Qualcomm has finally released the much hyped Snapdragon 820 mobile processor. Based on the white paper released by Qualcomm the new processor is faster by almost 100% compared to the Snapdragon 810 processor which is the current flagship.
It is interesting to see the new Qualcomm processor offers great performance upgrade Vs the current flagship Snapdragon 810. In past we have seen 30 to 50 % increase in performance when a new generation of processors were introduced.
The current generation of Flagships like the OnePlus 2, Sony Xperia Z5 , Nexus 6P uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.
If Qualcomm has managed to pull it off this time, then we can say it will boost the next generation of smartphones to a whole new level.
The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor is technically much advanced compared to the Snapdragon 810.
Technology Stack – The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 uses 64 bit Kryo Cores instead of the plain vanilla ARM Cortex Cores used in the Snapdragon 810. The processor is manufactured with 14nm FinFET LPP manufacturing process. Only Samsung has 14 nm processor manufacturing capability till now and the Exynos 7420 used in the Samsung S6 has been manufactured using the 14 nm manufacturing process.
How Fast – Snapdragon 820 is the world’s fastest mobile processor and will offer better performance compared to the Exynos 7420 (Samsung S6). We can expect the new processor to touch 100,000 Antutu score.
The Snapdragon 820 is a Quad -Core processor with Kryo Cores clocked at 2.2 Ghz. It also utilises the DSP 680 for always power on low power processing.
Gaming Performance – The Snapdragon 820 is accompanied by Adreno 530 GPU which offers unto 40% improvement of graphics processing compared to the Adreno 430 used in the previous flagship Snapdragon 810 processor.
It can be one of the most wanted features for gamers looking for realistic , console level performance in the mobile gaming domain.
X 12 LTE Support – This is the big improvement over the previous generation of processors, the new SD 820 will come with support for X12 LTE which theoretically supports unto 600 MB/Sec of data transfer up from 300 MB/s speeds.
Quick Charge 3.0 – The Processor brings improvement to the energy efficiency of the mobile and also bring the new Quick Charge 3.0 technology. The QC 3.0 offers 0 to 80% charging in flat 35 minutes. The SD 820 also consumes lesser energy compared to the SD 810 by almost 30%.
We can see good improvement in the battery life with 30% energy saving offered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor.
Improved Camera Performance – The 14 Bit Qualcomm Spectra Camera Image Signal Processor (ISP), offers faster response time from the camera and supports unto 28 Mega Pixel Lens. Your selfies and photographs are going to get a fresh boost with the Qualcomm processor.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 was a good processor but was plagued with the heating issues, we hope that Qualcomm has been able to curb those issues in the Snapdragon 820 which will raise the bar for smartphones in the coming months.
We are likely to see the Snapdragon 820 processor in the upcoming Xiaomi Mi5 , HTC’s next flagship and Sony Z6 when they arrive in 2016.
