Update – 9th December 2018
Oppo R17 PRO is gone on sale in India and is now available for purchase from Amazon and it brings the incredibly Fast Super VOOC charging. Oppo has also launched the Oppo R17 in India but it is yet to go on sale.
It is the first phone in the Oppo R series that the company has launched in India. Mostly, the R Series devices are available only in China.
The Oppo R17 Pro was launched in China last month and now it is available in India too. The Oppo R17 Pro is available for Rs. 45,990 from Amazon for the 8 GB Ram and 128 GB storage version.
Notably, it is more expensive and competes with the company’s own OnePlus 6T (Price Rs. 37,999). Also, Oppo has launched the Oppo R17 for Rs. 34,990 and it is Rs. 11,000 cheaper in comparison to the Pro model.
At the end of the article, I have shared key differences between the R17 and the R17 Pro.
Most Important Feature in the Oppo R17 Pro
- Impressive Dual Rear Cameras with Large F/1.5 Aperture
- Beautiful two-tone Design With 91.5% screen to body ratio.
- Super VOOC Charging – Fastest Charging Speed.
- Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
- SD 710, 8 GB Ram and 128 GB Storage.
The Oppo R17 comes with a premium two-tone glass back design. The phone looks immaculate in the radiant mist and the emerald green color options.
The two-tone design was started by Huawei in the P20 pro and now is copied by several brands including Oppo and Vivo. The R17 Pro comes with a waterdrop notch design with a single front selfie camera.
The back side has a vertically aligned triple rear camera assembly and the device has an in-display fingerprint scanner. The phone has 7.9 mm thickness and weighs 183 grams.
The R17 Pro comes with incredible 91.5% screen to body ratio and even has the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6 Protection.
The phone has a large 6.4 Inch AMOLED display that comes with Full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) panel and offers 407 PPI pixel density.
There is a fingerprint scanner present under the display, similar to the OnePlus 6T.
The display panel has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and is sufficiently bright for outdoor conditions.
Performance and OS
The Oppo R17 Pro is the first smartphone in India to launch with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor and the Adreno 616 GPU.
The processor comes with a new Image signal processor, AI capabilities and has a maximum clock speed of 2.2 GHz.
It is faster in comparison to the Snapdragon 660 but is no match for the flagship Snapdragon 845 Processor.
For a smartphone above 40K, the Snapdragon 710 looks like a compromise and maybe a deal breaker for many buyers.
Further, the phone has 8 GB of DDR4 ram and comes with 128 GB of internal storage. The storage is expandable up to 256 GB using the hybrid sim-slot.
The mobile runs on the Color OS Version 5.2 and has Android Oreo 8.1 and will also get the Android 9.0 Pie update in the future.
Another highlight of the Oppo R17 Pro is the variable aperture camera set up at the back. There is a F/1.5 / F2.4 aperture variable aperture camera 7P lens. It is the largest aperture on any phone camera and is similar to the Samsung S9.
The primary sensor with variable aperture has a 12 Megapixel lens, the secondary camera has 20 Megapixel (f/2.6) aperture lens and the third sensor is a TOF 3D stereo camera.
The TOF 3D stereo camera was launched by Vivo in June 2017 and it improves motion recognition, 3D photography and AR imaging of the camera. (Oppo, Oneplus, and Vivo usually share the innovations)
Further, the camera comes with 4K video recording support and has OIS (Optical image stabilization).
What’s more, the camera comes with AI ultra-clear engine to improve the images and even has an Ultra Night mode like the Pixel 3 XL (night sight).
The front selfie camera on the R17 Pro has a 20 Megapixel lens that comes with AI portrait mode and has a F/2.0 aperture.
Battery Life and Super VOOC Charging Explained
The phone comes with 2 batteries instead of 1. One of the batteries has 1850 mAH capacity and the second one has 1800 mAH capacity. The mobile has a total battery capacity of 3650 mAH.
Both the batteries can charge parallel using the Super VOOC charging and can draw maximum power up to 50 Watts.
The Bi-Cell battery configuration allows the device to charge upto 40% in less than 10 minutes which is not possible on the conventional single battery setup.
There is also a five core smart protection from preventing the battery to heat excessively.
In-Display Fingerprint Scanner – Aforementioned the device comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner to offer quick unlock feature.
Face Unlock – The front camera comes with face unlock technology and can unlock the device quickly.
Further, the device has a USB type C port for charging and listening to music. Unfortunately, the R17 Pro also lacks the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Also, the phone doesn’t have wireless charging support or water/dust proof design.
Oppo carried out a Poll on twitter to find out the best feature of the R17 Pro. Maximum participants are excited about the Super VOOC charging and the Waterdrop notch.

Should You buy the Oppo R17 or the R17 Pro
Both the phones look fantastic and even has decent cameras. However, the biggest flaw is the presence of mid-range processors that are typically expected in sub 25k smartphones.
Considering you want to buy the phone for 2-year usage, these processors will feel slower after a year in comparison to flagship devices.
The R17/ R17 Pro has a good design and looks stunning, however, I find it difficult to recommend these due to lack of flagship processor in this price range.
