OPPO F5 offers Face Unlocking & 20 MP Selfie Camera
Updated on 28/November/2017 (Oppo F5 Youth Editon and 6 GB RAM Version Launched) – OPPO has recently launched the new F series phone called Oppo F5 and it has gone on sale on 9th November 2017.
The new Oppo F5 is available in 2 variants with different RAM and storage options. The base version comes with 4 GB ram and 32 GB storage and will be available for Rs.19,990 from 9th November in Gold and Black color options.
However, the more expensive 6 GB variant will be up for grabs for Rs. 24,990 on 4th December in Red and Black color options. Notably, The pre-booking is started on Flipkart for the 6 GB ram version. The Oppo F5 with 6 GB ram comes with 64 GB internal storage expandable upto 256 GB using the micro-sd card slot.
Besides, there is a pre-order bonus, people who pre-order the base variant from Nov 2- Nov 8 on Flipkart can get it for Rs.18,500. Flipkart is also offering exchange offers, an additional 5% discount on Axis Bank credit card.
For starters, Oppo F5 is a far cry as far as the design goes in comparison to the previous Oppo phones. It comes with a new bezel-less display.
The mobile comes with an 18:9 aspect ratio, 6-inches FHD+ (2160*1080) pixels LCD display. Also, it has 2.5D curved glass on top. The back cover is made from very high-quality polycarbonate but looks like metal.
Moreover, the back of the phone looks more like the iPhone 7 with a single camera placed at the top left corner and curved antenna bands on the top and bottom.
Also, there is an oval shaped unique fingerprint scanner at the back which looks easily accessible. The bottom side has a mono speaker, micro USB port, and 3.5mm audio jack.
The Oppo F5 weighs 152 grams and has a thickness of 7.5 mm; seems easy to use.
Powering the device is a MediaTek MT6763T Processor also commonly known as Helio P23. The processor is clocked at 2.5 GHz and comes with the Mali-G71 MP2 GPU for gaming and graphics intensive applications.
Further, the processor is made from 16 Nm process which gives a boost of 40% on processing speed without increasing the energy consumption.
However, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 or 625 would have been an ideal choice.
Aforementioned, there is 32 GB onboard storage which can be expanded using the dedicated micro SD card slot. The internal storage also seems less for the price considering most phones offer 64 GB in this price segment.
OPPO F5 comes with the latest Android Nougat 7.1 OS along with the Color OS V3.2 skin. Additionally, the Color OS comes with features like split screen mode, O-Share (allows to share files, photos, videos) quickly.
Fingerprint Scanner and Face Unlocking
Next, Oppo F5 comes with a fingerprint scanner for enhanced security and also has support for face recognition for quick unlocking of the device.
Face unlocking feature is gaining momentum after the iPhone X launch and Android phone makers are also using the technology to offer added convenience. Apple may have ditched the fingerprint reader entirely, but the Oppo still retains it.
What good is an Oppo phone if it doesn’t come with an excellent selfie camera? Oppo F5 comes with a 20 Megapixel, f/2.0 selfie camera for better low light imaging.
The key Highlight of the Selfie camera is not the higher MP count but the use of Artificial Intelligence to enhance the selfies.
Like most premium selfie phones, the F5 also supports portrait mode in the selfie camera. It does a great job with the help of artificial intelligence for improving the bokeh effect without blurring out the edges of the subject.
Furtermore, the rear camera comes with a 16 MP lens and has a f/1.8 aperture; Dual LED flash. Despite having a lot of Megapixels both the camera’s on Oppo, F5 lacks support for 4K video recording which is ridiculous at this price point.
Battery and Connectivity
Notably, the F5 is driven by a 3200 mAh capacity battery without the fast charging support.
Sadly, it still retains the old micro USB port for charging and connectivity and refuses to accept the modern USB Type C port.
For connectivity, the phone supports 4G/VoLTE, Bluetooth v4.2, OTG, and packs almost all the essential sensors including an ambient light sensor, proximity, gyroscope, and accelerometer.
At the price tag of Rs 19,990 and Rs 24,990, the Oppo F5 faces fierce competition from Honor 9i, ZTE Z17 Mini, Moto Z2 Play, OnePlus 3T. Also, there are some excellent mid-range phones available like the Xiaomi Mi A1, Moto G5S Plus, but selfie enthusiasts will still drool on the new Oppo phone.
Oppo F5 Youth Edition
Also, Oppo has launched a new Oppo F5 youth edition in the Philippines. It may launch in India soon. There are some changes in the hardware and camera for the Oppo F5 Youth in comparison to the Oppo F5.
For starters, the Oppo F5 Youth comes with same display size, resolution, processor and battery capacity. However, it comes with 3 GB of Ram and has 32 GB of internal storage. Also, the rear camera has a 13 Megapixel lens with f/2.2 aperture. The front camera is toned down and comes with a 16 Megapixel f/2.0 aperture lens.
Operating System and other specs are similar to the Oppo F5. We can expect the Oppo F5 Youth to come with a price tag of Rs. 16,000 in India.
