Samsung is finally warming up to challenge rival Xiaomi, by focusing on mid-range phones. On 12th April 2018, the company has launched the new Galaxy J7 Duo that comes with Dual Rear camera and 4 GB ram.
The Galaxy J7 Duo costs Rs. 16,999 and is available only in a single variant with 32 GB storage. You can buy it from retail stores or online from Flipkart or Amazon. It is available in two color options, either Gold or Black.
Also, a couple of days back company has launched the J7 Prime 2 in India, another mid-range phone for Rs. 13,999.
Top Features Galaxy J7 Duo
- First Samsung Mid-Range Phone With a Dual Rear Camera.
- Decent 3000 mAH Battery.
- 8 Megapixel Front Selfie camera with dedicated Flash.
- Latest Android Oreo 8.0 OS.
Samsung J7 Dual Design, Performance & Display
The Galaxy J7 Dual comes with a familiar design which looks similar to the earlier J-Series phones. It has a polycarbonate build with smooth edges and contoured body.
The Dual Rear cameras have a slight bulge and are flanked on one side by the LED flash and on the other by a speaker. The speaker placement seems to be odd as most phones have it at the bottom.
The front side has a home button that also houses a fingerprint reader.
Furthermore, it comes with a 5.5 Inch HD Display (1280*720) pixels resolution and has the legacy 16:9 aspect ratio. However, the display uses a Super AMOLED panel that is superior to most IPS LCD displays.
Unforgivingly, the J7 Duo fails to impress us with an HD only display in this price range, whereas most competing phones offer FHD or FHD+ resolution. But the silver lining is it comes with the Corning Gorilla Glass protection.
Powering the phone is an unknown Samsung Exynos 7 series Octa-Core processor that comes with 4 GB ram. Additionally, there is 32 GB of internal storage, which is user expandable.
For clicking selfies, it comes with an 8 Megapixel resolution (f/1.9 aperture) camera and even has a dedicated flash.
Besides, the company is boasting about the Face unlocking feature that allows you to instantaneously unlock the device by looking at it.
However, the highlight of the phone is its Dual Rear cameras, that comes with 13 MP + 5 MP lenses with a f/1.9 aperture. The large aperture is good for low light imaging.
Also, you can click portrait shots with the J7 Duo and even adjust the background blur amount, before or even after clicking the image.
OS and Other Features
Another key highlight for the Galaxy J7 Duo is the presence of latest Android Oreo 8.0 OS. It is one of the first mid-range Samsung phones to come with the latest Google OS.
There is a 3000 mAH capacity battery which is sufficient to run the device all day long, however, it is not known if it supports fast charging.
Lastly, it comes with standard connectivity options: Dual Sim, 4G LTE, and VOLTE, WIFI, Bluetooth etc. There is also support for Samsung pay and Samsung mall if you wish to use these services.

Initial Thoughts and Advise
The J7 Duo is not a competition killer but a safe bet from Samsung that may help the brand replace its aging portfolio. If you wish to buy a Samsung phone in the 15k to 18k price range, the J7 Duo can be a good bet.
However, there are phones like the Redmi Note 5 Pro, Honor 9i or the Oppo F5 that offer a distinct advantage in performance, Selfie camera or the battery life in comparison to the J7 Duo.
Aforementioned, the J7 Duo misses on the crucial 18:9 aspect ratio display which is something most buyers are looking for in the upcoming phones.
