Sony has unveiled the latest Z series smartphone, the successor to the Sony Z3. The Sony Xperia Z4 was quietly listed yesterday on the Sony’s Japanese portal. While in contrast HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6 were launched at packed events at MWC with bells and whistles.
The Japanese have decided to unveil the Sony Z4 in Japan only and on their official portal quietly.
There is yet no word about any launch event which a real flagship deserves from one of the largest companies in the world. Sony may do it later.

Considering the specs, it is a good smartphone, with one of the fastest processor, same as the HTC M9. Moreover, it has 3 GB RAM and the latest Android Lollipop 5.0. Excellent Camera’s if we believe what Sony guys are saying, that it is much better than the Camera we saw on the Z3.
Also, there are no details available about the India price or availability of the device at the moment.
The battery life is not going to be an issue with the stamina mode and 1080P display it will last much longer than the Samsung S6’s, 2650 mAH battery. Though Samsung S6 has a 14 NM advanced processor, it still has to manage the 2K display.Sony decided to equip the Xperia Z4 with 1080P display rather than moving up to 2560*1440 resolution.
The design is absolutely same compared to the Sony Xperia Z3. Are the above two images same, or I am little drunk. I guess I am not, they look the same with metal and glass design. The Z4 is a replica of the last years Z3 with 0.4 mm less thickness which could be due to the reduction of battery size by 170 mAH.
Samsung S6 or Apple iPhone 6 or Google Nexus 6 are all different from their earlier generations respectively. Are you also getting the same feeling that I am, Sony has bumped up the specs and kept design and most of the other elements same?
Yes, you are right if you are thinking so, global media is crucifying Sony for not adding a QHD 2K screen, keeping design same, 32 GB storage and not much new on features side.
In my opinion, Sony has upgraded the specs, included the flagship Snapdragon 810, kept the design same as was the case with the HTC M9 and HTC M8. I would say the new Sony Z4 is an excellent smartphone, not as bad as media is painting it. We expect so much from Sony, and lack of design changes and lack of any revolutionary upgrades makes this Z4 a dull flagship launch.
On the other hand, Sony is also struggling to manage the massive loss-making mobile division; smartphones is one of the most significant loss contributors to Sony’s Profit and Loss statement.
Sony CEO Kaz Hirai — a former boss of the PlayStation division, announced some time back that they may do away with the mobile and some other loss-making divisions like they liquidated the PC division(VAIO Brand).
With deep troubles in the smartphone division, I have little hopes that the new Z4 will be able to turn the tables on Sony. Sony has been an aspirational company for me for last two decades. The PlayStation was as revolutionary as an Apple iPhone or iMac. The true innovative product that Sony made, and it continues to do best to date. Xbox will be popular in North America and will continue to do so.For rest of the world, PS4 is the ultimate gaming console. Even Kaz Hirai said they would continue to focus and build on PlayStation.
Financial Snapshot of Sony
Sony had one of the best music players; the Walkman from Sony was incredible, they lost out to Apple when iPod became popular. They were big in home entertainment (TV and Music System) and are still big, but not as dominant as they were a few years back.
I cannot say for sure that whether Sony will look to close the mobile division in future, or restructure it, and make it an independent company. This is something time will tell, but one thing I am sure is, Sony needs to be more innovative & more aggressive if they want to rule the fiercely competitive smartphone domain.
I hope the Z4 was a true flagship and competed with the Samsung S6, all Sony fans like me, would like to see more flagship’s from Sony. Share your thoughts in comments below.
