Xiaomi has launched the Mi 4i on 23 April 2015, at a launch event in Delhi. The Xiaomi Ceo Lei Jun and VP Hugo Bara were present at the function in New Delhi to unveil the new Xiaomi smartphone.
This was the global launch of Mi 4i, and it was the first smartphone to be unveiled in India first. Usually, Xiaomi holds such conferences in China. This indeed shows how important is the Indian market for the Chinese conglomerate. Xiaomi has been one of the fastest growing companies in the world and was founded as recently as April 6, 2010.
The Mi 4i has filled the gap between the more expansive Mi4 and the Redmi Note 4G. The Mi 4i is priced at Rs. 12,999 in the Indian market and like most Xiaomi smartphones offer excellent value for money for the buyers.
The smartphone will be available on Snapdeal, Amazon, and Flipkart starting from 30-April-2015 at 2:00 PM. It will also be available from the Mobile Store, Airtel Store, and the official Xiaomi India website.
You will notice the design is smooth and it is one of those less bulky smartphones which you will love to hold in your hand. The thickness is 8.9 mm, and the smartphone feels easy to use.
The Mi 4i comes in different colors like yellow, black & white and green.
The green and yellow are more glossy and looks more like vibrant colored Lumia Smartphones. The white and black variant (actually looks dark grey) is less shiny.
The volume button and power button in on the left side and at the back we have a Dual-tone led flash along with the camera.
Weight – 130 grams, the smartphone is lite in weight
Screen Size & Resolution
I love smartphones with 5.0-inch screen somehow they feel right in the hand. The Mi 4i also has the 5-inch screen with class-leading 1920*1080P resolution.
Xiaomi has a special feature which adjusts the brightness to maximum when you use the smartphone in broad daylight(outdoors).
The display is visible even in very bright conditions. The pixel density is 441 and viewing angle of the screen is also pretty good. The bezels are thin, and you can easily work with the smartphone with one hand.
Processing Power and Gaming
Xiaomi has powered the new Mi 4i with Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 which is an Octa-core 64 Bit processor. The smartphone has 2 GB RAM which is adequate for multitasking.
The processor has big.LITTLE architecture where 4 Power cores are clocked at 1.7 GHz for intensive load and 4 cores are clocked at 1.1 GHz; this ensures that your processor uses way less battery.
It is the same processor you find on the Micromax’s Yu Yureka. But I think Xiaomi would have optimized it much better to run with the software.
The GPU is Adreno 405 which great for playing all modern games like Asphalt 8 and Need for Speed most wanted.
Xiaomi has astounded me by integrating a 3120 mAh capacity battery in this rather thin and less bulky smartphone. You can easily be able to use the smartphone all day without the need to recharge this.
Rear Camera – Xiaomi has used f/2.0 aperture 13 MP camera on the Mi 4i, the initial expression of the image quality of the camera looks better compared to the Asus Zenphone 2 which may need some more software updates to get the color reproduction and image noise in control.
The 13 MP camera of Xiaomi can take good daylight images and moderately good night-time snaps.
Front Camera – The front camera is a 5 MP wide-angle camera, which is good for video chat as well as clicking group selfies.
Storage – The internal storage is 16 GB, which cannot be expanded using a micro-SD card. For users who like to store tons of images, videos and data on their smartphones this can be a deal breaker.
But I think for regular users a 16 GB storage is more than enough. You can use the OTG cable along with the Xiaomi Mi 4i to transfer all the excess data to your PC or Laptop easily.
Xiaomi has trumped the Operating System game with the new Mi 4i and has included the Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system. You get the Android Lollipop, out of the box, no need to install or update.
The smartphone has the MIUI 6 mod along with the Android Lollipop operating system which makes it look even more gorgeous.
MIUI UI 6 makes your smartphone theme, icons, apps and settings screen, lock screen and whole user interface different from the pure Android experience which you experience on Nexus devices or even Motorola.
Connectivity – This is another Ace up Xiaomi’s sleeve, they have given Dual Sim 4G support with the MI 4i. What this means, you can use both your sims as 4G.
This feature of both 4G sims came with the Huawei Honor 4X. While with most smartphones you can use one sim with high-speed data(4G/3G) and other on 2G. Mi 4i makes you surf data on blazing fast speed using any of the sims.
The Xiaomi Mi 4i also has 2G/3G/WIFI support along with Bluetooth 4.1.
Verdict Xiaomi Mi 4i
The smartphone has an excellent processor, latest OS, superb screen with a 1080p display. The battery life is remarkable; the camera is decent, is thin and has a unique design.
Build quality could have been a little better; I like the Samsung A5 and A7 for the build quality. Of course, they are expensive but look premium.
The real low point could be the non-expandable 16 GB storage out of which you have 10.7 GB available to use. Also, considering the aggressive price of Rs. 12,999, it is a good smartphone under Rs. 15,000.
