US Launch Event and Intro – OnePlus 6T
The new OnePlus 6T was launched yesterday at a mega event in NewYork, US. If you are aware, OnePlus changed the launch date from 30th October to 29th, as Apple is having an event on 30th October.
The brand didn’t want to lose on the hype to launch a major new product alongside Apple.
The India launch event is scheduled for today (30th October), and it is happening in New Delhi at 8:30 PM (Watch Live Link).
Now we know everything about the phone after yesterday’s event, and most of the things are going to be a boring repetition apart from the India price and launch offers.
Anyways, it was the most crucial launch for the brand in the US, as they are partnering first time with a US telecom carrier (T-Mobile) to offer the phone at an affordable price.
Also, it is the first phone in the US with an in-display fingerprint scanner or the waterdrop notch. The launch event was focused on hardware as well as the software enhancements.
But more than that OnePlus tried to make an emotional connect with the community, and emphasized a lot more on how they listen to the OnePlus fans when developing a new product.
More importantly, if you observe the keynote, how smartly the Chinese top executives let the local native English speakers handle the event.
This helps to make an emotional connect with the audience and deliver the message better.
Oneplus even showed several videos about their customer care executives and how they are helping customers.
Also, showcased the positive work culture of the brand and its happy employees who are passionate about making a better phone.
All intended to invoke feelings, that the brand really cares for its end customers. Overall the event was good and explained the product in detail.
I think the low point was the Qualcomm President’s keynote, who was probably in a very different state of mind and talked only about 5G.
He is probably working hard on the 5G implementation in the next processors.
Why talk about a feature which is not present on the OnePlus 6T? But will arrive next year most likely on the OnePlus 7 or 7T.
Why create a doubt in potential customers mind to wait for the next gen phones with 5G capability?
Nevertheless, let’s have a look at upgrades we are getting in the Oneplus 6T.
What are the New Upgrades?
6.41 Inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Display
The Oneplus 6T comes with a bigger 6.41 Inches display with a waterdrop notch similar to the Oppo F9 Pro that I reviewed a few days back.
You can hide the notch if you want to, in the software settings.
The display is bigger in comparison to the Oneplus 6 (6.28 Inches) and the notch size is reduced.
The waterdrop notch is probably the best, least intrusive on any phone, and definitely a welcome upgrade.
There is a 16 MP front camera inside the waterdrop notch and it also houses the proximity, ambient light sensor and the earpiece in the tiny space.
Also, the Oneplus 6T is taller than the OnePlus 6 and comes with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio in comparison to the 19:9 on the predecessor.
The 6T comes with a gorgeous FHD+(1080 x 2340 pixels, 402 PPI) AMOLED panel that offers 600 nits of brightness, 100% color gamut, and 86% screen to body ratio, for a great viewing experience.
Another minor change is lesser bezels, not only at the top but also at the bottom side.
OnePlus 6T Corning Gorilla Glass 6 Is Scratch Resistant
Also, there is now the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6 which makes the display more resistant to shattering due to accidental falls.
Notably, the Gorilla Glass 6 is not significantly harder in terms of scratch resistance than the Gorilla Glass 5 but provides more strength against breakage due to falls.
Below is a video from Jerry Rig Everything where he has tested the hardness and scratch resistance of the Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
He tries different tools with a different level of Mohr’s hardness.
The 6T seems to have a good level of scratch resistance and doesn’t get marks easily. But it does get scratched with harder tools on both front and back.
The overall scratch resistance is good but I would still suggest using a screen protector or a back case with it to avoid any damage to the display or glass body.
Bigger Battery – 3700 mAH
The Oneplus 6T is slightly thicker (0.45 mm) in comparison to the predecessor but houses a much bigger 3700 mAH capacity battery in place of 3300 mAH.
As a daily driver, I think having a larger battery is much more important even if it compromises thinness. As per Oneplus, you can get upto 23% additional battery life on the 6T.
However, the OnePlus 6T despite having a glass back cover doesn’t support the wireless charging which many users want in the next-gen phones.
The phone comes with the Dash Charger 5Volts/4Amp (Fast Charger, 20 Watts) support same as the last iteration.
In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
I have used the In-Display fingerprint scanner on the Vivo V11 Pro extensively, and the phone even looks the same as Oneplus 6T with a waterdrop notch display with 6.41 Inch AMOLED panel.
The scanner takes a little bit more pressure and getting used to it may take some time. According to Oneplus the In-display fingerprint scanner(takes .34 seconds to unlock) is faster than the face unlocking (0.4 seconds).
At times you will press the wrong area of the screen, or it will not unlock if you just press quickly and lift your thumb. Otherwise, it looks cool and works as intended.
How Does the In-Display fingerprint Scanner Work on the OnePlus 6T?
We know that there is an in-display scanner inside the screen and when you press your finger against the display, it recognizes the fingerprint impression.
But what most people don’t know is that the fancy green light and animation that we see is actually crucial for its working.
When you press the screen on the spot for fingerprint recognition, the sensor below the display throws a beam of light on your finger and takes a photo of the impression.
That impression is matched with the already stored version of the fingerprint details, and the phone unlocks.
When you use the phone in the night and try to unlock it, it will still glow brightly to recognize the impression.
The in-display fingerprint technology used in the OnePlus 6T is developed by Goodix while on some of the Vivo phones use the Synaptics technology.
Performance, Speed and OS
Like several other flagships, the OnePlus 6T also comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa-Core Processor and the Adreno 630 GPU.
The phone comes with 6 or 8 GB of DDR4X ram with the storage option of either 128 or 256 GB (UFS 2.1).
Notably, the Oneplus 6T doesn’t come with the 64 GB storage version, and there is even no support for the micro-sd card to expand the storage.
OnePlus is using a smart boost software optimization feature that keeps some of the frequent used Apps and Games in the memory cache to load them quickly.
Instead of loading the Game files from the storage, the OnePlus 6 keeps them in the RAM to access them when needed. This speeds up the launch time.
We have seen this approach used by other manufacturers, Asus Zenfone 5Z uses it in the name of Optiflex.
The Oneplus 6T comes with the Android 9.0 Pie out of the box along with the Oxygen OS.
The phone has a much better gesture navigation support even in comparison to the new Pixel phones.
Also, if you don’t want to use the gesture navigation, you can always switch back to the three navigation buttons from the settings.
Since the Oneplus 6T is a mid-year refresh, the company has not made any changes to the camera hardware.
However, the camera now comes with 2 new features – portrait lighting, and the Nightscape.
Taking cues from Apple and Google, Oneplus is working on the software features to enhance the camera experience on the 6T.
NightScape will also be available on the Oneplus 6 as it has the same camera, but will not make it to the older phones.
Portrait Lighting is similar to what we have seen on the iPhone X or the Huawei phones.
When you are using the device in the portrait mode the lighting around the subject can be changed to match the mood of the scene, making it darker or lighter or add a studio effect.
NightScape is a similar approach like the Pixel 3’s night sight, which is making headlines due to significant improvements in low light imaging.
Nightscape uses a long exposure of about 2 seconds when clicking a picture during night time.
Multiple shots are clicked by the camera and are merged using an advanced HDR algorithm to reduce noise and improve low light photographs.
To recall, the rear camera on the OnePlus 6/6T comes with a 16 Megapixel primary lens with Sony IMX519 sensor with 1.22-micron pixel size and f/1.7 aperture.
The secondary rear camera on the phone is a 20 Megapixel Sony IMX376K sensor that comes with 1-micron size and has a 1.7 aperture size.
There is support for optical image stabilization as well as Electronic image stabilization to improve the video quality, and it can even record 4K videos at 60FPS.
Moreover, you can even record slow-motion videos at 1080P (240 FPS) and 720P (480 FPS).
The front camera is a 16 Megapixel Sony IMX371 sensor that comes with a f/2.0 aperture and has a 1-micron pixel size.
Overall camera Quality is good but no match for absurdly expensive rival phones (such as Pixel3, Note 9 or P20 PRO).
Other Essential Features
The Oneplus 6T comes with Dual Sim support but doesn’t have the expandable micro-sd card slot.
Further, it has Dual 4G VOLTE, NFC, WIFI, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type C (2.0) support.
Aforementioned, the phone is slightly thicker and measures 8.2 mm in thickness and weighs 182 grams.
Contrastingly, the OnePlus 6 has a 7.75 mm thickness and weighs 177 grams.
India Price, Colors, Variants, and Availability
The Oneplus 6T is initially available in two colors – midnight black and the mirror black (glossy finish).
Oneplus will launch more colors for the 6T in the coming months and may even launch a two-tone variant.
The phone will be available in India starting 1st November and you can now pre-order it from Amazon or official OnePlus website.
The first sale for OnePlus 6T on Amazon India starts at 12:01 am (night) on 1st November.
As part of the launch offer, you can get Rs. 2000 cashback on the Citibank and ICICI bank credit/debit card on 1st November.
From 2nd November you can get Rs. 1500 discount on other brands credit/debit card (check with both online and offline retailers).
You can also purchase the Oneplus 6T from Reliance Digital stores as well as Oneplus owned exclusive stores from 2nd November 2018.
The Price in the US and India for different Oneplus 6T models is given below:
- OnePlus 6T With 6 GB Ram and 128 GB Storage – $549 or Rs. 37,999.
- OnePlus 6T With 8 GB Ram and 128 GB Storage – $579 or Rs. 41,999
- OnePlus 6T With 8 GB Ram and 256 GB Storage – $629 or Rs. 45,999.
Trend How the Price for OnePlus phones have gone up from OnePlus One to OnePlus 6T
|Model||Launch Date||India Price (Rs.)|
|Oneplus 1||2, December, 2014||21,999|
|Oneplus 2||28, July 2015||24,999|
|OnePlus 3||14, June 2016||27,999|
|Oneplus 3T||02,December 2016||29,999|
|OnePlus 5||27, June 2017||32,999|
|OnePlus 5T||28, November 2017||32,999|
|Oneplus 6||15, June 2018||34,999|
|Oneplus 6T||29, June 2018||37,999|
From the original OnePlus 1 which was launched for Rs. 21,999 when Samsung was selling the flagship for around Rs. 50,000, OnePlus has come a long way.
In fact, the current pricing makes it more premium than some other offerings like the POCO F1 or the Asus Zenfone 5Z in the market.
Oneplus 1 was probably what the POCO F1 is currently, and we may also see POCO increase the price over the years, as the brand becomes more established, and they try to include more latest features.

OnePlus 6T Comparison With Samsung S9, Samsung Note 9, iPhone XR, Pixel 3
In fact, it is odd to compare a phone which costs way less than any of the above phones. All the above phones cost more than Rs. 65,000 which is almost double than the 6T.
However, for the sake of comparison, the OnePlus 6T is a tremendous value for money and is a good mid-term refresh by Oneplus.
The phone is fast, fluid and offers great user experience. The most noticeable difference is in camera Vs the flagship phones, and that too in tricky light conditions.
Images clicked in good light are fantastic even on the Oneplus 6T, the difference becomes more apparent in indoor shots in artificial and low light conditions.
Also, Oneplus is promising 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of security updates on the Oneplus devices, that is appreciable.
Most of the phones mentioned above, including the 6T, don’t have a headphone jack apart from the Samsung Note 9 / S9.
Major Cons and Shortcomings
1. Does the OnePlus 6T has Wireless Charging, Notification LED or Water-dustproof design.
No, the Oneplus 6T doesn’t have wireless charging support despite having a glass back cover, maybe the next gen will get it.
There is no notification led which is also a strange choice by the Oneplus. However, the OnePlus team said the users can see the notifications when they lift up the phone.
Unlike expensive flagships, the 6T doesn’t come with any IP rating or water and dustproof design.
2. Does it have Stereo Speakers, or the 3.5 mm Headphone Jack?
No, there are no stereo speakers on the OnePlus 6T. It comes with a single firing bottom speaker which is significantly loud.
No, there is no headphone jack on the OnePlus 6T.
You will have to use either the wireless headphones (like Oneplus Bullets) or can buy the wired USB type C headphones from Oneplus.
Notably, Oneplus is not supplying free earphones with the purchase, you will have to buy them separately.
But you get an adapter for converting USB type C port to 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The absence of 3.5 mm headphone jack is an inconvenience for many who either want to use a different pair of headphones or just want to plug the Aux cable of the car audio system.
Critics say that the benefit of removing the 3.5 mm headphone jack is increased sale and profit from wireless and USB type C earbuds.
If the brand is able to sell a couple of million of these devices, you can do the math. Moreover, according to Carl Pei’s own survey on Twitter, a huge majority of people wanted the jack.
Do you like headphone jacks? 🤔 (2018 edition)
— Carl Pei (@getpeid) March 14, 2018
Adapters are undeniably a pain to carry as I learned using the Mi A2, also you can’t charge the phone while listening to music.
3. Are the Cameras Improved on the OnePlus 6T?
No, the OnePlus 6T has the same set of cameras as the OnePlus 6 but comes with two software features (NightScape and the Portrait Lighting).
Should You Buy the OnePlus 6T?
The Oneplus 6T looks modern with the waterdrop notch display which is indescribably better than the ugly notch on the Pixel 3 XL.
The removal of the headphone jack is forgivable considering we are getting a cool in-display fingerprint scanner and a larger battery.
It is a super fast phone with great performance, probably the best software experience, and you don’t need to rob a bank to buy it.
You don’t need to overthink the decision of buying it, indeed, it is a great value for money phone for the price.
Yup, go ahead and buy it if your old phone is not living up to your expectations.
But don’t get tempted by all the hype if you are happy with your current phone.
