Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Hands On and Preview: Bigger is Better
Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Hands On and Preview: Bigger is Better – At an event 18th July 2017, Xiaomi launched its latest phablet in India- the Mi Max 2. The smartphone comes as a successor to last year’s Xiaomi Mi Max and costs Rs. 16,999.
The Mi Max 2 has a lot of similarities with the Mi Max such as screen size and bigger battery. But there are subtle upgrades compared to the last iteration we will find out in this Hands On first impression of the device.
But the internals of the phone is similar to Redmi Note 4, but comes with a much better camera. The Mi Max 2 will be available for sale in India starting today in Mi.com. Xiaomi is also conducting a third anniversary sale exclusively on Mi.com, where the brand is offering discounts on several smartphones, and the Mi Max 2 will be up for sale for the first time in India.
We spend a little time with the Mi Max 2, and the device looked incredible in a short time because it has competitive hardware and for the price is a superb deal.
Here’s how the device fared in our short time with the phone.
Let’s Talk Design – Mi Max 2
The highlight of the Mi Max 2 is its design. Yes, at 7.6 mm in thickness, the Max 2 feels very robust in hands, and even the 211 grammes weight doesn’t make any difference because the device is well built and has everything on point.
The phone has an iPhone-esque antenna band design, but they are not visible, unless you closely observe, thanks to the matte black colour edition launched in India.
The discreet Antenna Design for the Mi Max 2 it blends into the body and is hardly visible.
Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Display and Experience
With a screen size of 6.44-inches, the Mi Max 2 is surely not a single handed device. But Xiaomi is making the device usage easier by adding a one-handed mode into the MIUI. The panel used in the Mi Max 2 is a Full HD one with a resolution of 1080*1920 pixels.
The big display offers a much better reading experience compared to smaller phones I have used. We all secretly want a larger display on a phone to read our favorite publications, but obviously it some times become annoying while calling or carrying in a pocket.
Screen Protection and Display Quality – Xiaomi, for the first time, mentioned a screen protection used on their smartphone and it’s the dated Gorilla Glass 3 technology. The display is very good and offers punchy colours. The Mi Max 2 will be a beast for multimedia watchers in a smartphone.
Split Screen Mode – There is also support for Split screen which is a handy feature when it comes to multi-tasking with the Mi Max 2.
Performance and Batttery Life
Hardware wise, the Mi Max 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 625 chip with an octa-core 2.0 GHz CPU. The phone has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The device also has a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
Though the Snapdragon 625 is not as powerful as the last years Snapdragon 652 on the original Mi Max. But due to the 14nm manufacturing process the Snapdragon 625 offers much better energy efficiency.
The Snapdragon 625 is known for its energy efficiency capabilities, and with a mammoth 5300mAh battery, the device will be a battery beast. This chipset is paired with an Adreno 506 GPU for graphic intensive tasks.
Coming to the major aspect of the Mi Max 2, it uses a 5300mAh battery which comes with Quick Charge 3.0 support and Parallel Charge technology. The device will easily last for two days even with heavy usage. We will bring the full battery performance in our complete review of the product.
Xiaomi showcased the below battery test and the Mi Max 2 lasts much longer when compared to the iPhone 7 Plus and the Mi Max which are one of the best battery mobiles.
Camera – A Much Better Camera than Redmi Note 4
Xiaomi has used a Sony IMX386 12MP sensor on the Mi Max 2. The company also highlighted that it’s the same sensor used in the Xiaomi Mi 6. The sensor has a f/2.2 aperture, so the low-light photos will surely disappoint you. The front-facing camera is a 5MP one, which also doesn’t inspire confidence.
Xiaomi Mi Max 2 comes with Dual speakers and offers decent sound quality. The sound from the speakers is loud and goes with the large display when watching movies or playing games. The smartphone automatically switches to stereo mode when it is in landscape mode for a better listening experience.
Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Hands On and Preview: Bigger is Better
Concluding the article, the Mi Max 2 is an excellent successor for a smartphone like Mi Max because Xiaomi sold over three million units of the Mi Max in just one year. Also, the phone has support for 4G VoLTE and all other basic connectivity options.
As seen with Xiaomi all these years, the device is priced affordably and will sell in a good number. The decision to launch only a matte black version is surely appreciated as many customers who’re looking to purchase a matte black version of Redmi Note 4 is going for other colour due to limited stocks.
We will bring the complete review of the product in coming weeks.
