Ubuntu powered OnePlus One and Sony Xperia Z1 showcased at MWC which kicked off in Barcelona on 21st Feb 2016.
Cannonical has announced flashable ROM image of its Ubuntu mobile OS for Sony Xperia Z1 and OnePlus One.
Cannonical is the company behind the development of the Ubuntu OS.
Its very long time now since Canonical has shown it’s interest towards porting its Ubuntu OS for phones.
We have also seen some concept phones in past based on ubuntu appearing on the Internet but none of them came into reality. But we are glad to share we are going to see something beyond Android running on these smartphones.
Last year the company announced its OS support for Android based devices. But no devices came running with the Ubuntu OS except one or two smartphones, like the Meizu MX4, BQ Aquaris.
Also it made some efforts previously to make ubuntu available for many android smartphones but they all faced issues from bugs and not received proper support from community.
Now the company had chosen two popular Android smartphones the Sony Xperia Z1 and One plus One to provide a flashable ROM for them.
Also the company is collaborating with Sony and One plus community to provide continuous support on porting ROMs.
Apart from these phones the company is also working on ROM for some other devices including the Google Nexus 5.
So if you have any of these devices then you can enjoy ubuntu OS anytime soon. And followed by that many devices were expected to get added on the list
One of the notable feature with the ROM is the convergence support , which means the ability to transform the smartphone into a PC by connecting peripherals like monitor and keyboard.
So the OS can perform as a phone and also give a full desktop experience when need. A similar approach like Microsoft’s Continuum on windows 10 phones.
Unlike Cannonical’s previous effort which are not so successful, the company’s recent work is claimed to go well with proper functioning of all the hardware. But still we cant say its free from bugs which we will discover in the coming days.
