Mi Max 2 Improves on the Mi Max Shortcomings
There are many upgrades compared to the older Xiaomi Mi Max before we talk about the low point of missing on the Snapdragon 660. Let’s look at the Key upgrades compared to the last Xiaomi Mi Max that the new smartphone promises.
Specs, Price Features and launch Details Xiaomi Mi Max 2
Design – The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 promises a more refined design and looks, the antenna bands are like the Apple iPhone 6s, aligned to the top and bottom edges. The edges seem to be more rounded than before, and it feels this will be slightly easy to grab.
Display – The screen Size is 6.44 Inches and comes with Full HD Display (1920*1080) pixels with 342 Ppi to be precise. The display is bright with 450 nits maximum brightness, and there is 2.5D curved glass on top of the display panel to make it more pleasing to touch.
Battery Life – The phablet comes with more battery 5300 mAH capacity compared to the 4850 mAH on the Mi Max. It has almost 10% more battery capacity, and with the SD 625, we can expect it last much more compared the previous phone.
Mi Max 2 solves the holy grail of battery life and can be one of the longest battery life smartphones you can buy in the market. I meant China market from June 1. Additionally, the smartphone comes with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 with fast charging support. The Mi Max 2 promises to Charge 68% in just 1 hour. There is also reversible charging support which can help you charge another smartphone using a reverse charging cable.
Storage and Variants – The smartphone will be available in 2 variants – 4 GB RAM and 64 GB Storage, 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. We were secretly hoping for a 6 GB RAM version of Mi Max 2.
Price – The smaller storage version costs CNY 1699 or $240 (Rs. 16500) while, the larger variant of the Mi Max 2 costs CNY 1999 ($ 280 or Rs 19500).
Software – The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 have the latest OS to entice some of the Nougat fans; the smartphone comes with MIUI 8.0 along with the Android Nougat 7.0. There is also the split screen feature which can help you do two tasks at the same time. A much-needed feature for this mammoth smartphone.
Camera – The Mi Max 2 camera is a significant upgrade from the average camera of Xiaomi Mi Max. The rear camera comes with 12 MP sensor with Dual-Tone LED Flash, and it has PDAF, f/2.2 aperture, Sony IMX386 sensor along with a larger 1.25μm pixel size. It is similar to the Mi6 camera without the telephoto lens.
At the front, there is a 5 Megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture and 85-degree wide angle lens.
Sound – Xiaomi has upgraded the sound on the Mi Max 2, making the best use of internal space. It now comes with stereo speakers to ensure richer sound output and playing movies and videos is going to be great on the large display with the incredible sound output.
Unlike the Xiaomi Mi 6, the Mi Max 2 still ships with the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Fingerprint Sensor – The smartphone comes with a fingerprint sensor at the back, just like the older iteration and there is also an IR blaster.
Dimensions – The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 comes with 212 grams of weight and has 7.6 mm of thickness.
Connectivity – The Dual Sim Smartphone comes with 4G LTE as well as VOLTE connectivity. There is modern USB Type-C port for charging and connectivity to other devices. It is not clear if it has the NFC support.
Mi Max 2 Processor – Is it a Let-Down? – The most anticipated upgrade was the processor, as many rumors indicated that the smartphone could use the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Octa-Core processor, but it is not the case. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 came with the tested and tried Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.
“Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Is Magnanimous But Misses On Snapdragon 660”
A similar thing happened when Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, the processor felt like a downgrade from the Snapdragon 650 on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.
Notably, the Xiaomi Mi Max was powered by the Snapdragon 652 processor which is significantly faster when compared to the Snapdragon 625 Octa-Core processor used in the Xiaomi Mi Max 2.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 comes with 2.0 GHz clock speed and is manufactured from the latest 14 Nm Process. It is highly energy efficient and compliments the large battery Mi Max 2. There is Adreno 506 GPU which is sufficient to play all the graphics-intensive games on the Full HD Display.
No matter how convincing it may sound we would have loved to have the Snapdragon 660 Octa-Core processor in this beast.
India Launch – The Mi Max 2 is available so far in China and will most likely get launched in July in India, considering the Mi Max was also launched at the same time (30 June 2016) last year and is due for an upgrade.
Overall I think it is a great phone from Xiaomi and considering the price competitiveness of the brand; it will do great in the market.
