Samsung launched the new flagship of the year aka S8 and S8 Plus on 29th March 2017. Here are some more details about the devices and some price and availability indications for buyers in India.
Samsung will be launching the New Samsung S8 and S8 Plus on coming Wednesday, dated 19th April in India as tweeted by Samsung India. Currently the pre-registration for the smartphone is in progress.
The Samsung S8 is priced at Rs. 57900 in the Indian market the larger S8+ comes with a price tag of Rs 64900. The smartphones are available for purchase from Flipkart and will start shipping on 2nd May.
Samsung S8 and S8 plus this year comes with Free Wireless Charger Worth Rs 4499 and also there are a pair of AKG headphones which are worth $99. The Wireless charger will be only given to those buyers who will pre-order the Samsung S8 and S8 plus.
Lets have a recap of the Samsung S8 and S8 Plus features and how they are different compared to the previous generation of S series phones.
We have a Dream – Need to beat the iPhone – There was a time when Samsung used to make their best offerings made out of complete plastic. Although, it changed after the release of S6 and S6 Edge. Soon after the S7 and S7 edge release, it was very evident that Samsung has finally up their game in the hardware section, and is ready to directly compete with the iPhone leagues.
Forwarding to 2017, the S8 and S8 Plus takes the design and hardware approach to a whole new level and is leaps and bounds ahead of it’s competition.
The all new Galaxy smartphones rock a breathtaking “Infinity Display”. The word infinity compliments the design as there’s no hardware button upfront anymore.
The all black front hides the earpiece and sensors to such extent that when the display is off, one can only admire the single elongated sheet of glass. It has an overall staggering 83% of screen-to-body ratio, which simply puts the iPhones to shame when kept side by side.
The beautiful displays are protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Samsung has finally shifted to on-screen navigation buttons. Interestingly, they have integrated a haptic engine for the “home button” which allows the user to hard-press on it from whichever application they want. This decision has led to re-positioning of the fingerprint sensor.
Speaking of security, It is now placed at the back, which may not be a new thing for many people out there. Although, the position of the sensor might be annoying for many users.
It is placed right besides the camera lens. This absurd positioning may lead to a smudgy camera since it’ll become difficult for users to locate the sensor and be accustomed to it. The “Iris scanner returns along with face detection” as well. Allowing users to unlock the phone in 3 different ways.
The phone is more curvy and corners or any edges are less sharp compared to its previous siblings. The S8 and S8 Plus share almost the same hardware except 2 things. It is ironic since the “smaller S8” flaunts a whopping 5.8 inch QHD super AMOLED display and runs on 3000 mAh battery. While, S8 Plus flaunts a massive 6.2 inch QHD super AMOLED display and runs on 3500mAh battery.
Samsung has played safe on the battery capacity after the Note 7 debacle. In an interview yesterday Samsung has stated that the battery life on the S8 and S8 Plus will be more than the S7 and S7 Edge. But we will have to see if there is any improvement in the real life scenarios.
Both the phones support quick charging, wired and wireless as well. It supports both, WPC pads most buyers have at homes and PMA pads found at Starbucks outlet. It also retains the IP68 rating, and makes it completely waterproof and dust-proof.
The phones will be available in 2 variants, Snapdragon 835 SOC for the US market and the Exyno 8895 SOC for the International market including India. The processors are coupled with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage.
64 GB is the new standard for the flagship devices this year and we agree to Samsung on this.
It does have the storage expansion option, but unfortunately it’s embedded in the hybrid SIM slot. Although, one can easily use 2 SIMs as 64 GB of storage would be plenty for most of the users out there.
The new Galaxy S8 smartphones feature a similar camera like the Samsung S7 with some improvements, though nothing radical. It flaunts the same 12 MP with pixel size 1.4µm, f/1.7 aperture, dual autofocus and OIS rear camera.
The camera take multiple shots and pics the best one out of those. Samsung this year has hold back on the camera improvements and is likely to upgrade the camera next year with the Samsung S9 and S9 Plus.
The front has seen a bump from 5 MP to 8 MP with f/1.7 aperture, “autofocus sensor” for great selfies.
Both the phones will ship with Android Nougat v7.0 and will feature 32-bit & DSD support. Finally, Samsung have focused on audio quality in their flagships. Since, the S7 and S7 Edge were practically the only flagship smartphones with poor audio output.
Samsung is also bundling the AKG earphones with the new S8 and S8 Plus to make sure that the music buffs are not disappointed as has been the case with the previous galaxy phones. iPhone has always been miles ahead when it comes to the music experience.
Connectivity wise, both the smartphones will be equipped with latest Bluetooth v5.0, WiFi, 4G/VoLTE.
The devices are available in Midnight Black, Orchid Grey, Arctic Silver and Maple Gold.
