Design and Display

The new Moto G7 looks the same as many phones from Oppo and Vivo that comes with a water-drop notch design.

The phone has got an elegant 6.2-inch FHD+ Display (2270×1080) with a 19:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

The LTPS LCD display panel is sufficiently bright for use in outdoor conditions. The mobile comes with a 3D curved back glass cover in either black or white color options.

There is a Motorola Logo at the chin of the device, which seems like an odd placement. It would have been better to keep the front clear for a more minimalist look.

Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 Octa-Core Processor and the Adreno 506 GPU.

Snapdragon 632 is really inferior in performance in comparison to the SD 636 used in most mobiles in the 10-15k price range currently.

On the positive side, the mobile runs on the Android 9 Pie out of the box and will get the Android Q update as well.

There is 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable using a dedicated micro-sd card slot upto 128 GB.

Further, it has got 3000 mAH battery (seems low) and a 15 Watts Turbo Charger for rapid charging.

The rear cameras look impressive and come with 12 MP ( f1.8, 1.25um pixel), 5 MP depth sensor and have PDAF.

The camera can capture 4K videos at 30 FPS and 1080P videos at 60 FPS. Additionally, there is support for slow-motion, EIS, Hyperlapse, timelapse and Cinemagraph.

For selfies, there is an 8 MP shooter which comes with 1.12um pixel size and even has screen flash.

Undoubtedly, the camera is the highlighting feature for the new Moto G7 and offers plenty of features such as portrait mode, better low light shots, high-resolution zoom, AI-based smile detection, and in-built Google lens.

Other Features

Motorola is using USB type C port but still has retained the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Further, the mobile comes with a water repellent design with P2i nano-coating, making it splash proof.

It weighs 172 grams (a bit heavy) and has 8 mm thickness.

Moto G7 Plus

Moto G7 Plus is very similar to the Moto G7 physically and comes with the same design, weight, and battery back up.

Upcoming Moto-G7-Plus

The G7 Plus comes with a better camera setup and has a 16 MP shooter at the back with F/1.7 aperture and OIS support. The secondary camera has a 5 Megapixel resolution and comes with an f/2.2 aperture.

For Selfies, there is an improved 12 Megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture lens.

What’s more, the G7 Plus uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Octa-Core processor and the Adreno 509 GPU.

The SD 636 is way superior to the SD 632 used in the G7.

Rest of the specifications and features for G7 Plus are the same as the Moto G7.

Moving ahead to the battery monster.

Moto G7 Power

The G7 Power comes with all-day battery life, or you can even squeeze more out of it.

There is a massive 5000 mAH capacity battery that comes with 15 Watts turbo Charger.

The phone runs on Android Pie and has the SD 632 Octa-Core SOC. There is 3 GB of ram (seems low) and 32 GB of internal storage.

The display and camera is a downgrade in comparison to the Moto G7. It uses a 6.2 Inch HD+ Display with a lower resolution of (1570×720). However, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

There is a single rear camera at the back. It comes with a 12 Megapixel lens and has f/2.0 aperture, 1.25 Micron pixel size.

For taking selfies, there is an 8 Megapixel f/2.2 aperture lens.

Aforementioned, Motorola has launched the Moto G7 Power in India for a price tag of Rs. 13,999. The phone will initially be available in select retail stores across the country and later on, will go on sale online.

The price for Moto G7 Power seems higher considering the competition. In fact, it competes with the Motorola One Power that comes with overall better specs and cameras.

Moto G7 Play

The G7 play is the watered-down version of the G7 and comes with few compromises.

Firstly, the G7 Play has a smaller 5.7 Inch Display with (1512×720) HD+ resolution.

Upcoming Moto-G7

Secondly, the device has got just 2 GB of ram which is a shame considering even potato phones from Chinese vendors have 3 GB of ram in a similar price range.

However, it runs on the same SD 632 as G7. The battery capacity is 3000 mAH, and it runs on Android Pie out of the box.

The phone has got 10 Watts of rapid charging and even ships with a USB type C port.

Unlike the other devices in the G7 series with glass back cover, the G7 play comes with a humbler plastic back casing.

Furthermore, the G7 Play comes with a single 13 Megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture.

For selfies, there is an 8 Megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture.

Price Details Moto G7 Series

  • Moto G7 – $299 (Rs. 21,000)
  • Moto G7 Plus – $340 (Rs. 24,000)
  • The Moto G7 Power – $249 (Rs. 17,500)
  • Moto G7 Play – $199 (Rs. 14000)

Initial Thoughts – Moto G7 Series

The positive aspect of the G7 series is Android Pie with the stock user experience. The water-resistant coating and slightly better audio with Dolby support. The design is good and modern.

On the negative side, processors and performance are not going to match rivals in the same price range.

An SD 632 is weak they should have used a 636 instead and for G7 Plus an SD 675 or at least a 660.

Motorola is calling the phones as “All day battery Mobiles.” Oh, Come on, they have 3000 mAH battery (way lower than rivals). They should have used at least a 3500 mAH battery or even a higher capacity.

Lastly, the price is going to be a disaster in India as in the past. Chinese manufacturers are selling at 50% discount than Motorola.

It is a good thing they have not launched these in the hyper-competitive Indian market.

Poor Processors, low battery capacity, and exorbitant prices are the right mix for a disaster in the Indian market.

Dear Motorola or Lenovo (whatever, I should call you) you have no idea what the customers really want.
