Samsung A9 Pro fits above the Samsung A5 Pro and the A7 Pro in their portfolio of high end smartphones. At this price point the A9 Pro will compete with the Asus Zenfone 3 and the Oneplus 3 in the Indian market.
Update – 22 September-2016 – The A9 Pro is now up for pre-orders on Flipkart in gold and black colors.
Design and Build – The Samsung A9 Pro comes with top notch build quality and feels premium with the glass and metal body finish. The front and the back side are made of strengthened glass and the edges of the smartphone are metallic. It looks like a larger iteration of the Samsung S7 with similar contours and design. The Samsung A9 Pro comes with a thin bezel 2.7 mm , which makes the display even more immaculate. The Smartphone offers 76% screen to body ratio which is decent. Despite of having a very large battery (5000 mAH) the Samsung A9 Pro measures 7.9 mm in thickness.
Display – The Samsung A9 Pro comes with an enormous display and if you like to read and watch videos you would love the 6.0 Inch SUPER Amoled Display with Full HD (1920*1080) pixels with 367PPI. Super Amoled Displays offers richer colors and better contrasts compared to the IPS LCD screens. The display also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and 2.5 D curve glass coating to make it more resistant as well as pleasing to touch.
Performance – The Smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 Octo-Core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz and comes with Adreno 510 GPU. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 is a very capable processor and is equivalent to a Snapdragon 810. We can expect immaculate performance from the Samsung A9 Pro.
The Samsung A9 Pro comes with 4 GB of Ram similar to the high end Samsung S7 and S7 edge.
Camera – The key differentiator between budget smartphones and premium smartphone these days are camera and overall build quality. The Samsung A9 Pro comes with a 16 Mega pixel rear camera with Optical image stabilization and f/1.9 aperture lens. There is a front 8 Megapixel camera which also has a wide angle lens and f/1.9 aperture.
Battery Capacity – This could be one of the major reasons you wish to buy the Galaxy A9 Pro as the smartphone comes with enormous 5000 mAH capacity which can easily last all day with moderate to heavy usage.
The smartphone also comes with fast charging support and can charge the smartphones from 0 to 100% in 160 minutes, that is really impressive.
Storage and OS – The Samsung A9 Pro comes with 32 GB of inbuilt storage and it can be expanded to 128 GB using a micro-sd card. There is a dedicated slot for the micro-sd card and 2 separate slots to use Dual Sim , a luxury you usually get when you buy a gargantuan sized smartphone. The smartphone also comes with the Android Marshmallow OS 6.0 along with the touch wiz UI. Though marshmallow has been released 1 year back it is still present only on 18.7 % of Android Smartphones globally. There is no word when the A9 pro will get an update to Android Nougat 7.0.
Connectivity – There are 2 sim slots which you can use with nano sim and there is also a dedicate slot for memory card. The smartphone comes with micro-usb port and skips the more futuristic USB type C . There is support for 4G LTE as well as Volte if you plan to use the JIO Sim on this device. The Samsung A9 Pro also comes with NFC support and has all necessary sensors.
Price – Samsung has kept the price at Rs. 32,490, which can be termed as acceptable considering it is Samsung (brand).
Overall – The smartphone looks good and comes with premium design and decent specs and great battery life. In this price range it will compete with the OnePlus 3 and Google Nexus 6P, which have better processor when compared to the Samsung A9 Pro.
However the Samsung A9 Pro has a better design, a larger display and a much longer battery life compared to Nexus 6P and OnePlus 3. The OnePlus 3 offers great value for money but not everyone would want the same smartphone.
