At the MWC Shanghai 2017 event in China, the prominent chipmaker Qualcomm announced its latest budget Mobile Platform- the Snapdragon 450 Mobile Platform, which replaces the popular Snapdragon 435 platform globally.
This is the third major announcement from Qualcomm this year after the announcement of Snapdragon 835 and Snapdragon 660/630 chipsets.
Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 450 Mobile Platform brings improved in every aspect compared to the last year’s Snapdragon 435 SoC.
Catered to mid-range smartphones and tablets, the Snapdragon 450 is the first in its tier to use 14nm FinFET process and is designed to deliver significant improvements in battery life, graphics and compute performance, imaging and LTE connectivity over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 435 Mobile Platform.
The Snapdragon 435 Platform is built on the energy efficient 14nm FinFET process, same as last year’s Snapdragon 625/Snapdragon 626 chipsets. This essentially means that the new platform will deliver exceptional battery than the Snapdragon 435 chipset.
Qualcomm is saying they have brought improvements to four major aspects of the platform. Let’ see what the new Snapdragon 450 Mobile Platform brings when compared to Snapdragon 435.
1) Improved CPU and GPU
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 Mobile Platform comes with an octa-core chip, which is built using eight ARM Cortex A53 cores. This means that the Snapdragon 450 will be 25 percent powerful than the Snapdragon 435.
Additionally, the integrated Qualcomm Adreno 506 GPU delivers a 25 percent increase in graphics performance over the predecessor.
2) Battery Life
As said earlier, the Snapdragon 450 is built on the 14nm manufacturing process, making it possible for the chip maker to achieve insane battery life. Qualcomm says that the power management improvements result in up to four additional hours of battery life than the Snapdragon 435.
Furthermore, the chipset also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, which will charge the device from zero to 80 percent in about 35 minutes, as rated by Qualcomm.
3) Camera and Multimedia
Another aspect where the Snapdragon 450 seems to be a significant upgrade over the Snapdragon 435. The Snapdragon 450 is the first 400-series chip to support real-time Bokeh effects and also supports dual cameras. The craze for dual camera tech in recent times have seen an uphill, and with the Snapdragon 450, smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, Motorola, ZTE, etc. can add dual cameras in budget devices.
The Snapdragon 450 accepts two 13MP sensors or a single camera of 21MP. Also, it supports hybrid autofocus, 1080p video recording, and playback up to 60 fps, enabling slow motion capture.
Qualcomm states that the Snapdragon 450 also includes support for 1920×1200 full HD displays, as well as the Qualcomm Hexagon DSP, which enables multimedia, camera and sensor processing at greater performance and lower power than the previous generation.
4) Connectivity and USB
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 Platform comes with the latest Snapdragon X9 LTE modem, which utilises 2x20MHz Carrier Aggregation in both uplink and downlink to achieve speeds of 300 Mbps and 150 Mbps respectively. It also supports USB 3.0 and becomes the first to support so in the Snapdragon 400 series.
At the event, Qualcomm also said that the Snapdragon 450 Mobile Platform will ship with devices from Q3 2017. The first batch of phones is expected to be Xiaomi Redmi 5 series.
