Technical specs give you a perspective that obviously the MacBook Pro is better as far as specs and performance are concerned. But it doesn’t tell which is right for you.
The MacBook Air is thinner and lighter and has more battery life. The big question, I think is the additional Rs. 24,000 or ($350) which you need to spend if you are planning to get the MacBook Pro 2015 Vs. the MacBook Air 2015.
I had this dilemma which you might be having a couple of weeks back but finally decided after a lot of analysis – paralysis. Let’s first look at Pros and Cons for both the laptops then I will give you my final advice.
The Mac Book PRO offers Best in Class Display, Keyboard and Trackpad – it is stunningly Gorgeous.
MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook Air 2015
Faster Processor more snappy performance, better at doing multi-tasking opening 20 windows in a browser, working on images and editing videos, compressing data. The faster processor makes the MacBook Pro more future proof compared to the MacBook Air.
4 GB More RAM – This is one of the compelling reasons, 4 GB Ram on Mac Book Air may be sufficient now 1-2 years down the line may need an upgrade. The Indian Macbook Air model doesn’t come with the 8 GB version which is available in the US and other countries till now.
Retina Display – The screen resolution of the MacBook Pro is 2560*1600 which is incredible(with 227 PPI), and the text and videos look much better on the MacBook Pro compared to the MacBook Air. The MacBook Air 13 inch display has a resolution of 1400*900 which is better than most laptops with 1366*768 resolution but would have loved it if it was even 1920*1080, a full HD display. It is the best display I have ever seen on a laptop.
The other significant difference you will see is the color reproduction on the MacBook Pro screen is unmatched to any other laptop screen. Colors are more natural and closer to reality on the Macbook pro display.
All these subtle differences make the Macbook pro display far superior.
I firmly believe the Keyboard and display and the trackpad makes a lot of difference in the user experience.
Force Touch TrackPad: – The trackpad is force touch on the MacBook Pro while the MacBook Air 2015 has a standard trackpad. The force touch trackpad on the MacBook Pro is best I have experienced so far. It eliminates the need to use the external mouse which I prefer to use even with the best of Dell or Lenovo laptops.
Battery Life: Both the notebooks have insanely good battery back up, but here the MacBook Air scores slightly more due to additional 1-2 hours of battery life.
Thinness and Weight – While the MacBook Pro is quite light in weight, only 1.48 Kg the Air is light as a feather weighing only 1.1 kg. The thickness for MacBook Pro is while MacBook Air is even thinner to the MacBook Pro.
Let’s also look At the Performance benchmark for both MacBook Pro 2015 and MacBook Air 2015.
GeekBench Mark MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook Air 2015
MacBook Pro is about 20% faster in the geek benchmark Vs. The MacBook Air.
Unigene Heaven Benchmark 4.0 – MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook Air 2015
The difference in the Unigene Heavens benchmark suggests MacBook Air and Pro are quite close in graphical performance.
Disk Speed Test – MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook Air 2015
Not too much of a difference in data transfer speed both utilize the same PCI-E based SSD.
Battery Life – MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook Air 2015
MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook Air 2015 – Colors and Screen View-ability
Clearly, the MacBook Pro 2015 Wins over the MacBook Air 2015 with more natural colors and smoother high PPI display screen.
Concluding Thoughts – Should You Buy MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook Air 2015.
I think we have covered most of the differences and Pros/Cons benchmarks and specs for both the notebooks. It is time to make up the mind which is the right choice for you.
Let me put it bluntly there is no absolute right choice. Everyone has different needs and wants, so I am just penning down – Why you should go with either of them.
As far as I was concerned, after being in two minds for weeks. I decided to take a walk in 2-3 Apple retail stores and asked the salesperson to demonstrate both the machines. You also need to do the same before you buy. You will get a clearer picture and decision will become natural.
The user Experience is Way Superior.
While I like the MacBook Air for its Low cost, Slim and thin profile, still felt some of the things were missing. I wanted to have a powerful machine which I can use for next 4-5 years. I don’t intend to change it after 2-3 years, and the extra cost of MacBook Air was justified by, retina display, additional Ram, and Force touch trackpad.
The MacBook Pro is expensive and is not for everyone can afford it, had some real positives for spending the extra money. The retina display is just gorgeous, faster processor and 8 GB Ram ensures you can use it for the next 4-5 years easily. Force touchpad is also an added advantage.
Money is to be spent only once and if you have it no need to make compromises. That was the case for me. If you are looking for a lightweight notebook, not so expensive – MacBook Air is great to run all your daily tasks like email, internet surfing, Keynote presentations, etc.
But if you are willing to go the extra mile and want best of everything, there is only one choice – MacBook Pro 2015. Do Share your thoughts or queries in comments below if you are still undecided.
