The Coolpad Dazen X7 is priced at Rs. 17,999 and competes with Xiaomi Mi4 and One Plus One. The smartphone is manufactured by the Chinese company Coolpad and it is there first product to go on sale in India on June 2015. We earlier this week reviewed the Coolpad Dazen 1 which is getting launched at Rs. 6,999. Coolpad has done exclusive tie-up for launching both the smartphones on Snapdeal India.
We met Varun Sharma CEO of Coolpad at a promotional event in Mumbai, and tested the Dazen X7 along with the Dazen X1.
Here are the details based on the initial testing and first impression of the smartphone.
Review Coolpad Dazen X7
The Dazen X1 has more of a rectangular design with least contours and curves. It looks similar to the Lenovo or Huawei Ascend smartphone. The rear and front of the smartphone is protected by the Gorilla glass. The smartphone is quite thin measuring 6.5 cm.
There is nothing written on the front side of the smartphone and has very neat rectangular pure white layout.
The top side has the thin speaker grill below which there is camera and sensor for clicking selfies. The bezels are neither very thin nor very wide. The bottom side of the screen is made of polypastic and has gorilla glass coating to provide strength and durability.
The edge ring of the smartphone is made of metal and is silver grey in color as depicted in picture below.
The back side of the Dazen X7 is also white with 13 MP Camera and flash located at the center top side of the smartphone. The smartphone will be available in Gold and Titanium White colors
The camera is bulged a little outward and looks out of place with the fine white finish back cover, probably adding a smartphone cover will make that look much better. There is CoolPad written at the rear side of the smartphone in Grey color. The Bottom edge has speaker grills which sandwich the micro-USB charging port. The smartphone weighs 141 grams.
The screen resolution and display is good , colors don’t look oversaturated on the SUPER AMOLED Display Screen with 1920*1080 resolution. The screen has 5.2 inch size and offers 423 PPI resolution. The super AMOLED screens are usually expensive compared to the IPS LCD high resolution screens and Dazen X7 uses a Super AMOLED display.
Display is good and colors are calibrated well on the smartphone screen. No problem in viewing text and watching videos on the FHD screen.
The Smartphone is powered by the Octa core Mediatek 6595 processor clocked @ 1.7 Ghz. The Mediatek 6595 M is really powerful processor and scores around 46,000 in Antutu benchmark. The Dazen X7 has 2 GB RAM LPDDR3 while it’s competitors like Mi4 and OnePlus One offer 3 GB of RAM.
The smartphone is fast and we did not found any lag while opening and closing apps.
User Interface and OS
The smartphone runs on Android Kitkat 4.4.2 which Coolpad has said they are likely to upgrade it to Android Lollipop soon, but yet not given any date. The Coolpad Custom UI is pretty smooth and works without any lags, the App opening and closing is smooth, some cool transition and customization options are there in the UI. There are some new innovative apps like Rock wallpaper App, which changes your screen wallpaper instantaneously. The UI is known as the Cool U.I 6.0.
The Dialer is more greenish in color and looks refreshing compared to some other smartphones.
The UI though may take some time to get used to with Navigation options a little different compared to the stock Android.
Here are a few shots so you can visualize how the icons and dialer and theme looks on the Coolpad Dazen X7.
The Dazen X7 impresses with it’s good 13 MP camera which offers Autofocus and Dual tone LED flash. The rear camera is pretty impressive the sample shots we took were good with less noise in the medium lit room. The camera has a Sony Exmor IMX 214 sensor which is good at capturing good low light images. The aperture size is f/1.8 which makes it ideal for capturing good low light and artificial light images. The Dazen X7 has an optical image stabilizer which makes your shots more steady and clear.
The front Camera is also good with 8 MP resolution along with flash support it manages to take good selfies.
The Coolpad Dazen X7 has 4G LTE support along with standard 3G/2G/WIFI/Bluetooth connectivity.
Dazen X7 has 2700 mAH battery which is not mammoth, but Coolpad has done some battery optimization which makes the battery last more than 50 % compared to a normal battery. As was explained by the Coolpad CEO Varun Sharma, Coolpad has 6000 plus patents and invest a lot in R&D. The engineers @ Coolpad have created a software which will extend the battery life in Coolpad smartphones, by scheduling only 1-2 cores when the CPU has low load hence saving power and making the battery more efficient. We will have to wait and see how well this feature works when Coolpad offers it Via OTA update.
Verdict – Review Coolpad Dazen X7
Overall a good smartphone with decent camera and performance, couple of things could have been better, more curvy design, 3 GB Ram and Android Lollipop out of the box.
The Dazen X7 will go on sale exclusively on Snapdeal on 9 June 2015. Coolpad Dazen X7 comes with 1 year warranty and Coolpad also offers earphones with the Dazen X7.
