Amazon and Oneplus store from 21st November 2017.

The Oneplus 5T comes in the Slate Grey Color and Mid-Night Black, Oneplus would be saving the Soft Gold version for a later launch.

OnePlus also shared that they are really popular in India and are ahead of Apple and Samsung in premium mobile sales on Amazon India – Oneplus 5 – 32% share, iPhone 7 -15%, while the Samsung S8 Plus – 10%.

Though iPhone and Samsung S8 sell on Flipkart also so this data shared by OnePlus does not paint the right picture.

Initial Thoughts About OnePlus 5T

The OnePlus 5T is an excellent upgrade over the Oneplus 5 in terms of display and camera. I always expected them to have these two features in the OnePlus 5 itself as other brands like Samsung launched their bezel-less phones in March 2017.

Though it still lacks wireless charging, water, and dust proofing, the price is still affordable, and it is going to be good value for money for people looking for a flagship phone with all essential features and incredible performance.

Should You Buy Oneplus 5T? – Which Version 64 GB or 128 GB?

The camera is probably slightly better, though unlikely to match the camera quality of Samsung Note 8, iPhone 8 Plus or the Google Pixel 2. Also, if you are already planning to buy the OnePlus 5T I think you can buy the 64 GB / 6GB Ram version unless you have a need to use the 128 GB of Storage.

The life of any smartphone is not more than 2 years and you would also like to have something better after that, the additional 2 GB Ram is not going to make any difference in day to day performance of your phone. If I have to buy for myself, I would pick up the 64 GB version and get a nice expensive case for it.

  1. Yup. This is definitely going to be my next phone. Been researching about this and it beats iPhoneX and Galaxy S8 in Battery, Speed real time performance. Simply incredible at that price. And I don’t mind at all the 1080p screen.
