Xiaomi has unveiled a smartphone in China with an outlandish display – the Mi Mix Alpha 5G concept.
This new Xiaomi phone is all about display.
The original Mi Mix, when launched, looked futuristic, so does this new Mi Mix Alpha.
Unlike Samsung or Huawei, who are banking on the foldable displays; Xiaomi has made a phone that comes with a surround display.
It is difficult to comprehend when reading about it, so I am sharing the video below to understand the design.
So, Xiaomi has made a phone that has a full display on the front side with curved edges and it wraps around the body and the backside as well.
At the back, there is a vertical camera module. The display wraps around the whole body of the mobile barring the strip which houses cameras.
As per Xiaomi” “To accommodate the nearly all-screen offering, Mi MIX Alpha has minimal bezels on the top and bottom, and ditches the physical side buttons altogether.”
Xiaomi claims that the device has a 180% screen to body ratio and considering the display is both sides, it is true.
So there are no side buttons and very little bezels at the top and bottom.
There are special sensors that can detect which side of the phone you are looking at to lighten up the display.
Further, Xiaomi is using a new display acoustic technology that allows them to remove the conventional earpiece.
Also, the edges on this mobile are pressure-sensitive to use them for different functions which otherwise are done using physical hardware buttons.
The phone body uses materials like titanium alloy and ceramics.
The display has a 7.92-inch size and comes with 2088×2250 pixels resolution.
If you are not blown away with the design, it comes with an unprecedented 108 Megapixel Camera, the highest megapixel camera on any phone.
The phone has a triple rear camera module which you can also use to take selfies.
Aforementioned, the primary camera has a 108 MP Samsung HMX sensor, secondary camera has a 20 MP wide-angle lens. Lastly, we have a 12 MP Telephoto camera.
Excited to share our groundbreaking #MiMIXAlpha, future of smartphones!

The Mi Mix Alpha runs on the custom MIUI 10 which comes with relevant changes to work with this unconventional display.
Powering the phone is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ Octa-Core processor and there is massive 12 GB Ram.
The battery is 4050 mAH, not very large, considering the humongous display.
However, there is a 40 Watts fast charger to charge it rapidly.
Lastly, as the name suggests the phone comes with 5G support.
Price and Availability
Xiaomi is not planning to mass-produce the Mi Mix Alpha but will start shipping it from December 2019.
The price is steep, CNY 19,999 or Rs. 200,000. You can buy two latest iPhone 11 Pro for that price.
Since this a concept phone, it is unlikely that Xiaomi will launch it globally.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G Vs Mi Mix 3 Vs Mi Mix 2 Vs Mi Mix – Evolution of Bezel-less Phones
Mi Mix 3 5G Showcase at MWC 2019 in Barcelona
Back on 26th October 2018, Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 3 and also announced the Mi Mix 3 (5G) variant in China.
Now they have showcased the 5G version of the device at the MWC 2019. It comes with some upgrades in comparison to the Mi Mix 3.
Mi Mix 3 (5G) Vs the Mi Mix 3 (Upgrades)
The Mi Mix 3 came with Snapdragon 845 processor whereas the new Mi Mix 3 5G comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Processor and Adreno 640 GPU.
Also, to enable 5G network the phone comes with the new Snapdragon X50 5G modem. Also, Xiaomi has increased the battery capacity from 3200 mAH (Mi Mix 3) to 3800 on the Mi Mix 3 (5G) variant.
Other Specs and design, such as cameras, and OS remain the same as the standard Mi Mix 3.
Xiaomi has not made any changes to the other features but added the 5G capability and the faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SOC.
The smartphone will go on sale in the UK first for Euro 599 or Rs. 48,900. This is the second phone from Xiaomi that comes with the SD 855 SOC, the first was Xiaomi Mi9.

Update 26/October/2018 – Yesterday at an event in China, Xiaomi launched the successor to the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, a new Mi Mix 3.
Highlight Features Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
Back in November 2016, Xiaomi shook the world with the launch of revolutionary Mi Mix. The first ever, truly bezel-free phone, which started the race among manufacturers to make mobiles without bezels.
The one major flaw in the Mi Mix or Mix 2 was the front camera placement at the bottom chin. Making it difficult to capture selfies or you needed to turn it upside down to click pictures with the right framing.
Lesser Bezels and Sliding Cameras
The new Mi Mix 3 overcomes that issue by using a mechanical (magnetic) slider to pop-up the front cameras. It has less bezels and comes with a 93.4% ultra-high screen to body ratio.
Xiaomi says that the new manual sliding mechanism is highly durable, and it can easily work for more than 300,000 times. The manual sliding mechanism is not new for smartphones, several phones in the past have used it for sliding keyboards.
But the implementation is new in the Mi Mix 3, and it is done the first time for the front cameras. Oppo Find X uses a similar slider but is an electronic automatic mechanism.
The new sliding camera mechanism looks cool, robust and serves the purpose. It can become popular soon with other Android manufacturers copying the design.
Huawei is also launching a phone called Honor Magic 2 which uses a similar mechanical slider. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun claims they are the first to use the sliding mechanism while Huawei is also claiming that the original idea was there’s.
5G Network Support and 10 GB Ram ( First in the World)
The second key highlight of the new Mi Mix 3 is that it is the first phone in the world that comes with support for 5G network, and also is the first mobile to have upto 10 GB of ram.
Most other phones come with a maximum of 8 GB ram.
Notably, the 5G version of the Mi Mix 3 is not available until early next year, and the current models will have only 4G support.
Design and Display
The Mi Mix 3 is going to be available in three color options – black, green and blue. This time we are missing the white version which was available in the previous 2 iterations.
The phone is made from Ceramic material which is a signature to the Mix series. However, the robustness of the Ceramic is questionable in comparison to the Corning Gorilla Glass 5/6.
The phone is not very thick despite the sliding mechanism. It has 8.5 mm thickness and weighs 218 grams (a bit heavy, due to the ceramic build).
The phone comes with a 6.4 Inch Super AMOLED Display with 1080 x 2340 pixels and 19.5:9 ratio with an insane 93.4% screen to body ratio.
Performance, Battery and OS
As most other flagship devices the new Mi Mix 3 comes with the obvious Snapdragon 845 Processor and Adreno 630 GPU.
The phone has a 3200 mAH capacity battery that is smaller than 3400 mAH (Mi Mix 2) and 4400 mAH (Mi Mix). However, the Mix 3 comes with the wireless fast charging support and even has support for Quick Charge when using a normal charger.
The mobile runs on the latest Android 9.0 Pie along with the MIUI 10 to ensure users get the best experience on the full-screen display.
The Mi Mix 3 has Dual Front and Dual Rear cameras, four in total. The front side has a 24-megapixel selfie camera that comes with f/2.0 aperture, and there is even a 2 MP secondary camera that is used for depth sensing to take portrait selfies with the bokeh effect.
The rear cameras are superb and come with two lenses with 12 Megapixel resolution. One of the lenses has an f1/.8 aperture and the second telephoto lens has a f/2.4 aperture.
The primary lens supports Optical image stabilization which helps the Mi Mix 3 to take better low-light images as well as less shaky videos.
DXOMark has given an excellent score to the Mi Mix 3. The photo score of 108 and Video score of 93, and an aggregate score of 103 makes it better than the OnePlus 6, Mi 8 and the Asus Zenfone 5Z.
Price and Availability
The Mi Mix 3 will go on sale starting 1st November 2018 in China and it is not clear when the brand will launch it in India or elsewhere.
- 6 GB Ram and 128 GB Storage – Price – 3299 Yuan or Rs. 34,500
- 8 GB Ram and 128 GB Storage – Price – 3999 Yuan or Rs. 42,500
- Special Edition “Forbidden City Palace Museum” – 10 GB Ram and 256 GB Storage – Price – 499 Yuan or Rs. 52,500.
Aforementioned, the above phones come with 4G connectivity and the 5G variant price is yet not shared by the company.
Some Cons for the Mi Mix 3
- The phone has a Ceramic build which is less durable.
- It is bulky and weighs 212 grams.
- 3200 mAH capacity battery is not going to be sufficient for heavy users.
- It lacks the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
- There is no in-display fingerprint scanner.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Launch, Specs, Top Features – What’s New
Xiaomi has unveiled the second generation of Mi Mix smartphone today at an event in China. The event was live streamed globally and was packed with tech enthusiasts and Mi Fans.
Xiaomi has also launched the Xiaomi Mi Note 3 smartphone in China.
The new Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 comes with a similar design to the last years Mi Mix. There are some improvements to the design and it also comes in a special Ceramic Edition.
The smartphone comes in the regular metallic build made from high-class aluminum and ceramic body and there is also the more premium and expensive pure Ceramic Edition of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.
This year’s Mi Mix 2 is slightly smaller when compared to the last year model. The Mi Mix 2 has a 5.99 Inch Display compared to a 6.44 Inch display on the Mi Mix.
The new Mi Mix 2 comes with 18:9 aspect ratio and has 12% reduced Chin Size when compared to the Mi Mix.
The smartphone comes with four-sided curved ceramic or metallic body and looks much less boxy when compared to the last year model. It looks more like a finished product now compared to a concept look on the MI MIX.
The Mi Mix 2 has an FHD+ Display (2160*1080) pixels which is not too high considering the display on the Samsung Note 8 and LG V30 have a higher resolution and pixel density.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix comes in following configurations and variants:
- Mi Mix 2 Special Ceramic Edition – 8 GB RAM and 128GB storage – Price Rs. 46,500 (RMB 4699)
- Mi Mix 2 – 6 GB RAM and 256 GB storage – Price Rs. 39500 (RMB 3999)
- Mi Mix 2 – 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage – Price Rs. 35500 (RMB 3599)
- Mi Mix 2 – 6 GB RAM and 64 GB storage – Price Rs. 32500 (RMB 3299)
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Octa-Core processor clocked at 2.35 GHz and comes with the Adreno 540 GPU. The smartphone has got 6 GB of ram for the normal version which has a metallic build while the more expensive Ceramic version comes with 8 GB of Ram.
The smartphone has got a single rear camera which comes with the 12 Megapixel (Sony IMX386) sensor with 1.25-micron pixel size. It is the same camera sensor which is used in the primary camera for the Mi 6.
The camera comes with 4 Axis Optical image stabilization which is great to improve the video and image quality. The front camera is basic with just a 5-megapixel sensor.
Xiaomi probably has not used a bigger selfie camera to accommodate it in the small space available at the lower side. Notably, the front camera on the Mi Mix 2 is also on the lower side as there is no space at the top.
It does come with the magical ‘hidden sound-guided speaker’, the company calls it to be a ‘cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology’.
The Mi Mix 2 don’t have an earpiece at the top but it resonates the sound through the metal frame and delivers it through the screen itself, sounds magical and futuristic (though was also used in the MI MIX).
Xiaomi also shared some of the finer details about the new Mi Mix 2 as it has a gold plated ring around the rear camera and the smartphone also supports all the global LTE bands. So you need not worry where you buy it and in which country you plan to use it.
Xiaomi says the Mi Mix 2 is a global product. The Mi Mix 2 is 11.5% lighter in weight compared to the Mi Mix and it is also about 7% smaller compared to the Apple iPhone 7 Plus which comes with a 5.5 Inch Screen size.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 comes with a 3400 mAH capacity battery which is 1000 mAH less than the battery used in the original Mi Mix. The Battery on the Mi Mix 2 sports Quick Charge 3.0. The smartphone weighs 185 grams and has a thickness of 7.7 mm.
Another notable thing is that Mi Mix 2 misses on the traditional 3.5 mm headphone jack and comes with the USB Type C port.
The smartphone runs on the MIUI 9 along with the Android Nougat 7.1 operating system. The New Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 looks fantastic and the design is also a lot user-friendly with curved surfaces.
Though some of the things we thought Xiaomi could have added to Mi Mix 2 are Dual Rear Cameras, a higher resolution display. Now, this device is more practical and affordable and Xiaomi may have left those to keep the price low.
Xiaomi has also launched a new Mi Note 3 smartphone which is a larger version of the Mi6 and also unveiled a new MacBook Pro rival called as MiBook Pro.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 India Launch
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 India Launch Confirmed By Manu Kumar Jain – Xiaomi India head Mr. Manu Kumar Jain tweeted and shared that the new smartphone Mi Mix 2 will launch in India as well.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 was launched in China today and after couple hours of launch, the good news for the India launch was shared by Manu Kumar Jain on his twitter handle.
It is a very big news for the Xiaomi India fans as the smartphone will be the only flagship phone that Xiaomi has brought to India since the Xiaomi Mi 5 in early 2016.
Almost after 1.5 years, Xiaomi is planning to get a high-end smartphone in the Indian market and that is surely a big deal for many Xiaomi followers.
Xiaomi is now the second most popular brand in the Indian market and has sold more than 2.5 Crore smartphones since it’s inception in the country in 2014.
In just 3 years the brand has become number 2 and pushed out the Indian brands like Micromax, Lava, and Intex from the top 5 slots. The expansion of Xiaomi is a big concern for Samsung which is the market leader and have a 23.6% market share compared to 17% of Xiaomi.
While Xiaomi has been strong in the budget segment and midrange they have been missing action in the high-end flagship market. Now with the new Mi Mix 2, they are planning to capture the high-end market as well.
Xiaomi MI MIX 2
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is launched in the 4 variants in the Chinese market for the Mi Mix 2.
We can expect the starting price in India close to Rs. 33,000 for the Mi Mix 2 base variant with 64 GB storage while the 128 GB storage version can be priced close to Rs. 36,000 and the 256 GB version if launched in the country will be priced close to Rs. 40,000.
It is difficult to say if Xiaomi will also launch the Special edition made of ceramic in the Indian market which is priced at 4699 RMB or Rs. 46,500. The special edition comes with 8 GB of Ram.
It would be great if Xiaomi can also bring the Xiaomi Mi Note 3 in the Indian market which will strengthen the mid-range portfolio more in the 20k to 30k price range.
Specs Comparison Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Vs OnePlus 5 Vs Mi Mix
Xiaomi today launched the Mi Mix 2 and the smartphone is also poised to launch in the Indian market soon as per the tweet from Indian CEO Mr Manu Kumar Jain.
Here is a brief Specs comparison when compared to the older Mi Mix to see what has changed and also we have compared it to the crowd favorite OnePlus 5. The OnePlus 5 is priced at Rs. 32,999 and we are expecting the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 to launch in India at the same price as the OnePlus 5.
The smartphone will compete with the likes of LG G6 and the OnePlus or the Huawei Honor Pro in the Indian market when launched. Though no confirmed date is provided we can expect the smartphone to launch in October ahead of Diwali season.
It is almost 1.5 years since the launch of Xiaomi Mi5 in the country that Xiaomi has brought a new high-end smartphone to the market. Let’s Look at the quick Specs and design comparison of the 3 devices.
Xiaomi Mi Mix
The Xiaomi Mi Mix was the original true Bezel-less smartphone launched in November 2016 in China. The smartphone was designed by the French designer Philippe Starck and was only available for purchase in the Chinese market.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is launched on 11/September 2017 and the smartphone comes with an improved design. The edges are more curved now compared to a more boxy appearance of the original Mi Mix.
The smartphone has even thinner bezels and the chin comes with 12% less bezels compared to the MI Mix.
The rear camera is vastly improved for the smartphone as it now comes with a Sony IMX386 sensor with support for Optical image stabilization. The smartphone is also smaller and more practical to use now with 5.99 Inch display compared to a larger 6.44 Inch display on the original Mi Mix.
The OnePlus 5 is the flagship smartphone from OnePlus and was launched in India in June 2017 priced at Rs. 32,999 for the 6 GB version. It is also available in the 8 GB version for Rs. 37,999. The smartphone comes with a great Dual Rear camera with (16 MP+20 MP) lens and also has very good front selfie camera with 16 Mega-pixel lenses.
The other major differentiating factor is that it comes with a normal display with 16:9 aspect ration compared to an 18:9 aspect ratio on the MI Mix2.
The Mi Mix and the Mi Mix 2 comes with an Infinite display with very narrow front bezels like the Samsung S8 or the LG V30. The OnePlus 5 runs on the stock Android with a lightweight skin from Oneplus (Oxygen OS).
