Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge got launched at the MWC yesterday and both the smartphones come with the support for Wireless charging and are waterproof and dust proof with IP68 certifications.
Waterproof premium smartphone’s has been a forte of Sony , this time Samsung is venturing into this new territory to create differentiation for the new smartphones.
Wireless charging has been there with the Samsung S6 but the concept has not been able to take off much.
Mostly because one need to buy a charger dock separately and is a bit expensive.
Beyond these two new features Samsung also is bundling the Samsung VR Headset with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
The Samsung VR Headset is going to be free for the buyers who go with the pre-booking of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and edge smartphones between February 21 and 11 March 2016.
Mark Zuckerberg made a surprise appearance and also gave a demo for the VR experience and showcased how immersive is the video and gaming experience on the VR headsets.
Samsung has already launched the VR Headset in the Indian market couple of weeks back and is priced at Rs. 8,000 in the market. We are seeing a lot of VR headset bundling happening in 2016 , with Lenovo offering the VR headset with the recently launched K4 Note.
Samsung launched the 360 degree Samsung Virtual Reality Camera at the Mobile world congress. The camera is capable of recording 360 degree videos which can be streamed directly to the headset.
VR Headsets and 360 degree camera are something we would be seeing a lot in 2016 and 2017.
As the technology becomes more refined and cheaper we will see lot of videos and games for the VR headsets to come and open new dimensions for technology.
Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are poised to close the gaps which was there for the Samsung Galaxy S6 series, the biggest one was undoubtedly the battery life.
Samsung has used 3000 mAH battery capacity on the Samsung S7 and 3600 mAH battery capacity for the Samsung S7 Edge.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge also brought back the support for the SD memory card with upto 200 GB of supported memory capacity, something Samsung would love to have considering Apple don’t offer this feature in the iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy S7 will come at a starting price of EUR 699.99 (approximately Rs. 53,500) for the 32GB model while the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will start at EUR 799.99 (approximately Rs. 61,000) for the 32GB model. We may see some quick price rationalization by Samsung as has been with previous flagship launches. Indian price for the Samsung S7 can range from 50,000 to 55,000 and the S7 Edge can be in the range of Rs. 58000 to Rs. 64,000.
The display is quite similar to the last year S6 with resolution 2560*1440 pixels and offers a PPI of 565.
Samsung Galaxy S7 have a 5.1 inch screen and Galaxy S7 Edge have a 5.5 inch display. There is 4 GB RAM and the Snapdragon 820 processor (for US Models) or in some models can also have the Exynos 8890 processor too. (Samsung has not given details yet which regions they will give the Exynos 8890 or they will stick with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 for all models some early reports claims outside of US it will be Exynos 8890 including Indian market).
Camera on both the devices are similar with Dual Pixel 12 MP camera at the rear with 1.7 inch aperture size and Samsung claims that the camera is better when compared to the Apple iPhone 6s Plus specially for images taken in the low light scenario.
The front camera is not improved compared to the Samsung S6 comes with a 5 Megapixel selfie camera which is okay , we would have liked an 8 MP camera at the front.
The smartphone run on the latest OS from Google – Android Marshmallow and offers great user experience with ultimate amalgam of software and hardware.
