The Low-Cost Android Phones are adapting the Face unlocking or Face Recognition Technology
Update – 6/Jan/2019 – Apple always pushes something new into the market, no wonder that its devices cost an arm and a leg.
Back in 2013, Apple released the iPhone 5S with Touch ID and within no time all the other smartphone manufacturers followed the footsteps of the Cupertino-giant. It seems like the history is repeating again. However, Apple has moved from the Fingerprint scanner technology to this new feature.
With the iPhone X, Apple is no longer using the fingerprint reader, but instead, it has implemented a new revolutionary technology called Face ID.
Again, following the launch of the iPhone X, incumbent manufacturers are trying to mimic Apple. However, Apple’s technology is far more sophisticated, and the device has dedicated hardware to detect the face.
Whereas, the other manufacturers are only using selfie cameras and a little bit of software magic to accomplish the task.
To put this into perspective, Apple’s Face ID can work even in the pitch-dark, but the rival’ devices can unlock only in well-lit conditions.
However, these phones do have a fingerprint reader along with face unlock. Without any further due let’s get to know about some affordable phones with face unlock feature.
Redmi Note 5 Pro
Price Rs. 13,999
Xiaomi’s is doing pretty well nowadays, and saying ‘pretty well’ would be an understatement as the company is the top vendor in the smartphone market.
If we can excuse the ‘flash sale’ thing, there would be no complaints from my side. The recently launched Redmi Note 5 Pro is an absolute beast which has got more to offer than we actually pay for it.
It even has a face unlock feature which it does with the help of a 20-megapixel selfie shooter.
Other key specifications include a 5.99-inch 18:9 display, Snapdragon 636 SoC, dual 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel rear camera, 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB onboard storage, and a 4,000mAh battery.
It is a great mobile with a fast processor running on the MIUI 9.2 and the Android Nougat 7.1 OS that you can bank on for daily usage.
Honor 9 Lite
Price Rs. 10,999
The Honor 9 Lite is a very affordable phone featuring face unlock, and it also has a trending full view display.
It comes with a 5.65-inch Full HD+ 18:9 display which runs Android 8 Oreo-based EMUI 8 beneath it.
An Octa-Core Kirin 659 processor coupled with 3GB/4GB RAM powers the device while a 3,000mAh battery fuels it. Optics wise it has a dual 13-megapixel + 2-megapixel camera both on the rear as well as the front.
It runs on the latest Android Oreo 8.0 Os along with the EMUI 8.0 and offers lag-free user experience. Also, it comes with a glass back design that is rare in the sub 20k price range making it one of the exceptionally good-looking budget phones with Face unlocking technology.
Price Rs. 13,999
The LG Q6 looks futuristic with its 5.5-inch 18:9 Full vision display but what disappoints is the buried-in entry-level Snapdragon 435 chipset. It is one of the first phones in India to launch with the Face recognition feature and bezel-less display. It even comes with the knock code to unlock the device.
Also, surprisingly, it doesn’t have a fingerprint reader, but it does have a face unlock feature. It runs on the Android Nougat 7.1 OS along with the LG UX and offers good user experience. In fact, it is the only phone in sub 15k from LG that is worth buying currently.
Other top features are a 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel selfie shooter, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, and a 3,000mAh battery.
Infinix Hot S3
Price Rs. 9,999
The Infinix Hot S3 was not launched with the face unlock feature, but instead, it has recently got the feature via OTA.
Furthermore, Powering the mobile is the Snapdragon 430 chipset coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.
Up front, there is a 5.65-inch 720p display and a 20-megapixel shooter while on the rear there is a 13-megapixel sensor. A 4,000mAh battery backs the Infinix Hot S3.
The Infinix Hot S3 is one of the cheapest phones with a 20 Megapixel front selfie camera that also doubles as a face unlocker.
People looking for a decent selfie phone under sub 10k price range can consider buying the Infinix Hot S3.
Vivo V7 and Oppo A83
Vivo V7 – 16,990 Oppo A83 – Rs. 12,490
Vivo and Oppo are gradually losing their market share in the Indian market as they are failing to impress the customers with what they have got. Now, let’s end this topic here and get back to our business.
The Vivo V7 and Oppo A83 both come with a face unlock functionality, where the former draws power from the Snapdragon 450 processor, and the latter comes with a MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 chipset.
When it comes to the screen, both the devices feature the same 5.7-inch 720p panel.
The Vivo V7 has a 16-megapixel sensor on the rear and a 24-megapixel shooter up front while the Oppo A83 houses a 13-megapixel camera on the rear and an 8-megapixel sensor on the front.
Other specifications of the Vivo V7 include 4 GB RAM, 32 GB internal storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery. Likewise, other features of the Oppo A83 include 3GB/4GB RAM, 32GB onboard storage, and a 3,180mAh battery.
Notably, the Oppo A83 only comes with the Face recognition technology and the face unlock feature but misses on the fingerprint scanner. Whereas the Vivo V7 also has a fingerprint reader at the back of the device.
iTEL S42 – Price Rs. 8,499
Lastly, we have the itel S42 that we reviewed recently and is the most affordable phone in the list that comes with the Face Unlocking feature. The phone was shipped without the face unlock feature and we recently got an OTA update that enables the Face unlocking feature.
I tested it with Specs and without wearing specs the phone can easily unlock though you need to press the power button and view the phone in a lit room.
Other than Face unlocking feature the itel S42 runs on the latest Android Oreo 8.0 Os and has a 13 Megapixel front selfie camera.
Powering the phone is a Snapdragon 425 processor and 3 GB ram. There are a 13 Megapixel rear camera and a fingerprint scanner at the back that work faster than the Face unlocking feature.
Also, we have a 3000 mAH capacity battery that easily works all day with ease and it even comes with 5.65 Inch HD+ Display with 18:9 aspect ratio.
Thanks for reading the post, let me know which is the best option for you among these and if I have missed any crowd favorites, I will add in the next update.
