Samsung Galaxy S6 Beats HTC M9 LG G4 in Benchmarks

Samsung S6 is a fast smartphone powered by the new Exynos 7420 processor, initially Samsung was supposed to use the Snapdragon 810 in the galaxy S6 and S6 edge, but decided otherwise. The Snapdragon 810 as per statement from Samsung had heating issues and due to which Samsung decided to use their in-house developed Samsung Exynos 7420 the first processor with 14 nm manufacturing process.

Snapdragon 810 VS Samsung Exynos 7420

The Samsung Exynos processor is an Octa Core  processor and is the world’s first mobile processor to be manufactured from 14 Nm Finfeet technology, it is the most advanced and technologically superior hardware. The Exynos 7420 brings the highest levels of efficiency, performance and productivity. When compared to Samsung’s 20 nm process technology, this newest processor enables up to 20 percent faster speed, 35 percent less power consumption. Snapdragon 810 is one of the fastest chipset and also uses the 20 nm process for manufacturing.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced semiconductor solutions, they also made the revolutionary Apple A7 chip which was used in iPhone 5s , now this may be surprising for some readers that Apple gets it’s processor made from Samsung’s semi-conductor unit. (you can refer wikipedia to read more on Apple A7)

It is also in news that Apple’s Next iPhone the Iphone 6s or iPhone 7 may also be powered by the processor manufactured by Samsung Electronics. The Exynos 7420 is ahead of it’s time and one of the best processor in terms of power consumption, performance and architecture. Exynos 7420  Octa Core also implements ARM big.LITTLE Heterogeneous Multi Processing (HMP), which makes it 57% faster than the previous generation of Exynos 5 series processors.

It is also powered by the Powered by ARM Mali™-T760 GPU which provides 74% better graphics performance compared to the predecessor. It means you can play any Android game on the beast without breaking sweat. Exynos 7420 has a core clock speed of  2.1/1.5 GHz A57 / A53. It also supports the much faster LPDDR4 RAM.

I am not a Samsung fanboy, was one of the first one to criticize launch of Samsung S5 in India for Rs. 50,500 or their inability to provide faster software updates. But Samsung Galaxy S6 is truly flagship material.

Snapdragon 810 has been in the news because of all the wrong reasons. First Samsung dumped it for heating woos. Then when HTC M9 got launched in the Mobile World Congress, we had enough of heating and throttling issues reported to dampen the mood for hardcore HTC fans. There are still reports of HTC M9 throttling the CPU too much when it begins to heat.

Throttling of CPU means the CPU clocks down from peak performance to a lower clock to reduce the heat produced; it also drops performance in games when that happens. Nothing new for Gamers who understand this phenomenon from PC graphics cards. The Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 has Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2.0  GHz Cortex-A57 along with the Adreno 430 GPU.

Snapdragon 808 – The Lg G4 opted to stay away from the fastest Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 and chose to go ahead with the Snapdragon 808 which is no where near to the Snapdragon 810 or the mighty Samsung Exynos 7420. The Snapdragon 808 actually don’t heat up and throttle as much as the Snapdragon 810. (read more on Android Authority). It is a Hexa Core chip Dual-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A57 & Quad-core 1.44 GHz Cortex-A53 used in LG G4.  It supports LPDDR3 RAM and is powered by the Adreno 418 GPU.

The Huawei P8 mentioned in the benchmarks below uses a HiSilicon Kirin 930/935 Processor which has Quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and is powered by Mali-T628 MP4 GPU. It is an in house processor developed by Huawei.

Verdict

What does all this means for a regular buyer maybe not too much all these smartphones are insanely powerful compared to previous generation smartphones. You will not notice a difference while watching movies, playing games or doing multi-tasking.

But for enthusiasts who want the latest and greatest from their devices, they will have to agree that Samsung has triumphed with their Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge this time, and left the competition in dirt. A win which was much needed by the shaking , smartphone market leader.
